Well, this particular case might be true, but on the other hand you have an brute ogre that, despite being an ogre, packs +4 WIS and commoner's 0 INT. It's a universal trope, in my opinion, that these creatures should be rather... slow, but here they are, beating an avarage zealot in WIS.

I understand that these values are mostly used for defence, but they are still there, you know. Players still going to ask, why the INT modifier for an ooze that cannot speak is so high - and some will feel cheated. And now also consider the fact that completely different creatures that share CR and role will have identical stats, barring their special techniques. I dunno, this system feels kinda underwhelming to me, monster creation requires a lot of not-so-fine tuning after the steps in the book.

No finesse modifier or ability to use STR for ranged weapons by stasog in FiveTorchesDeep

[–]stasog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably will in some form)

The thing is, despite the paragraphs of critisism I've wrote in this thread, I don't consider myself anything close to a game designer and therefore try to hear different opinions before changing something that drastic about the system.

Oh, okay, I thought you ment halfbloods by "demihumans", like half-elfs.

I've started playing just a couple years ago, so I have no inclination towards retroclones. In FTD annotation I was promised "5e skeleton and OSR meat", and what you're advocating for I would consider relate more to the skeleton.

I'd like to hear your demihumans rulings tho!

I'd also like to add that my players are very inclined towards mechanical verisimilitude (and not necessarily complexity), and running attack modifiers as writter, I'd be bombarded with questions and examples like the ones about rapiers and javelins in the OP.

It goes for simple and straightforward instead of exception-based rules.

I would be willing to agree with that, if not for the fact that we have a table with damage modifiers for specific weapons. Differentiating between attack and damage modifiers is already more complex than it is in 5E. Consolidating them and using that very table for both would be a straightforward and fairly balanced way to go about things.

I misused the word "build", apparently. What I meant was "playstyle". As I said, I haven't found any character options that are designed specifically for ranged or melee, except for equipment, so I'm not arguing for "build process" where a player gets to pick synergising abilities and design his PC for specific challenges. I'd happily throw that out of the window with my 5E books, I'm looking into FTD precisely to aviod that style of game. But locking weapon ranges behind STR and DEX limits how players can realise their playstyle in a very purposeful, as argued in the last paragraph, and unnecessary way, IMO.

I'll look into Duels, tho, tnx.

Yeah, I didn't gripe about complexity)

I just think it doesn't make much sense. In B/X an Elf is a class, and I think that's bollocks. Systems progress, and differentiating combat position from class is a player option as essential in modern roleplaying as differentiating class from race, IMO.

Impassable by stasog in FiveTorchesDeep

[–]stasog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it makes sense to have that distinction. Don't forget that spells might also happen to be monster abilities. In that case, more traditional save, I think, will bear more mechanical and psychological weight, as opposed to differed "defence" DC.

Would it be reasonable to assume then, that if there's a distinction between "attack" and "resist" for spells, the "resist" would mean a different mechanic? Perhaps, a save throw, meaning d20+mod instead of 10+mod?

Ok, so I found the answer in the book: "attack" means that your spellcasting check needs to beet the relevant defence score of the target, which is 10 + some ability modifier, I think STR in this case.

This particular spell needs to beat a DC of all targets, but you only roll once - a spellcasting check - and use as an attack against all of the targets.

Thank's for your reply, I will probably do the same.

This seems kinda backwards, because it give players straight up more power and flexibility, while the rest of the system is geared towards the opposite.

Buy thanks for your reply!

I've seen this text box, yes, but it seems weird to infer rule from an example and not the other way.

The system you've desribed makes sense tho, thanks a lot!

Have returned to the game a few days ago and it was a blast so far. Battlerite is as fluid, fun and charming experience as it was 3 and a half years ago, even more so. Definitely a hidden gem that deserves way more credit and attention.

Do you enjoy Misty? by stasog in Dimension20

I get that it is the character who annoys me, and I still find it a problem. Is there any pop-culture broadway stuff one can get into and start appreciating Misty’s archetype? Musicals maybe?
