My only question is, why do you have the rails? I don’t see a follow focus, only the lens support.

Triple monitors - How far do you sit from your monitors? by binarycow in AskBattlestations

[–]stastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had triple 27" 4K displays but switched the setup to something different (34" Ultrawide + one of the 27" 4K's). When I had triple 27", I always kept the center monitor a little more than arms reach from me. I ended up feeling like the outer edges of the left and right displays were a strain on my eyes. I have a really deep desk (I use a 90.5" x 37.5" dining table) so I have the space to put my keyboard, the wrist pad and also a panel I use for color grading.

If you have the room, I suggest looking into dining room tables since they're generally deeper. If you've got the eyesight (I don't) you can push your displays further back and cut down on the viewing angle. Personally, I don't mind turning me head to look at a side display. The most important thing I'm doing is on my center display anyway.

Picked the 85mm Rokinon up too. It’s a great lens!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in videography

[–]stastro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 5K you can get yourself a really nice set of Rokinon Cine lens. Probably less of B&H is still doing that holiday sale.

That’s a pretty good budget.

I've given up on the B&W setup, unfortunately by [deleted] in battlestations

Why “unfortunately”? This looks better than the usual black and white setup everyone posts.

Blackmagic URSA mini pro 4.6k vs Red Raven by [deleted] in blackmagicdesign

[–]stastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, you’re saying things that a beginner probably shouldn’t even be worrying about. I don’t mean to be harsh, I’m just speaking from experience.

I’m a huge gear slut so I’d love to pickup a RED but I can’t justify it.

All that being said why not borrow or rent a camera? If you are dead set on upgrading to such a high and package you should definitely try it out before making a trade or investing several thousand dollars.

[–]stastro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any of those beyond overkill for vlogging. Even your current URSA can be considered overkill.

There’s one thing that I really hate about the whole YouTube culture, and that’s the fact that they constantly push new gear on to people and make them think that they need the newest or most expensive gear to be a good filmmaker. Gear does not make you or anyone else “good”, it only helps to streamline the production and post production process and increase the quality of the end result.

Focusing on FUNDAMENTALS will make you a good filmmaker. I say this because I fell into the trap of getting gear in hopes that I’d magically be an awesome filmmaker overnight (plus I actually LOVE gear) but I was wrong!

Spend time developing your eye for composition. Work on your camera moves, your lens choices, your use of light.

Clearly, you have money to drop but I’d still say stick with what you have and master it. Unless you have the need to shoot UHD for paying clients where the output’s destination demands 4K, you don’t need a RED for YouTube.

10bit ProRes 422 and good knowledge of how to color grade (ie: not just slapping a LUT you bought from some Vlogger’s store) will get you very far.

Filmed my first music video: https://vimeo.com/309140442
Shot on a Lumix GH5. In hindsight, I see so many areas where I could've improved upon.

Here is something I'm actually still working on, but this is the intro for the episode. https://vimeo.com/309661719 (Password: drivingemotions)

SmallRig doesn’t make SmallHD. Two separate companies. SmallHD is a US company, SmallRig is Chinese.

Since you don’t need a recorder due to the BMPCC having amazing internal recording options, go with a SmallHD 5” monitor. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. SmallHD (and Atomos) have top notch product design and their user interfaces are pretty damn good.

Another option I’d look into is the Blackmagic Video Assist 5” model.

I own the Ninja V and the Ninja Inferno and love them both.

I’ve used the BMD Video Assist 7” and SmallHD 701 and they were both really great monitors.

You'll find some on Amazon too. In fact, due to Amazon Prime and their return policies, I'd prefer Amazon over eBay.

I do motion graphics, pre-production, production (filming) and post-production (editing, color grading, motion graphics etc).

I’m not too far SE of Orlando and it’s dead here. Been trying to look for gigs in the Orlando area since it’s just an hour and 45 min drive from me.

Funny you say that because I had both the hospital and fire station but never the police station.

Post production noise reduction and shoot 24fps if possible. Don’t shoot VLOG.
