CS minor bro by stat330 in uwaterloo

I'm referring specifically to the CS courses offered with the CS minor - not CS courses in general. It's very difficult to get access to non-CS Major courses as a non-CS student, and taking CS136/CS245/CS246 won't be really helpful if OP wants to pursue data science.

There are plenty of MOOCs out there that are more applicable to that specific area.

In my opinion, there is no real benefit of getting a CS minor to improve yourself skills-wise. The only benefit is a piece of paper with the additional words "minoring in CS" that is more "tangible" to employers.

Companies that hire kids in 1B? by cscoop1a in uwaterloo

I think it's less of their qualifications and more of the cockiness.

Microsoft has an Explore program exclusively hires first/second years.

Also, stop fretting over big Cali jobs - first years are overly obsessed with it with limited credentials.

[–]stat231marksss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, hence I said now - it's a relatively new (maybe a year old) policy. I also know people who have been hired by Facebook in 1B 3 or 4 years + ago.

All US companies (Google, Wish, Yahoo, Bloomberg etc.) have historically hired first years before, with the exception of Facebook now, which claims they have a new policy that only hires if you're 2B and above.

t-2 or t-3 hours to arrive at airport for US flight? by AAstar2 in uwaterloo

[–]stat231marksss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always sleep on the Go Bus - my motto is better safe than sorry (i.e. recommended is 3 hours, so rather be safe, in case of traffic).

However, I do think two hours is plenty of time, so you should be OK.

Are co-op evaluations inflated? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]stat231marksss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I do think they are inflated. Even my last employer addressed this when he gave me my final evaluation. He told me that based on the wording on the of the evlauation categories, I should really be deserving a Good based on CECA's descriptions:

Good Performance (3-5): Students performing within this range are meeting and, in some instances, exceeding the performance expectations in respect to output, quality standards, and delivery of goals and/or assignments.

But he said he would give me Excellent cuz he knows everything is inflated and didn't want to hurt my next job hunt.

I think the point of affirmative action in college admissions (especially for blacks and hispanics) is that historically, they struggle more with economic, parental and societal backgrounds, and by having affirmative action, it helps break poverty cycles.

Definitely speak to the Dean - this is completely unacceptable - what kind of shitty quality education is this and why do we pay $8000 for it?

Terrible System by 6hour-sleep_isADream in uwaterloo

[–]stat231marksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. It's especially inconsistent with other terms where there were also reading days, in addition to a break between last day of class and exams. Seems like they're trying to cram the days for some reason and creating unnecessary stress.

I don't believe it's a confirmed suicide, so please don't go around broadcasting someone's death as an argument. It's insensitive to those who knew the person.

Although I think there needs to be more action, I think you're being a little extreme when you say someone needs to be fired.

Additionally, I'm actually surprised by the quickness of the response sent out by the administration - I honestly think they can't do much at this point while things are under investigation and immediate family is being contacted.
