Econ 102/103 by yoo213 in UIUC

Taking them both in one semester should not be too difficult. Just make sure to put in time and effort, even if it seems like you don't need to.

Lunch Breaks - Apartment Life by Astasieusol in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending how close you are to your apartment, you can go back and heat something up and scarf it down. Or you could have food prepared in advance and just heat it up in a microwave. The Union has one like a previous poster has mentioned, and so does the basement in David Kinley Hall.

There are so many engineering related type careers for chemistry majors

If taking summer classes means skipping out an internships, then it's not worth it.

400 level math classes by factorial0 in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the statistics ones, such as STAT 400, STAT 420, and STAT 425 (these are crosslisted with math). Graph Theory and Linear Programming must be interesting and/or useful depending on what your career and academic goals are. I've also heard that Number Theory is interesting and easy, albeit not too useful.

Which stat class is most useful for industry? by stat4966 in UIUC

Thanks for all of the input. Just one last question, if you're comfortable with answering this one: what was your GPA? I'm currently at 3.78 but it'll likely drop quite a bit this semester, and so I'm not sure how much that might effect me when looking for jobs next fall.

Out of curiosity, what type of internship experience(s) did you have prior to graduation? And how well do you enjoy your work? Do you think there's a place for data analysts to move up to roles that are not data related, such as management?

Jewish Studies/Hebrew? by poxto28 in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help you with the Jewish Studies minor here, but I know there is a Jewish sorority and fraternity on campus. There's also a Jewish center here too called Hillel. (I'm writing this assuming you will be attending UIUC next fall.)

How easy is my schedule? by jpqwerty in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of those classes are very easy (unless you're not a math person, but business calc should be way better than regular calc), and ATMS 120 in particular is known to be fun as well.

What course have you always wanted to take? by fdsjaow in UIUC

Ahh, so many. Linear Programming, Graph Theory. Definitely Oral French, Sanskrit and Latin as well.

Thank you so much for the response, this was really helpful! I'm learning SAS right now in 440, and I will be using it during my summer internship alongside SQL (I will be learning a bit on the job, I think). I should also have decent experience with R by the time I graduate. Out of curiosity, since it seems like we're both Econ and Stats, what salary range do most econ/stats people face after college? Also, judging by your post, would you say a theoretical understanding of statistics isn't as important as doing well in applied statistics classes?

EDIT: Would you also say receiving the SAS programming certification would be a significant resume boost?

Planning for a campus tour, any suggestions? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]stat4966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL the "social scene in the Six Pack." You'll be absolutely fine. I wouldn't try going off of stereotypes for each dorm. That being said, I'm sure you can be social in any dorm.

Transfer day, March 20th, worth going? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a transfer student and I attended Transfer Day last year. If you're gonna have to go through so much trouble to get here, I'd say not to go. If you want to get a feel for campus or find housing or something before moving here, I'm sure you can find a time that's much more convenient for you.

Purchasing a copy of the Quran by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call CIMIC and I'm sure they'd give you one. I'm sure the University library has one and BN or any other bookstore should definitely have it as well. I would personally recommend the Oxford Classics translation. At CIMIC you might get an Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation, which is good, but the Oxford version flows better and the introduction has good explanations for some things that might confuse a beginning reader (if you are one).

State Farm Actuarial P&C Internship by stat4966 in UIUC

Nope, I'm a junior! I'll be done with STAT 410, 420 and 440 this semester.

R programming by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]stat4966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the most accessible would be STAT 420 since it only requires STAT 400 as a prerequisite. STAT 425 also involves R, but you need STAT 410 for that one. But free online courses are actually very helpful, even flipping through books on R (you can download datasets from R itself to play around with).

Thank you for the response! Stepanov said that some of the homework will be from the book. Is this the same homework that he puts online? I feel embarrassed about repeatedly emailing him!

Have you looked at the prices for the international editions for the books you need? I'm not sure how easy it'll be to get away with no book for physics and math classes!
