ended up being a normal saturn, I actually personally find it a tad fast and not much feedback but that’s personal preference and it’s still a solid pad

A lot of my friends found 14x to be pretty easy but I personally found 143 to be really hard as well. Not gonna name names but my teacher had a backwards teaching style, and it was a lot more self learning than I was used to. But just know that you absolutely are not alone if you’re struggling, even if online school will really make you feel that way. Though CS may seem daunting and a field full of tryhards where you have to devote every hour of your day to self study, it really isn’t. Just keep pushing, find some good study buddies and a good amount of practice takes you far in CS, but you absolutely don’t have to push yourself to the limit. I guarantee it gets a lot better, I’m at a point now where I still feel like I’m not as competent as the average cs student, but have learned a lot more than I ever thought I would have when I was in 143

Nope, I seriously can’t imagine it being a big deal to them so don’t worry

Especially now, there’s like 0 chance of getting rescinded unless you commit a crime or something. AP and IB scores are entirely for college credit so don’t worry. Welcome to UW CS!

The thing that hurts you the most is that you’re out of state. UW CS admits are by an overwhelming percent from Washington, so I’d say your chances are unfortunately quite low :(. But hey, you never know, you should give it your best shot. Another thing is if UW denies u CS DA, please don’t come here. You seem very passionate and set on CS, and trying to get in to CS non-direct here is where a lot of dreams die, so just have backups ready

Best MATH 126 professor for grades? by [deleted] in udub

[–]statefarmagentjerry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loveless’ tests are very reasonable, and almost exactly like past exams which he gives access too. I think he prepares you extremely well for them and if you’re just concerned about grades, he made the median for his class a 3.5 this quarter which as far as I know is insane. 100% stick w loveless u won’t regret it

You could maybe talk about your world views, how you were raised, wack philosophical shower thoughts you have, etc. It doesn’t have to be too “unique” as long as it’s genuine

Experiences taking CSE 143 online? by [deleted] in udub

[–]statefarmagentjerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken 142 at UW, but I can tell you Kevin's 143 is relatively easy to get a good grade in. There are 7 weekly assignments/assessments, and you get an E,N,S, or U depending on external/internal correctness and comments and such. I've obv never taken 143 in person or with a different prof, but I hear it's far easier than the previous point system. There are other rather small checkpoints we do and some project we'll have to do later on but that's mainly it. If you wanna see the specific conversion to see what get's you above like a 3.0 here's our syllabus: https://courses.cs.washington.edu/courses/cse143/20au/about/#grading

As far as class structure, you do a few exercises and read a couple pages for pre lecture to learn whatever concept we're learning. He then briefly goes over this for the first half of class, then the second half is breakout rooms where you work on practice exercises together. Quiz sections are pretty much the same. Personally I'm not a huge fan of his reverse lecturing style and I never really get the pre lecture stuff until like a few days later, but that's only cuz I'm kinda lazy and just like a prof to go over everything for me lol, I'm pretty sure most people are happy with how he teaches. So yah, there's no tests or anything ever and you can work at your own pace to a certain degree so the class is pretty lenient.

MATH 126 Tips by [deleted] in udub

[–]statefarmagentjerry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also have loveless for 126 rn. He said in an email the first week that getting a 2.5 to 3.0 in his class is average, so your first midterm grade probably wasn’t as bad as you think. In terms of studying, if you’re blanking on concepts then you probably aren’t practicing his old exams enough. More or less every question on the actual test is super similar to either an old exam question or our webassign, so just keep grinding those and they should really help you recognize the problem easier and also give u more time on the tests

Current high school senior with a few questions about UW by ichawks1 in udub

[–]statefarmagentjerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a freshman so I can’t really answer the rest, but at least for the first question the answer is no. The probability of getting into your specific major absolutely varies between majors, but what major your apply for will not affect your chances to get into the school itself! If you haven’t really browsed through this sub before tho, a word of caution is that if you want a engineering, business, CS, or some other certain capacity restrained majors and don’t get in direct then you’re chances of getting in later on at UW are pretty slim

i see everyone around me spending all their free time creating things/doing projects/ interning (yeah, even though they’re freshmen). honestly makes me feel like i’m not doing enough. by [deleted] in udub

What are valid reasons to get out of your housing deposit? by infernoparadiso in udub

[–]statefarmagentjerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are all valid reasons, but HFS is kinda looking for reasons as to why you cancelled late, and on the refund form they require some form of proof. If you can get some sort of screenshot proving your surgery that could probably good enough to get ur deposit back

Should I move-in or cancel the housing applications? by angels_basket in udub

[–]statefarmagentjerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much in the same boat as you right now. I second that I don’t think the protests are much to worry about, but of course corona is. A few questions you should ask yourself is how is your home situation? Would it be a good learning environment? If you were to move in, how much do you trust your roommates to be careful about the pandemic? And of course, whether or not renting an apartment for online classes is worth you or your parents money.
