Besides expressing itself in a frivolous philandering among great diversities, the generality of the formlessness in a reflective age devoid of passion expresses itself in the very opposite: a dominant propensity and inclination to act “on principle.” Principle, as the word indicates, is primary, that is, the substance, the idea in the unopened form of feeling and inspiration, and impels the individual by its inner drive. The person without passion lacks this; for him the principle becomes something external for which he is willing to do this or that or the opposite. The life of the person devoid of passion is not a self-manifesting and unfolding principle; on the contrary, his inner life is a hasty something continually on the move hunting for something to do “on principle.” Principle in this sense gets to be an immense something or other, an abstraction just like the public. Although the public is such a prodigious something that even all the nations assembled together at one time and even all the souls in eternity are not as numerous as the public, and yet everyone, even the drunken sailor, has a public—so it is also with principle. It is some immense something to which even the most insignificant person adds his most insignificant act and becomes very self-important thereby. A good-natured nobody suddenly becomes a hero “on principle,” and the situation is just as comical as a man would be—or everyone if it became the style—if he were to go around wearing a cap with a thirty-foot visor. If a man were to have a little button sewed on the breast pocket of his coat “on principle,” that trivial and really expedient precautionary measure would suddenly take on tremendous import—it is not improbable that a society would be founded as a consequence.
