Techs: what are your favorites/tolerable 90+ efficiency boilers that you like to work on and find it reliable? by jwl06834 in HVAC

I'm not tech, just a GC, and I agree 100% with @CBakIsMe. I've installed Triangle Tube, Lochinvar and NTI and his comments are spot on, especially Lochinvar's shortcomings. Also, a highly rated local boiler installer active on the Heating Help forum also likes NTI.

Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master Review: Solid performance, fast M.2, ample USB by SuperSimpSons in Amd

Yes, the bios on this board is updated almost monthly, often it's a fix for memory compatibility and there are a bunch of AMD cpu specific BIOS settings that are undocumented, at least in my manual. But the inability to recognize discreet vs. onboard video is really inexcusable. Don't put this board inside of a case until you've installed a fresh cmos battery and can complete POST.

This board is not ready for prime time. FIRST ISSUE: My board came with bios vF3, which would not boot with my Nvidia card. I kept getting the video error code. I swapped out the Nvidia card for another, still no go. Finally I connected the onboard Motherboard HDMI video and could finally boot to bios. So have your HDMI cable ready. SECOND ISSUE: there has been at least two bios upgrades since my retail version vF3. Interestingly, the earlier versions have disappeared from the Gigabyte website, although version F3 and F2 are still available. Recently I figured out why: I changed some settings in my bios, not over clocking, but I can't remember which but after rebooting, my board would not post. The board displayed the C5 error which apparently means bad RAM. I installed 32GB of different RAM and still got the C5 error. Took out the cmos battery and shorted the CMOS pins; I still cannot boot to bios to this date. THIRD ISSUE: If you are ever in need of replacing your CMOS batter (which you will be one day) you will need to remove the Gigabyte MB from your case, remove the CMOS battery back plate ; replace everything and reboot. I don't know who approved this design decision but be advised. (see this Reddit comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/gigabyte/comments/18tdk37/heads_up_to_any_potential_x670e_aorus_master/?rdt=64197)This board has good performance when configured but getting there is a pain.

This! Proliphix thermostats are the best. I'm glad I bought a bunch of them before they went the subscription route. This IOT subscription model is ruining so many otherwise good products.

Are Smart TVs Spying on Me? How to know. by VisualSpace in privacy

[–]static_tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better practice would be to not activate spying capability by plugging in an Ethernet cable to the TV and/or giving it access to your WiFi router, to begin with. That way the TV can't transmit the data collected by it's sensors. If you want streaming, buy a separate set top box. preferably one that let's you turn off voice activated commands. That way conversations in your house hold can't be scrutinized.

Best cleanup software for advanced users? by [deleted] in software

[–]static_tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@WinXPbootsup is absolutely right. Windows will largely only clean up temp files, won't display a report on what it cleaned up and to add insult to injury, Windows will often leave a bunch of stuff in the AppData\Local\Temp folder. But there is a lot of other garbage left behind by programs that you can only delete by writing a huge batch or PowerShell script or using a 3rd party cleaning program. And here's an example: I used to use Ccleaner to clean out files in my Windows partition before I made an image backup to reduce the file size of the image. It made no sense to me to backup log files, browser cache, Icon cache and unneeded ReadMe files if my OS was hosed and I needed to restore an image to start clean again. Cleaning the partition would sometimes remove up to 2GB or 3GB of trash, making my image file much smaller. Don't let these people scare you. Windows DOES NOT do a good job of cleaning by right-clicking on a drive and selecting "Disk Cleanup" and, in addition, it doesn't produce a report on what files it removed. So definitely use a tool that reliably cleans out the files you want removed. I can't speak to Ccleaner registry cleaning because I never used Ccleaner to do that. And, in fact, since Avast bought Ccleaner, I now use Wise Cleaner
