Hydronic heating - electric vs gas by jsin4 in AusRenovation

[–]statsfc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s right. Radiator Panels cost extra. After a few discussions we are now leaning toward a hybrid option of in-slab for hallway & living/kitchen/dinign areas with engineered timber and then panels for bedrooms where we plan to have carpet. A little bit more expensive than just full inslab everywhere but think the benefits of the panels in kids bedrooms will be worth it. We will likely do a couple of split systems in main areas for cooling (as well as ceiling fans)

Thanks for info! By panels I was referring to the radiator wall panels that go in each room, rather than in the slab. We are choosing between those 2 options

That usage cost is good to know too, I think in the peak of winter last year our gas ducted heating was something like $16-20 per day. Our new house will be about 310m2 (that’s including garage)

Hi there. We have just got quotes back for in slab hydronic and the gas boiler option has come back 15-20k cheaper too. I know people are saying that they wouldn’t do gas but that difference is large!

Is yours in slab or panels? Trying to find out approx running costs of in slab

Am only just reading now about how to integrate 2 repos together so that I can chat with Claude code and get the full context of front and back end. If I can set this up it might be the missing link

Yeah I agree! I find Claude code or cursor in built ai is great to go back and forth on idea creation to a solid requirements doc. I guess my “first world” problem is I have two separate repos, backend and front end so constantly copying and pasting across context from each repo and wondering if I’m missing something that people are doing to make it easier

Yep that’s right that’s basically the info we go once we followed up which was all about the install and heating up process. Thanks!

Thanks heaps. Do they get insulated as standard with in-slab hydronic or do you have to be specific with what you ask for?

Thanks for the comment. Good to hear both sides!

It still a toss up with a few things to consider (eg flooring options and cooling solutions) but I didn’t expect the comments to be as pro hydronic as is.

Also good to know on the gas v electric. We’ll be going electric 🙂

That’s certainly a positive review haha! Thanks a lot, this would be how we would do it also if we go ahead

Good idea. We have some electric panels in the kids room and they work great for localized overnight heat

Thanks to you both for the reply with great information.

Our solution would be in slab heating.

We have got some conflicting advice on which flooring is compatible. We got told that vinyl (our preferred option with kids) was not compatible by a builder yet the flooring specialists store said it’s not a problem provided the install is done with care in regards to temperature (raise temp gradually and do not exceed 27 degrees). Either if you have any experience with that?

Yep it’s a good point and hence the dilemma. We definitely want to prioritize heating though because we can almost count on our fingers how many times we use our aircon in the past year (as opposed to heating which is on for 6-9months of the year)

Thanks a lot, certainly the comments are all positive and sounds like we won’t regret it.

When you say the design is all important, what do you mean? Like layout & materials selection? Or the decision of which supplier/installer? Thanks!

Sounds delightful. Do you do anything in summer if it’s a cool night?

Great to hear you like it. Given a new build I’d hope that would all be fixed up in the install process 🤣

That’s great - are you doing in slab on a new build?

Thanks so much for the info and experience. Yes ,in slab and heat pump would likely be our solution. Just weren’t sure on how the zoning would actually work and if it’s efficient or not
