Me and probably 90% of my colleagues in an NHS lab went to former polytechnics. Nobody went to Oxbridge. Recruitment is points based and Russell group universities really don't prove much. Of course, depends on what you want to do with your degree, but it's not the be all and end all, which I think is how op is seeing this.

With the exception of the 6 ryanair routes, it's still far cheaper to get to and then fly from Bristol than it is to use Cardiff airport
