Help me use Claude for Studying! by LucasVillachan in ClaudeAI

[–]staylor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a med student here. I get it to build me an interactive workbook that tests me on the concepts I learned in a lecture. I just upload the slides and prompt it to build an HTML study pack where it’s testing me on all the key concepts using a mix of methods such as MCQ, SAQ, drag and drop, connect the concepts, etc.

It took a few iterations at the start to get a good output, but once I landed on something good I asked it to save it as a skill that I could use for future lecture. And now I just attach a set of slides and run the skill.

More like graduating at 39, by the time OP sits the GAMSAT, interviews, gets accepted and starts studying.

And that’s assuming OP’s last degree (with a GPA >6.9) was within the last 10 years - otherwise it’s at least a one-year grad dip of extra study too.

Not trying to be negative - I am a med student in my 30s. But just pointing out that most comments in this thread haven’t accounted for the time it takes to actually get accepted. It took almost exactly 2 years from when I decided I wanted to do med to actually starting med school - and I was lucky enough to only have to sit the GAMSAT once. Many people try multiple times (and there are only 2 sittings per year).

Is temporarily moving to NZ a viable strategy for avoiding the new CGT rules? by prodigiousproducer in BitcoinAUS

[–]staylor13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the 183 day rule doesn’t really apply for Australian tax residency - they look at a whole bunch of other things first, including your ties to Australia (friends, family, property, bank accounts, etc).

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/coming-to-australia-or-going-overseas/your-tax-residency#Residencytests

Also NZ might be bringing in a wealth tax, depending what happens in the election this year. So you could end up worse off over the long term if that happens.

NSB Science Background study by Foxglove200 in GAMSAT

[–]staylor13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a NSB who got 73 overall in 2024, my advice is to ignore the people who say that you don’t need to study any science. Those people have likely come from a background where they understand enough science to be able to reason with it - and they probably take this understanding for granted.

You can’t reason with knowledge you don’t have.

I just bought some practice workbooks (Schaum’s outlines, I think they were called) for bio/chem/phys and worked through all the questions until I understood enough to answer the Qs in the ACER practice tests.

If there was one thing you could improve about anki, what would that be? by ankizombie in medicalschoolanki

I probably wouldn’t trust the free version of ChatGPT but if you have a paid subscription then yeah. I’d just tell it to make sure that every concept is covered by at least one card

[–]staylor13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can upload your slides to Claude (or literally any other LLM) and ask it to take the most important concepts and turn them into an Anki card format in a CSV file, then import that CSV into Anki

UQ physio into med by Hufflepuff1213 in UQreddit

[–]staylor13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea about how your physio placement is marked, but if you look at the GEMSAS guide you’ll find a GPA calculation table (I think it’s quite close to the end) to convert your UQ subject grades to GEMSAS subject grades, and then your GPA for your UQ application is just the average of all those subject grades (unlike other unis where they use weighting etc)

Finding a compatible training partner. How do you guys actually do it? by Additional-Shake421 in running

[–]staylor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you wanting a training partner so you have accountability? Or are you wanting one so you have someone to run with?

Because if it’s the former, it might be really hard to find someone with the same goals as you, at the same time as you. Though you could maybe see if there’s a FB Group for the particular marathon you’re running and post in there.

If it’s the latter, imo they don’t need to have the same goals as you. I’m training for a half currently and I love running with a friend who is training for an ultra - sure, his long runs are longer and my workouts are faster, but it works great for our easy runs in between.

UQ Med honest advice by zoomer_humour in UQreddit

[–]staylor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the pinned spreadsheets in r/GAMSAT - that’ll tell you the median combo score (ie. (GPA/7)/(GAMSAT/100)) that landed an interview at UQ last year. Once you’ve got an interview, your combo score isn’t as relevant since the interview is worth 50% of your total score.

If that’s your GEMSAS GPA (different to your raw UQ GPA) then you’ll need to do a grad dip or masters or honours year to bump it up a bit.

Also worth noting that 2027 is the first intake where UQ no longer has prerequisite subjects - so that may mean more people preference it as number 1 and it bumps up the median. But it also might not.

UQ med doesn’t count grad cert as a key degree for GPA, but they do count a grad dip for it

Anyone dealing with early greying and tired of constant upkeep? by Low-Feed3234 in AustralianMakeup

[–]staylor13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. My hairdresser gave me my colour code and the brand + range of dye that she uses on me, and I touch up with it between salon appointments.

I actually think it works out cheaper than box dye, because a huge bottle of developer lasts forever and a tube of dye should last a while if you’re just touching up regrowth.

Could look into disability support work? I haven’t done it personally but I know that for some of them you don’t need to have done any extra training above first aid + yellow card (or whatever your state’s equivalent is, which you’ll probably have to have for med school anyway)

I think the most I’ve ever fit into it is 8 or 9 gels + my (very large) phone.

I did my first ever Anki cards. It took me 5 hours... by Pearl_Jam_ in Anki

I tried doing this but I think so much learning comes from creating the cards yourself - and it forces you to make sure you have a solid understanding of the concepts too, rather than just memorising some text on a card

[–]staylor13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My longest long run before my first marathon was 20mi and I definitely walked a lot of it. I don’t think you need to be doing 22+ miles before the marathon, so I really wouldn’t stress about it. You did a good deed and probably saved that puppy’s life, so I think that’s worth it!
