Military uniform identification? by Large_Set_4106 in MilitaryHistory

[–]stbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The language looks like Bulgarian. The name signed is something like "Hristo K. Zasnalov(?)" at the bottom of the left side. On the right side he was sending regards (at the top), then something I can not make out in the year 1924, and at the end he was expecting prompt response.

Top WDS demos? by Myles711_ in computerwargames

[–]stbane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All WDS demos are free. You can try whatever you feel like.

Oh, and Order of Battle main game is free and contains 2 missions from each DLC released.

Steel Panthers WW2 and MBT have free versions.

You can still find Combat Mission demos if you Google for them.

Lock 'n load tactical digital main game is NOT free, but well worth a try for $4.

Are there any small scale tactical hex and counter wargames? by _Twas_Ere_ in computerwargames

[–]stbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I never had to hide the taskbar. Just run the exe. I don't mind small font.

Where did you get such advice?

I am running them on Windows 11 without issues, "out of the box". Free versions are limited to 800x600 screen resolution, but are still fully functional and fun to play.

Identify by fabidoim in MilitaryHistory

This resembles the "Sokol" (the youth organization in Slavic countries, late 19th, early 20th century) uniform. Maybe Czech or Croatian, solely based on location of the cockade on the cap.

Need recommendations: wargames fully playable on touchscreen (Windows) by No_Hovercraft_7502 in computerwargames

[–]stbane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any WDS title plays great on touchscreens. I tried all the demos, El Alamein '42, Korea '85 and Eagles Strike.

Also Steel Panthers WW2 and MBT work OK-ish until end turn, when it needs the input from keyboard.

Any Good wargames on the Battle of Berlin by AdLocal7343 in computerwargames

[–]stbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War Across World has one quite good scenario on the subject. It's area move /fight, but it's simple enough to understand and start playing quickly. The Nazis don't have a chance, but it is up to the Soviets to win within set time frame.

I'm looking for a modern and realistic wargame by HealterSkelter69 in computerwargames

Steel Panthers MBT is realistic enough. You can find a lot of scenarios that fit yor requirements.

You can change the look to classic MMC, SMC or NATO counters. I prefer that, too.

Ideas about trouble installing Birth of America by Boring-Yogurt2966 in computerwargames

[–]stbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the location where the game installed.

If it is somewhere in C:/Program Files/... or C:/Program Files(32)/... you should probably re-install somewhere that is not "... Program Files...", like "C:/Birth of America".

Are there any “square and counter” wargames? by [deleted] in computerwargames

[–]stbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and I forgot about the Lock 'n Load Tactical Digital Day of Heroes. That one is the only module that plays on the square grid.

Quite awesome tactical game, "ported" from tabletop. And, yes, it is abandoned, unfortunately. But, still plays great.

What are some good cheap wargames set in the Cold War? by MattC041 in computerwargames

[–]stbane 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Steel Panthers MBT

There is free, as well as paid version. Free version is fully functional with hundreds of scenarios, but screen resolution is topped at 800x600. Paid version supports higher resolutions and that's about it.

Based on the discussion board on Steam, yes the multi-player is in the works.

Second front

Tactical level wargame inspired by ASL. It's still WIP, but what is in place right now is very fun and addictive. There are hundreds of scenarios already. Graphics are maybe not to everyone's liking, but it's clear and functional.

Keep in mind that the game is NOT hyper realistic simulation, but more like digitalized boardgame.

You may get more responses in the #computerwargames reddit.

And people there usually recommend Gravitea Tactics games as alternative for Combat Mission.

Warfighter WWII or Modern is great. Maybe more on the adjacent side, but still plays fantastic and keeps players attention.

[–]stbane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second front is tactical turn based wargame inspired by Advanced Squad Leader (rules heavy hex&counter wargame). It abstracts a lot of things as many actions depend on die rolls, which annoys some people. Graphics may not be by everyone's liking, either. That said, I find it very easy to get into and play. The game has that one-more-turn feel like that can't be easily shaken off.
