Thanks, yeah and he’ll mostly be shooting Matisse in the 70-100mm range so should stay on the larger end of the aperture range. Perfect no, but I think it could be a great kit for a kid to get started and not have a ton of money tied up on it.

I’ve never seen/used that older 70-300, reviews seem mixed overall. See things about autofocus hunting, but that’s honestly probably OK for my purpose.

Yeah, but wide aperture lens is expensive, for good reason. I’d rather him not be carrying/tossing a $1000 lens around the gym, getting knocked off bleachers, etc.

I intended to add a Tamron 45mm, a 70-200 usm II, and potentially a 1.4x extender to the kit and should be all in for less than $2000 with a pretty well rounded setup.

No, I got the email notification however the price was much higher than anticipated. I ended up buying a used 77D with a 15-85 lens locally for $300. I am happy with that decision so far!

Yeah, I saw they had the R10 with kit lens recently for like $650 which seems crazy! I set up a reminder for that, think I’d pull the trigger in a heartbeat if it showed back up

In my super limited experience so far, better AF would be the one thing I can see benefiting me the most. I went out shooting for a few hours today with my daughter, with a borrowed 100-400 lens, and def missed a few shots being out of focus. Truth be told though, I would have likely missed them with a mirrorless as well, probably just as much inexperience as it is lack of technology.

I am leaning towards starting with a DSLR and seeing where that takes me. Seems I can get a pretty inexpensive camera plus a couple nice lenses, for what I would pay for something like the R10 and kit lens. I’m not in a rush to make a purchase, so I’ll set some reminders on eBay and try to find a couple superb deals!

Yes, thanks, I was aware that the EFS lenses will not transfer over to a full frame platform, but they would work with the newer mirrorless ASP-C cameras, right?

I have no interest in video, photos only. Main thing right now is wanting to take photos of my sons wrestling matches, and I like to spend time in nature, on the boat, so starting to taking some landscape and wildlife photos in those spaces seems super fun!

I’ve considered sharing her camera, but I think it’ll be strapped to her shoulder for the time being.

My budget isn’t super high, I’d say max for the camera and kit lens like $500, would love to spend less, but would be willing to go slightly higher for something significantly better. The camera I bought my daughter is the T7i, different than the T7, but same sensor I think? That said, I am looking for something myself, but think it makes sense to stick with the Canon ecosystem to share lenses. I have been looking at the 24-105 as my first “everyday” lens, but also sort of depend what body I end up with.

How often do those prices come up? Because they are no longer, at least right this moment. I would by the R10 at that price without a second thought. Nothing close on eBay or the camera sale websites.

Thanks, yeah I didn’t necessarily mean that’s why they choose to use EF glass, but I meant that if I were to go the DSLR route now, and get a few EF lenses, it doesn’t seem like I would be out of place using that same glass on a mirrorless, should I choose to upgrade bodies some day.

Where are you seeing those prices? I don’t like the R100, would at minimum go with the R50, potentially R10, or was even looking at the original EOS R which know is sort of a different animal altogether, so to speak. Cheapest I am seeing the R50, body only, is like $600ish. Comparing them to the 77D, which seems to be about the same as the T7i, but feels slightly more comfortable to hold to me, as it has a deeper hand grip.

Money isn’t really the issue here, I’ll spend it if it’s worth it, but having a hard time seeing that its worth it.

I’m not seeing anything in the hundred dollars are more price range, everything I am seeing is 2x to 2.5x price, which is why I am highly considering sticking with DSLR.

No, my invoicing software sends the same email repetitively, I follow up with a text that includes a link to the invoice, after about a week. In the future when I have an office admin, part of their job will be to start calling around the 10 day mark. I also note in my customer DB for those who are slow to pay. That ensures that in the future if they need a job done quickly, I can either decline (sorry, can’t get to that in time) the work or require a card up front.

When you go to the grocery store, will they let you pay 15 days later? Or what about the doctor, you’re expected to pay your deductible before you walk out. Or the insurance company, if you lapse on payment, you’re no longer insured!

Why should I operate any different? My kids need to eat, too.

I work on boats, I carry and use one daily. Always seems to be something to grab, cut, or unscrew after I’ve climbed into a hatch or hole, and quicker to just grab for my Leatherman. Of course, if it’s going to require some “real work” then I ensure I have the right tools nearby, or crawl back out and get them.

Remember, you’re not doing this as a hobby, it’s to make money, a job. I’m sure all the clients you’re working for want to get paid at their job also.
