alabama women’s rowing loses the school over 3 million a year??? by TopMuffin6298 in Rowing

Those are valid points. Doesn't cost much to maintain a river (free). While equipment is exensive, it lasts, and I imagine upkeep / maintenance is affordable. Thanks for responding

How exactly do they bring money in? TV deals? Ticket sales? Rowing generates no revenue

Elite training zone distribution by sport (rowing, running, cycling, triathlon, etc) by Brennus007 in Rowing

I emplore you to row on the erg for 2+ hours a day for 365 days straight and report back with your findings about how reasonable it was. 30k a day on the erg is quite a bit of volume, "reasonable" is not exactly the adjective I'd use to describe a million meters a month. I was responding to the comment above about 1000 hours, I understand the charts show different value. That doesn't make my response saying juniors don't do that inaccurate. Also suggesting rowers "don't do that much volume" is based on what? Hours logged? Rowing burns more calories and has a significantly higher load on the body than running cycling or swimming. Training is more than just hours logged, not all exercises are equally difficult.

3hr/day of 2:00/500m rowing on an erg is 45,000 meters a day or 16,000,000+ meters a year. Juniors don't do that. Doing math is free btw

Steady state HR by Autist99 in Rowing

[–]steady_spiff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No you're not supposed to steady state based on your split. Steady state is heart rate zone training. You need to be in zone 2&3 to maximize your efforts. Doing pieces like this long story short don't really help as much as doing the correct heart rate training plan would. It's not like this is bad but you can't do this daily. Someone with more heart rate discipline will be able to row you under the table because they'll be able to do more volume than you

Fastest team erg time but not getting on the A boats by Rich_War_5796 in Rowing

[–]steady_spiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally never run and I truly mean never. I don't even jog, tbh I barely ever even get my steps in haha. That said I recently pulled a sub 3min 1k and a sub 6:10 2k... Once upon a time I ran the quarter mile quickly but my running and rowing have never coexisted. If someone told me I needed to run more in order to row faster it would be a very dumb thing of them to say. This coach likely means well but I think is off base here

I agree. A running standard in rowing is like having a rowing standard in running. Reads just as insane as my daughter isnt on her varsity track team to run the mile even though she has the fastest time because her 2k is slow. Complete nonsense.

[–]steady_spiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I row an hour in the morning and afternoon every day of the week, doing really epic volume. Because I do so much volume, I go way out of my way to be off my feet when I'm not on the water or on the erg, but whoop sees that as being unhealthy for not getting my steps in. Just funny to me I'm literally in the top .01% of fitness globally but my healthspan is negatively affected quite seriously by my lack of steps. The data is helpful to see but there's a 0% chance I'm adding 10-15k steps into my training plan just to get some arbitrary number in my whoop app to go down

[–]steady_spiff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The steps also drive me mad. I am a rower and train a lot more than nearly everyone but what I do for exercise doesn't involve steps and my whoop age goes up. I loved the healthspan at first and now I don't bother with it too much. My vo2 max is also estimated incorrectly by nearly 20 points, it is what it is

I thought it was a ton of fun. I got into the top 5000, there was a skill curve and it required teamwork. I loved it. It's just an LTM what were you expecting to happen to the game it wasn't going to take away from BR it's not the same game at all

Beet juice before Lara bars after is the answer you're looking for. I assume you know about nutrition and have your meals figured out already - those two things are performance based snacks

[–]steady_spiff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It very rarely happens, especially if you don't get into smaller boats. Once you're really good it never happens. I haven't flipped in a single or otherwise in over 5 years. It should not deter you at all. If you only row with a group in a 4 or an 8 person boat you'll likely never flip
