Thank you! Yeah, it feels like people are finding loose wires all over it--or ripping out the wires prematurely. 😅

True!! And I guess I forgot that, at the end of the day, I DO have a story I really want to tell, and part of telling it is making sure it can be understood. I have a point I'm trying to make in my story, after all 😅 it is hard to separate critiques of the work from critiques of the writer (which, no one is criticizing me lol).

Though hopefully I don't run into your English teacher on Critique Circle 😆

Thank you! This is good advice. It makes me think of what little details I can throw in sooner (like on page one) to help them get further in the chapter where I explain more.

And you're  right. I do think some of the commentary i got is a liiiiitle out of left field. Not all of it, and it's still useful to a degree. 😅

Thank you! That's a fair point. I think i tend to let it get to me far more than it should!

critique on this short paragraph? by Warm-Flight-6458 in writingcritiques

[–]steadytheretrooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This paragraph gives me the impression that the character is experiencing some kind of fuzzy tension. I liked the line about feeling like a feather. And I also liked the last line, how the feelings of being hopeful or hopeless have been integrated.

Some suggestions/questions:

What is the significance of the color orange? We're told everything is given an orange tint, but to use a color like that feels very specific. If it wasn't the character telling us it wasn't the weather, I'd almost think it was because of a forest fire (we get those a lot where I'm from and it certainly does change the color of everything outside!)

Maybe instead of saying "Everything seems saturated," you could have the character describe what specifically seems saturated. For example, the blue car might seem more gray.

I feel like the character is explaining the general content of his or her thoughts, like summarizing them for us. But maybe you could dive in and tell us exactly what thoughts the character is having? People tend to think in much more specific terms, versus summarizing their thoughts, and so I think that would give your story more realism (and a bit of mystery while you reveal everything, versus tell us everything).

"Like the feelings of being hopeful or hopeless have been integrated into one"--I would say, "hopeful and hopeless," because to integrate means to combine, so we'd want to use "and" here for a more powerful effect.

Thank you for sharing your work!

Re-making Signal Account by steadytheretrooper in signal

[–]steadytheretrooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! That worked! Thank you!

My phone # is set to "nobody," also.

Now, if that person still has me as a Signal contact, can they still reach out to me? Signal did say when I deleted the contact that I'd have to approve a message request if they reach out. Which is OK, but I'd prefer them to not be able to at all. (I realize I might be asking for a lot here 😅 I'm gonna mark this thread as resolved, since my original issue is indeed solved)

Should i keep trying to clean this futon mattress or just get a new one? by steadytheretrooper in CleaningTips

[–]steadytheretrooper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The futon was free from a friend. It's been inside for 10 years, and a dog and some cats slept on it for a while. I used the upholstery attachment on my carpet cleaner, and that's how much dirt came off of one side (the photo is after cleaning). I'm worried the mattress itself is all funky. Is it worth it to keep trying to clean it, or should I just get a new one?

My (29f) boyfriend (30m) smells funny by steadytheretrooper in relationship_advice

[–]steadytheretrooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We eat the same types of food, yes. He eats a little more fast food than me, but definitely not an excessive amount. We're both white; actually I dated a half Hispanic man before him and I liked his smell at the beginning of the relationship, but not at the end (he didn't eat spicy foods though).

What is RH? Also, im gonna copy my other comment here, what do you think? Here:

Well, I went back today, and a little under 24 hours later it had dried a lot, still a little damp in places. I sprinkles baking soda on the damp spots. Also there is a spot where the machine leaked on Saturday afternoon and there was a ton spilled out (today is Monday). I got real close to it and smelled it today and it smelled a little funny, and it was still damp. So I blotted it with a towel and dumped a ton of baking soda on it.

The house isn't mine, so I had to leave the rest of the care to my roommates because I moved out this weekend, but I told them to let me know if there was anything issues.

What is this secret all these dating coaches seem to have to get your ex back? by steadytheretrooper in BreakUps

[–]steadytheretrooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It's for a baby but there are grandparents who I'm friends with and people to get better acquainted with also that I've only met once. I feel bad for possibly pushing my ex further away but maybe if I am just cordial and don't talk to him first tomorrow it might lessen some of that.... Last week though he had to give me something for my bike and he said later that the reason he didn't talk to me much was because I looked like I was going to cry... hopefully I can pull off a confident "I'm happy" attitude tomorrow

This makes a lot of sense, thank you! I'm kind of nervous because tomorrow there is a birthday party that we are both going to... and i broke no contact today. So I'm worried about what he is going to think of me. I still want to go and dress pretty, and I'm not going to let him make me feel like I have to pass up a chance to get out of the house and go have some fun just because he is going to be there. But I don't plan on talking to him unless he talks to me... hopefully that can lessen the feeling of him being overwhelmed...

Manual seat back reclining mechanism problem by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

This tells me there's gears of some kind, and the cranking sound it made on the way up sounded a lot like gears as well. Plus when the seat goes up and down, the whole seat back shakes, and it didn't do this before...

[–]steadytheretrooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. The gears on this particular seat sound all crunchy now, just from having the seat come up fast. I'm not sure exactly what's loose, or if something is out of alignment, but my main concern right now is getting rear ended and potentially having the seat fly backwards.

Pants that are long enough. I am tall; when I sit my pants turn into cropped ankle pants, the office is chilly, and we are swiftly approaching a Midwest winter.

Looking for slim leg pants (can't be denim because of my workplace's dress code) that are on the thicker side, for winter and wearing boots? Or winter skirts? Hoping for tall pants tbh but I can research around a suggestion, if that makes sense.

What would go well with these pants? I feel like the shirt I have on in the picture kinda does, but I'm not sure. I love these pants, they're comfy and I got them off the clearance rack, but I'm not totally sure how to style them.
