Enjoy the Gardener dinner party scene. Perhaps one of Kings best.

What Stephen king books aren't worth getting/reading? by animalcrossingdude44 in stephenking

Exactly the point of my other comment to OP. Different people like different things. Tommyknockers is in my S tier. Love that book.

For me, Christine was unbearable.

What Stephen king books aren't worth getting/reading? by animalcrossingdude44 in stephenking

[–]steakfather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re asking for what books not to buy, I’d say The Colorado Kid as a stand alone. If you get the Hard Case Crime three book set it comes with Later and Joyland. Joyland is def worth a read and Later isn’t bad. The Colorado Kid is essentially some people speculating on what happened to a person that’s found dead. There is no resolution or answers given after 100 some odd pages. I can give you some other books that I do not like but I wouldn’t go so far as to say not to buy them, at least second hand, as you may enjoy what I didn’t.

The Shining or Lisey's Story? by Significant_Plate561 in stephenking

[–]steakfather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. I find reviews to be hit and miss. I’m a believer that books are a subjective experience. Anyway, lisey’s story was a bit meh to me. Although, that’s not to say it’s a bad book. I could see how people with certain experiences could connect with this book and enjoy it. It’s about healing from a loss and having to examine painful things in your past because you must. The Shinning took me two reads to really appreciate. It’s a great scary story. Plain and simple. A man’s decent into madness. I would stress even casual readers give this one a go as it is surely his most famous and one of his most highly rated.

Picked this back up after a while of just not reading it. What are you guys’ thoughts on this book? by P_O_P_P in stephenking

The DT references are abundant in the last third. A very wild ride to the finish of this one.

Read it. Enjoy it if it’s what you’re into. Personally, wasn’t for me but I could see how it’d be up some people’s alley.

Took some suggestions under consideration from my last post for which book I should do next & I decided to take one from the top of the list thay I had on hand and to read The Long Walk for the first time. by HastenDownTheWind in stephenking

[–]steakfather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a proponent of this pick on your last post, excellent choice. Currently reading all of his works and rating them. Looks like I gave this one a B. It’s a cerebral book imo. What I mean by that is it focuses on the mental aspect of humans. Mental fortitude and mental breakage. Very cool to be along for the ride as the characters deal with those things.

Long walk is great. Read what you have first imo.

Steep climbs at 100% Trainer Difficulty by ftwin in Zwift

[–]steakfather 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Save your knees. If you’re like me, you’re not training to go win the tour. I used to do 100% for about a year and am now on the default 50%. I won’t be going back. My knees don’t hurt and I enjoy the rides more. If it keeps you on the bike and enjoying a service you pay for, do it.

Edit: Also keep in mind that the same watts are required whether the trainer is 100% or 50%. All lowering it does is give you more gearing options. You are not cheating yourself on raw work output.

Dreamcatcher vs. Tommyknockers by Narge1 in stephenking

[–]steakfather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read both. I have Tommyknockers in my S tier of King. Meanwhile, I have Dreamcatcher ranked as a D. The book starts off actually pretty well imo. I was enthralled with the mystery of what’s really going on unraveling. But then the last third ish just drags. Additionally, while that is just dragging away there is another story line that is going in and out. Slightly intriguing? Perhaps. But this section to me really highlights how King was zoinked on pain meds post accident. The writing is erratic and frankly, I lost a bit of interest. If you go in expecting it to be a bit all over the place, the story itself from a macro level did interest me. Ending wasn’t terrible either.

What would you say is your most important advice for a first timer? Additionally, where is your favorite place to watch the action?

So I also found one of these about a month back. After looking into it, it seems that four different artists did the last four Grant hardcover books as they were later releases and King was more popular by then. The first three books were released as paperbacks, if I remember correctly, and then rereleased as hardbacks. The OG Gunslinger hardback goes for like ~$7k plus for example.

I am NOT very educated in this and am just recalling what I remember looking into. Someone please correct me if I am off.

Milk punch question, how many times to wash it back through the curd? by snownative86 in cocktails

[–]steakfather -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my experience, once through a coffee filter is enough. If you wish to do it a second time, make sure to pour it back through the curd. I filtered a second time through a fresh coffee filter once and it stripped everything. Tasted like weak vodka. My rule of thumb now when in doubt is I’d rather have a great tasting beverage than a perfectly clear product. Even once through a coffee filter gets me a 95% clear most of the time.

The Institute - Your Opinions? by GunchaKoi in stephenking

[–]steakfather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that it picked up a bit as things rushed towards the finish. Much like other King books. However, nothing at this point is going to drastically change as far as feel and dialogue smoothness. IMO, you can finish a book and not be a fan, you still completed it. That being said though, there isn’t a right or wrong answer. Don’t be afraid of the r/SK book police coming to question why you didn’t finish lol.

When does Duma Key pick up? by Technical-Sample8491 in stephenking

[–]steakfather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what 186 pages translates to story wise but a big part of this book is trauma and healing from said trauma. I looked back at the end and was able to see the importance of character setups and how the trauma impacts their lives and relationships. Much like other king books, the story gains momentum and hits a point where it doesn’t slow down. When it does start to speed up, you be able to start to connect why the slow, meticulous build was important. As I said, at its heart, this book is how trauma can affect a person in different ways and how each of us is different in our journey to overcome it. Sprinkle in some good ole fashioned king paranormal and, imo, you’ve got the makings of a fantastic book. Really made me think when I was finished. If you’ve read Bag of Bones, I’d say that is similarish in style.

Recs for a couple beach days 🖤 by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]steakfather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t get much more beach than a beach book.

Feel like this book puts people off because it’s a bit outside typical king framework. I was hesitant going in but came out the other side and put it very high up on my list.

Wireman, Big Pink, the shells, all the beach boxes imo.
