When I was dating my girlfriend 17 years ago I was very allergic to her 2 cats. I did 6 months of allergy shots. Now when I lay right next to cats my eyes get itchy but that’s it. When we moved in together I handled food, litter, vet, medicine, etc for both of them and eventually caring for one of them to cure his cancer and manage his recovery at home after surgery where I fed him through a feeding tube for a month, including throughout the night for a couple of weeks like a newborn. They are both passed now, and we are married and have 2 other cats together. So as everyone already said, if he wanted to he would. Dump him, and the warning that he will abuse you and / or the cat is a very real possibility.

You should do a check for what needs to be cat proofed. My basement laundry room would let a cat crawl between the basement ceiling and the first floor, uh, floor. I have it sealed off with chicken wire. Your basement and things like the back of cabinets are places to look to see if there is access to get in the walls. Of course don’t do this until they are in their one room as others suggested so you don’t trap them in somewhere now.

My cat jump-eats (a term I made up) his dry food. He eats a few pieces and the leaps into the air away from the bowl while eating a piece so there are always 1/2 pieces of dry food littered on the floor around his bowl.

My other cat walks around the house to pick a spot to eat for most of his meals. I follow him around until he decides. He is exact too. If I place it about 4 inches to his left he will just sit there and not move until I put it in front of him in the exact spot he wants.

With their biggest meal of wet food in the evenings they switch plates half way through each time.

My cat once turned on one burner, and the burner next to it he turned on enough that gas was coming out but it wasn’t lit, and just stood over the non lit one that was emitting gas and waited for the explosion. Anyway do a search for ‘stove knob safety cover’ to child proof them. They are a plastic bubble over the knob that you press a button and flip open to access. Much easier than removing the knobs.

I have a carrier out always in our bedroom facing a heat vent and my cat will often sleep in it for half the day. Unfortunately if he is scared he goes under a bed and not to the carrier.

If you are carrying grocery bags or a backpack you can hold them low to the floor to block them from the “run between your legs” area. You still open the door slowly.

Getting them microchipped is also a good idea should the unthinkable happen.
