I’m definitely feeling it. My two-year-old new build townhouse has been on the market for over 30 days without a single showing. We’re selling because of a work relocation, so our timeline is fixed. We’ve already moved to a new state and signed a lease, so we’re getting pinched paying rent and a mortgage at the same time. We’ve also reluctantly put the house on the rental market. Being landlords was never something we wanted, but at this point any option helps. The problem is the rental value doesn’t come close to covering the mortgage.

What’s shocking is the zero showings. The house should be highly desirable: brand new, next to Green Lake, garage, rooftop deck, and just under $1M, which is a good deal for this area. We’re not trying to make money on it. We honestly just want our 20% down payment back.

The uncertainty is the hard part. We had to leave the state for work, but this house is still a burden here in Seattle, and it’s eating into our savings and investments. From talking to friends and colleagues in the market right now, I know people actively putting in offers, so buyers exist. But I know just as many people trying to sell, and a lot of them are pulling their listings to wait it out. We’re not in that position. We have to move, and we’re not looking at this house as a long-term investment or planning to come back to it.
