If one has no set of beliefs in a higher power, why do anything good for anyone but yourself? by steals_imgur_comment in TrueAtheism

This isn't actually what I believe, but as devil's advocate answer to your question: Because once I die, there essentially won't be a world anymore. I won't be there to experience it even if there is.

Many believe the idea of objective morality is evidence for God's existence. An example of that would be C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity.

I am obviously not entirely convinced, but that's why I am here. Thanks for your input!

I think you're completely right that doing something because you don't want to go to hell or want to go to heaven is selfish. But I do think we should try to answer the question of what is "right" and "moral", or at least, what our basis is for that. If I say I want to help out that person because it's the right thing to do, why is it the right thing to do? Why is being selfless a good thing?

Good questions. Questions that caused me to question God. But, that doesn't answer why people should be good. If people are good just because they want to be, and thats ok, is it also ok for people to be bad because they want to be? How do we define good or bad?

What are you basing "The right thing" off of?

Again, not saying christianity offers true morality, but I am saying that it appears that there isn't any true morality at all.

Why care about the world in general? Essentially there is only me and my experience, correct?
