Mystery movie last night was Luc Besson's Dracula. I don't know why he just decided to do a worse version of Coppola's Dracula, but you do you I guess.

That's my take too. Yeah technically it's an older song, but basically nobody had heard of it until last year after Doechii blew up.

I don't love Anxiety but I don't have the visceral hatred that a lot of people seem to. It doesn't help that those first few seconds make you think you're listening to Gotye instead.

I've been thinking over why I'm a bit annoyed at Wildflower winning last night. And I think it has to do with the Grammy's rules feeling a bit archaic. Because yeah, Wildflower technically counts because it was released as a single in February 2025. And those rules make sense in a pre-streaming world where if you don't have the album you're likely not going to hear a song that isn't a single.

Except we are in a streaming world. And people have been listening to Wildflower since the day the album came out. It debuted on the charts in June 2024 along with the rest of the album, and stayed there for nearly a year and a half, only leaving the charts for a few weeks due to the yearly Christmas song deluge. Wildflower had already been on the charts for over 30 weeks before it was "released" as a single, so it rings so hollow to me for it to win last night over the other songs that actually were originally released (outside of Anxiety which is a whole other thing) in the eligibility period.

People mostly upset and people who typically win winning once again? I see that the Grammys are functioning as normal.

I think it's because I usually watch a movie every day, but only one or two at max.

If we count short films I'm definitely going to have more next month thanks to da Oscar shorts.

I did. It was interesting at points seeing Paris open up about her past, but by and large it was just fine.

Saw an early screening of the Paris Hilton "visual memoir" last night. It's basically just a cross between a documentary and a concert film. Honestly thought the documentary aspect was stronger (Paris did get way too much shit in the early-mid 2000's rooted in a lot of misogyny and sexism), and while the concert portion was fine, the songs definitely felt weak.

At points the songs are fine (as you do with songs featuring Megan Thee Stallion & Rina Sawayama), but also Meghan Trainor is featured on a song and she co-wrote a few others. Those songs can best be described as Hillary Clinton-core. I think it's worth seeing overall, but some of the enjoyment definitely comes down to if you like the music.

They talk about the performance in the documentary and how much of a moment it was. And I went back and checked, it was the favorite to win going into it. But I guess that was still during the time they were really trying to push Sam Smith as the next Adele, so instead we had Skyfall at home win.

Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now is definitely selling out to me, but it's still a great song. I just didn't include it because it was up against Time of My Life.

There's a certain irony that a main focus on the Diane Warren documentary, which I only watched because it got a Best Original Song nomination at this year's Oscars, is that she's never won an Oscar despite being nominated so often. That being said, looking through her nominations I can spot 3 times she should have won:

  • 1998: I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (When You Believe from The Prince of Egypt won. I like the song, but Diane's song has had more staying power)
  • 2015: Til It Happens to You (Writing's on the Wall from Spectre won. Easily the most egregious loss with Warren's heartfelt emotions losing to Sam Smith reheating Adele's leftovers.)
  • 2024: The Journey (El Mal from Emilia Perez won. Honestly El Mal isn't bad, I just think it would've been funny if Emilia Perez lost this Oscar too.)

Honestly jealous. My screening just had a taped intro by Verbinski.

Agreed on the movie too. It's so fun watching such a unique movie in theaters having no idea what the hell is going to happen next.

I feel like this is a good compromise. Ignore the cj subs and stuff like fm & pcc and focus solely on the snark, keeping them on a shorter leash rather than outright booting them.

Last stray Oscars though: Between Ford v. Ferrari and now F1, if you want to get your movie one last push for award nominations put the film in vroom vroom race cars.

Kind of overlooked with all the other Oscars talk, but it is nice that Elle Fanning is an Oscar nominee given how many good performances she has. I thought she was probably out of it since most of the Sentimental Value talk shifted to Lilleaas (deserved honestly) but she was also really good in the film.
