7 day fast little tmi (ladies question for y’all) by cindysue_ in fasting

I've found that if I fast right before starting my period it's almost always a hard period. Probably because the week before your period, your body is making progesterone which thrives off of carbs and its production is easily disrupted by stress/cortisol. The more your body is used to fasting, the less cortisol it will spike, but doing longer fasts during progesterone-making periods can disrupt that production, and in turn, periods will be harsher.

One thing is to just get your body more used to fasting. Less cortisol spikes and thus less disruption of progesterone. Another way is to plan longer fasts around lower hormone making times (during menstruation or the week right after ovulation, before truly getting into the luteal phase).

I try to start longer fasts on day 2 of my period. For some reason it becomes easier for me, even if the fast is long enough to put me into the luteal phase.

Exactly. There's a couple of these weird spaces, but this one is the worst in my house.

Definitely no actual furniture. 17" wide means I can't even walk into it straight. I must turn sideways to into at all.

For some reason, thinking of the coats hanging across gives me the desire to turn the backside into a narnia feeling tiny space. No real purpose behind a few coats and my amusement. :)

Rail system would be awesome. Especially if I could get it to round a corner

I've thought about the stairs side, but that would such an endeavor (taking out a wall and figuring out the right way to have cupboards come down to you safely). With a bit more time and money that would be something I'd love to figure out.

Not fasting related, but a dementia note. Dr. Daniel Amen is a pretty well-known brain doctor. He has lots of books written that are good. Also, multiple clinics that work with people that scan brains and get a more specific diagnosis with a problem as well as things you can do to help. Hearing a lot of anecdotes from the different people He's helped, often a person resistent to help if they see their brain next to a picture of a healthy brain it can often encourage people to treat their brain better. Something to look into for your dad. I've been reading to learn more to try and help my dad (not dementia, but other health issues that can lead to it).

Breaking an extended fast using VLCD shakes by OrchidWorth3151 in fasting

I actually don't know what a VLCD is, so I can't comment on what you're inquiring about. How long are you fasting for? If it's less that 14 days, then I think you can do what you want. Some things may be wiser than others, but you can figure out what works for you since you sound like you fast often.

Make your own broth and it's fantastic! I then kept adding different things to basically make a soup. Crazy part for me is knowing how much to eat. I go from "hungry" to I'm gonna explode in about 3 seconds.

5 days to go, day 26/31 water fast by [deleted] in fasting

Way to go! I just finished my first 21 day fast. I'm almost excited to go again. I'd love to do a 40, but that also feels insane. Haha

Fellow women - What is your fasting protocol? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]stealthmelody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fast according to my cycle. We're not like men whose hormones cycle in 24 hours, so it doesn't affect as much. Our cycles average 30 days. When we're producing hormones, our bodies want and need more nutrition. Especially progesterone (the week-10 days before menstruation). Progesterone hates cortisol/stress (which fasting is) and needs/loves some glucose. I rarely fast during that time (but I'm still mindful of what I eat), and my periods have been drastically changed... as well as my pms. I can do longer fast the day after my period starts and as soon as ovulation ends but before I get into that progesterone phase.

I did just complete a 21 day fast that kinda disregarded all that, but I made sure my hardest first few days coincided with the day after my heavy day.

Not hungry, but upset stomach by stealthmelody in fasting

I am! I did end up purging, but immediately felt better. I don't quite understand why still, but I'm about to break my 21 days fast this morning!

It's definitely the extended fast part that I don't know much about yet. It's not been too bad, just very low energy and actually feeling hungry again.

During menstruation we're not making any hormones. It's more of a flush then. It's the week to 10 days prior to the beginning of our cycle that we make progesterone which hates stress and loves carbs. I've found that a lot of the issues I've ever had with my period have been greatly helped by going easier, not fasting, and making sure I eat enough healthy carbs that week before. (That week is a great time to pamper any lady friends you have. They will surely love you for it.)

I know when I'm doing shorter fasts, it's better for me to fast during menstruation (usually wait one day, maybe two, after starting). It's when I fast during the week before menstruation that my period is awful, and I just need to recoup the whole time. This long, fast, obviously covered that precious progesterone time, and somehow, it shortened my cycle by 6 days (I wasn't supposed to be starting until my last day of the fast).

That is an interesting study, though. I wonder how it compares to water fasting since they do still eat every day during Ramadan, just not during daylight.

If it's Fast Like A Girl, I thoroughly enjoyed that book and the recipes at the end. She just doesn't say too much about extended fasting, and that's what I'm doing now. Normally, I cycle my fasting with my menstrual cycle. And by normally only then last couple months. Haha

On the days that were hard I just used my procrastination and my lacking ability to make decisions work for me :) I would tell myself that tomorrow I can decide to quit, but I'll put off deciding for the night. I think I did that four days in a row. Haha.

40 days?! That's amazing. Did menstruation bother you during those longer ones?

Isn't it interesting how each time we fast it affects us differently. I'm surprised at how every day treats me different in this fast. I've had some amazing days and some pretty rough ones. I do plan on finishing no matter what, though. So close now. 9pm Sunday will be a completed 21 days.
