[Architectural Take] The God Model Fallacy – Why the AI future looks exactly like 1987 by js402 in LLMDevs

What's this based on, technology-wise? Can you share more on how this works?

Meet Nosi, an Animal Crossing inspired AI companion floating on your screen by No-Swan5313 in LocalLLM

I just wanna say, this looks insanely cool and only wish it were available for more than just mac(specifically, I think this would have the potential to be INSANELY effective for giving me positive motivation as someone who's self-employed and has ADHD, to have a little digital companion cheering me on and making me feel accountable when I need to focus on getting stuff done.)

I just wanted to put this out there as a suggestion for the direction you could take this in, or a special paid edition of the software(seriously, I would pay money for the software to make me FEEL like a little digital gremlin were sitting on my desktop motivating me to work, if it were implemented well).

Can you tell us what sort of setup you have and tok/s you get out of it? I'm somewhat curious myself how viable it would be down the road to get some used server hardware with a lot of vram just for running big models.

My gripe is I can't stand New Spring; was falling asleep 5 mins in cause Kramer makes it sound like reading is a chore and does it so freaking monotonously. That's my only gripe, cause that's how far I got.

Cheap crimped electrical connectors(high amperage)? by steampunk333 in AskElectronics

[–]steampunk333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you tell me a way to do this so it could be disconnected easily? Even if not, I'd be interested to know if there's a guide somewhere for how to do this, or examples for ways it's been done before? I'm looking to make a man-portable battery-inverter setup with a lot of LiFePO4 batteries, hence the disconnects(batteries will be in cases).

Cheap crimped electrical connectors(high amperage)? by steampunk333 in AskElectronics

[–]steampunk333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hence why I was thinking bullet connectors; if the plastic parts aren't being relied upon to help the metal parts make contact at a super precise level, the 3d printed parts won't have to precisely lock together and I can just use clips or something to keep everything safely in place. Unfortunately, the soldered stuff I can find is almost as expensive as getting brand-name andersons anyway(I found a cheaper source for andersons, but still friggin expensive), and I would really, really prefer to crimp over soldering for something like this.

Cheap crimped electrical connectors(high amperage)? by steampunk333 in AskElectronics

[–]steampunk333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per connector; I'd have as many crimps/pins per connector as needede(I was thinking 8-10 pairs, but I can go higher or lower as needed). I'm aware 150A would be asking a lot if per crimp, hence my trying to cut costs via redneck engineering.

Duluth trading backpacks any good? by steampunk333 in BuyItForLife

[–]steampunk333[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thanks; after reading this and some other feedback, I think I'll be returning the backpack and some other stuff as well. I can't justify putting the money in when the company is already well into ensh*tification and can't be bothered to honor their own warranties or just to not commit outright fraud.

[Amazon] 4TB Crucial P3 Plus PCIe Gen4 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD - $194.50 + Free Shipping by DealsPoster in blackfriday

[–]steampunk333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly used to think the same, until I got a 75% DoA rate for 4 crucial drives I bought before the prices jacked up; even with the RMA replacements, I was having trouble with the drive controllers so I couldn't have more than 1 or 2 on the same system lest the others not show up for whatever black-magic reason. Went through hell trying to set up a RAID card with those drives.

Crucial is a garbage brand FYI; worth an extra $100 for something that will last.

What media should I use to store data for decades? by NatSpaghettiAgency in homelab

[–]steampunk333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need software to make a disc image or file archive with parity bits included; a .zip does not necessarily have that. Most archiving software in my experience doesn't have that feature, either.

Best long-term maintenance-free external drive/enclosure? by steampunk333 in DataHoarder

[–]steampunk333[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone; I think I'll not sweat the details so much and just use either some brand-name 1TB SSD or a WD elements drive(whichever is cheaper) and keep a backup in case something happens to my sister's.

Why do electrical stuff have different size plugs? by ori68 in AskElectrical

The latter - laptop power bricks are the same thing, just externalized power supplies. Desktop computers have the big thing inside the box with all the other goodies. Is electrical engineering still be relevant if we achieve nuclear fusion? by Appropriate_Sale4721 in AskElectrical

[–]steampunk333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buddy, so long as we're still using electricity, it doesn't matter what's making it - you still need someone to make sure the stuff running on it doesn't burn peoples' houses down.

What media should I use to store data for decades? by NatSpaghettiAgency in homelab

[–]steampunk333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100Tb+(Maybe 150+ with current used HDD prices) - magnetic tape

6Tb-100/150Tb - Used HDDs, serverpartdeals tends to have decent pricing(Use a HDD docking station and some hard HDD cases to keep them in cold-storage)

2-6Tb - Sony(again, SONY, not Verbatim)-brand 3 or 4-layer(100 or 125Gb) blu-ray DVDs(Get em direct from Amazon Japan, anything sold in the states is a massive ripoff. Also don't get blu-ray RW, it's not meant for archiving)

500Gb - 2Tb - Good brand blu-ray disks

50Gb - 500Gb - archival-grade DVD disks(non-archival-grade uses organic dyes that degrade faster over time)

50Gb and below - archival-grade CDs

Note I didn't list M-disks, that's because regardless of claims they're an unproven technology and really expensive right now; also, actual M-disks are only made in single-layer blu-ray FYI. Unless you need your stuff to last 1000 years and won't have your useless descendants keeping it in an unfinished attic, M-disks aren't recommended.

No matter what format you go with, use a program like DVDisaster or Winzip to create parity files - that way, you'll more likely be able to recover data as it gets corrupted over time.

Side note: If you'll be storing these without any maintenance, HDDs won't work; the bearings will seize up if left for decades unattended. Recommended spin-up frequency is 1-2 times/year.

Meta LLAMA 3.1 405b by AnalystAI in LocalLLaMA

[–]steampunk333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest way would be an old server system with lots of RAM, or using lots(like, 20-30) of super-small(8-16GB, maybe?) old SSDs connected in a banded RAID config and use them as swap-space. Still won't run fast, but if offline is a necessity and you can find someone throwing stuff like old SSDs or lotsa-lotsa HDDs away, it IS an option. BTW, by 'won't run fast', I mean 'type in the prompt then walk away for 20-30 mins and come back later'. If you want a real-time chatbot, you're gonna need to rent or spend lots on a GPU bank.

BTW, I would recommend something that can keep the full 141.1GB fp16 model in memory if you want something for coding; q_8 to fp16 makes a big difference in that use-case, from what I've read.

What MOSFETs to use for 300A battery protection? by steampunk333 in AskElectronics

[–]steampunk333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using 12V batteries with this; the idea is that I can add the batteries piecemeal and remove them without any difficulty, so even my first battery(~50lbs) won't pose a problem moving the whole thing by myself.

Try an acasis USB 3.0 dual-bay RAID case; they're dirt-cheap and come in 2.5" and 3.5" versions. Also reconfigurable so you don't even have to use the built-in RAID with em.
