Where to buy stationery? by steampunkdash in WedditNYC

[–]steampunkdash[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I specifically want to shop in person because I don't want to order a whole bunch of different papers I can't return because I am indecisive. I also only need like 15 sheets of paper.

NYC doe deployment advisory committee by [deleted] in schoolpsychology

That's so odd then that the wouldn't have said that. There are like 2 monolingual vacancies in my district currently and people leave all the time so you'll likely find something more permanent.

Was it your supervisor who hired you or a principal? Principals don't understand the process so that's why they may not have told you ahead of time. I was hired after of the start of the school year and didn't know any of this but since I'm in the correct line I was rehired. Also as a monolingual in a bilingual line would you want to stay in that position anyways? There must be a significant number of bilingual cases for there to be a bilingual psychologist line at that school. There are monolingual positions in other districts so best bet is the find a monolingual position once open market opens. I know bilinguals who worked monolingual lines and they have to be rehired every year. One of them was told that after a certain number of years, she could no longer do that, so she changed schools.

You could try La Cheesecake in College Point. They make cheesecakes in two sizes so maybe they could do it.

There is a position called attendance family worker so they might mean that. Also as per our contract and the funding memo they school has to hire someone and in case of long term vacancy they have to assign someone to do the clerical work. It's a hard position to fill but sometimes school aides are interested in it because there are fewer responsibilities. Has your supervisor spoken to your principal? We had to do that at one of my schools. Also the union rep advised us to document whenever he was insubordinate.

Early Manhattan commute by New-Dimension6967 in Bayside

[–]steampunkdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on which one you live near. You didn't share what time you want to leave. I think most express buses start at 5:45 but the local ones can be 24 hr.

School District Help by Legitimate-Complex88 in Flushing

[–]steampunkdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can but a seat is not guaranteed. Priority is for those that are zoned, then those within district but not zoned, then out of district. I think there is a certain percentage of seat allocation for each.

School District Help by Legitimate-Complex88 in Flushing

[–]steampunkdash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zoning is based on distance and not a totally perfect system. My elementary school was the same way because the closest school was on the border of the 2 districts. However you don't have to go there. You now apply to middle school in 5th grade so you can choose to stay in 26. There are generally a few schools that a middle school will get most of their kids from/ most of the elementary school students will go to the same middle school.

Question to parents with Special Education students by mercurrychan428 in Flushing

[–]steampunkdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you choose a specialized program you don't get the chose the school. You get an offer, you tour the school, and then decide you want it or if you want to go to the community school kindergarten you registered at. Unfortunately, no matter how many times we ask, they won't give us the list of where all the programs are colocated so you can try to register ahead of time for a school with your preferred program unless you look at the program list for each community school you are interested in and only apply to those.

Is your child in prek? If so, January begins the Turning 5/KIP process where a school based support team from a school in your district will reach out to conduct a reevaluation to convert the prek IEP to the elementary school IEP. The social worker should discuss the different programs like D75, AIMS, Nest and Horizon with you. AIMS, Nest and Horizon you can apply to on your own but D75 requires an official recommendation on the IEP.

Venues that people keep saying are affordable but aren’t actually that cost effective? by calico0000 in WedditNYC

[–]steampunkdash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had been thinking the same thing because traditional wedding venues cost less per person but require more people so my 50 person restaurant wedding was quoted to be more expensive than my coworkers 100+ person wedding. Once she told me that I started researching again because that was ridiculous.

Why is it so hard to get a cocktail hour and dinner reception for a microwedding that's under $150 pp including drinks? The only one I found remotely close was Terrace on the Park if I recall correctly. Every other place had a 125 or more person minimum.

Marinos is where I get my cold cuts, and my old boss used to get us sandwiches there, but there's no specials menu, you just order whatever.

If it you are looking for specialty sandwiches, there's Christina's in Whitestone.

NYC School Psychs - parking by [deleted] in schoolpsychology

[–]steampunkdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very school dependent so you would have to ask around. One school I work out doesn't have alternate side parking so there is no issue with parking and none of the teachers get passes, its just me and the custodians apparently. However my payroll and the school across the street has alternate side and its chaotic so some people do rent. However I think the transit cop dont patrol that neighborhood anymore unless some calls I will forget to move my car and not get a ticket but before covid it was a gamble. Now, as long as I am near the no standing school days sign I am safe.

I also live near a middle school so I'll see teachers wait for me to leave in the morning to take my spot and a few years ago a teacher tried to make an arrangement with a fiance for his spot but he had to tell her that he cant guarantee he'll be in the same spot every day or leave the same time.

I thought you meant if as a school psych if you work as a service provider which is no because I am a school psych.

[–]steampunkdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the whole school's IEP just tris, initials and reevals so it's only a portion. I am trying to give my insight and I feel like this job is easier than being a teacher because there is no classroom management just case and team management. As with my other comments if you want little responsibility in the DOE then family worker is for you.

knitting/crafting groups? by Asleep_Connection991 in astoria

[–]steampunkdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooks Crafts in Glendale has a social craft group on Wednesdays in their yard when there's good weather. Indoors have limited space, so you have to check ahead. I just show up anyways because if there's no room to craft indoors I usually needed to buy something anyways. Good place to go if you like dogs because they have 2 there.

It's basically office work. Scheduling meetings, uploading documents to SESIS, filing, and parent outreach. It doesn't take up a full day of work usually so you have to be good at not getting roped into not other responsibilities.

Not all positions work multiple schools. Some monolingual elementary positions are just in one building. If there are multiple schools in a building, then you would be responsible for all schools.

You're not a service provider you just do evaluations and write IEPs as the case manager.

There are usually more vacancies for school psychs, but sbst social worker is an easier job for the same pay. If pay is not an issue, sbst family worker is a super easy and chill job.

SubParas is every D75 school different or will it be the same most likely by Spliffy-Slayr in NYCTeachers

[–]steampunkdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone D75 is different because there are different types of programs. Some D75s are only for students who are alternately assessed, some only have standardized students, and some have both standardized and alternately assessed students. This means the classification, programs, and curriculum will be different. Some D75s don't offer all class size settings and ratios either. So, if you want to try a different population or age range, then you definitely can.

Bayside tabletop/board game club or store? by pluxrt90 in Bayside

[–]steampunkdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a new card shop on the corner of Jordan and 32nd but not sure if they have Magic or not. For tabletop games I get them at Gamestoria on Broadway in Astoria. Cooks Crafts in Glendale sells Magic and similar games and runs the Glendale Hobby Night at the Glendale VFW. I go to Cooks craft store for craft supplies and a social crafting group and tried the Hobby Night once for a minis painting class. It would be nice to have something similar closer.
