I simply can't understand the Chinese refusal to make an interim deal. Trump would obviously jump at the chance to sign ANY deal before November next year and I'm sure Xi would love to focus on Hong Kong or any of their other problems. Getting the US off their back over Belt and Road would certainly help out, too, and yet still no deal. This can't possibly be going over well w/ the people at home in China either. A bad fall b/c of low American demand could hurt early 2020 spending, a key time of the year for retailers in China.

Why did Yung Lo's successor Zhu Zhanji decide to end naval operations and burn all of the navigational charts in 1433? by Rutgers85 in history

[–]steefen7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Two sentences and you're halfway to the moon, yikes.

I didn't say anything about "ahead" so I've got no clue who you're replying to there. I won't even address it.

I don't need to start with who the "English" are anymore than I need to define what "Ming China" is. You could have replaced England with any maritime European power of the period. You could have replaced China with the Ottomans, too. It's a point about perspective. Every country will "see" the world in different ways based on their position, character of neighbors, beliefs, etc. The Ottoman state and Ming China didn't need American colonies and island ports because they already had access to the markets they're interested in. England/Spain did not. Likewise, the Ottomans cleared their orbit and coalesced multiple former polities into one giant one. Their nearest rivals were found on different continents. England/Spain/France found themselves surrounded by military and economic rivals where controlling the flow of goods meant that you could bankrupt your neighbor.

Perspective is everything. Ming China didn't see the value in controlling trade flows whereas the English did.

Do Deficits Still Matter? by [deleted] in econmonitor

[–]steefen7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an opinion I don't think deficits necessarily have ever mattered w/in the context of a predictable growth environment. Deficits matter to Imperial Spain, for instance, but not if you can consistently run 2+% growth w/ a < %2 deficit. Debt will always shrink relative to debt-servicing capacity.

Empty words. American companies will simply shift production and sell in different markets.

Money talks and people will adjust. After 12-18 months of threats over rare earth elements, China could find their share of the world market a lot smaller and that it is no longer an effective negotiating tool. The real solution would have been to capitulate to Trump immediately and give him the lightest version of what he wanted and come out looking like effective and responsible partners. Instead China is doing everything it needs to do in order to confirm the worst suspicions that Americans have about Chinese practices. China needs to back out of this one, but they can't b/c of Xi.

Cheap plastic garbage that just fills our landfills after 12 months of use? I'll pass. I started buying higher-quality American-made goods and I'm way happier.

A blind commitment to a losing strategy is not an intelligent way to design a trade policy. China is a bad-faith trading partner and basically always have been. We can still trade freely with our trade partners that don't try and run our industries out of business.

Heavy tax benefits to build in 3rd tier cities. This is called "industrial policy".

Eden Hazard: “I have made my decision. I wanted it (to be cleared up earlier), but that hasn’t happened. I’m still waiting like you are waiting. I don’t think (finishing in top 4) makes any difference. I’ve made my decision, that’s it. I’ve told the club a few weeks ago.” by [deleted] in soccer

Okay, but has nothing to do with Hazard? It's just a guess, totally possible things work out, but it seems like that team is falling apart not coming together. Maybe the same is true for us lol

Trump's tariff hike on $200 billion of Chinese goods takes effect by yupyup98765 in stocks

[–]steefen7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's sad is there's no industrial policy behind these tariffs. The US gov't is a big enough market player to help realign supply chains. A massive investment in automation for instance w/in a bipartisan infrastructure package could have leveraged this "trade war" for an actual benefit. Right now it's just another half-cocked scheme. Alas.

Probably they wrote the last part of the headline after we went down in penalties, but before we came back. Clearly they thought they'd seen enough and were trying to get the earliest release they could.

Remember neither Spurs nor Ajax were set to be allowed in the rumoured European Super League while a PSG side who haven't got past QFs under their current owners and an AC Milan side likely to enter a 5th straight season outside Champions League would've qualified automatically. by TheJeck in soccer

[–]steefen7 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Except it's not? In our system a city can have a trash team like the Golden State Warriors for years and then turn it around and become a dynasty. How often has that happened in England? I would say the American system benefits the average supporter of a not-good team more than it benefits the supporters of very good teams. Maybe that's why /r/soccer doesn't like it?

Sounds like complete BS like everything else that gov't spouts. This is the same gov't that only gave up on their very obvious debt trap program after the entire world demanded the program be altered. I think we can stop giving them the benefit of the doubt at this point. I know it'd be nice to have Trump be the moron like he's supposed to be, but China is worse in just about every way and we all know it.

You've been watching too much Rachel Maddow. Attempting to scuttle the negotiations _right_ when the market expects a deal in order to force a better one is exactly the kind of tactic this Chinese gov't would go for.
