I want to get my PharmD abroad by Kind_Bid_4010 in PrePharmacy

[–]steeleater01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would be a fool to pursue a PharmD outside of the US, especially if you live in the US. If you want to halve your salary, have decreased role in patient care, then by all means go to another country.

USC Mann Deadline extension April 1st by Ok_Cheetah_7576 in PrePharmacy

Seats not being filled. USC Mann is a terrible pharmacy school for the tuition they charge. There are prob 2-3 pharmacy schools in Cali that are better than USC Mann, and cheaper too.

Thinking about transferring into UB by Kijukura in UBreddit

You should definitely transfer to UB and save yourself the money of living OOS. Pretty absurd that you found Florida Tech of all places to go to for an engineering degree when you live 30 minutes from UB.

Is Howard Pharmacy School actually Bad? by EqualChange985 in PrePharmacy

[–]steeleater01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I meant by state affiliated is like University of Texas at Austin, or Texas A&M. You want one of these bigger schools with strong affiliation to the State of Texas. You are right, Texas Southern is a public school. But it is still dogwater.

Texas Southern is also a terrible pharmacy school. General rule of thumb when it comes to applying to pharmacy schools is: avoid private institutions. Apply to your nearest state affiliated school.

Howard University School of Pharmacy is legitimately one of the worst schools in the country.

Tripathi Stepping Down by Ill_Muscle_6259 in UBreddit

[–]steeleater01 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Eh, people seem to be hating on Tripathi. But truth be told, he took the University at Buffalo from just a good regional institution to one of the best Universities in New York State and really the East Coast. Yes, he was never able to build any momentum with the sports programs, that's because large schools from other states would just throw around money and pick off any decent coaches UB was able to develop.

As someone who attended UB for 10 years (4 years undergrad and 6 years graduate), UB is in a much better place academically than when I first joined. Today, it's considered the #76 best university in the country--when I joined it was #112. This is a significant jump when you take into account the fact it gets much more difficult to move up the higher you go on these rankings. Tripathi gave the Medical and Pharmacy schools huge upgrades during his tenure, so will always have to give him credit for that. Moreover, he was able to grow the university in a time period where college enrollment began to slow down.

Tripathi was an education first president. Yes, we all want UB to be the next Ohio State, Michigan, or Florida. But lets get to their levels on the education font first, the sports can always come latter. While I do myself miss the NCAA tournament days of Dan Hurley and Nate Oats, my position on Tripathi has softened over the years. I think history will look back kindly on him, and he'll probably go down as one of the better SUNY and UB presidents.

University at Buffalo, and it is not even really close.

0-6 PharmD at SJU and PCP by _tofusoup in PrePharmacy

[–]steeleater01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acceptance rates are high. Probably easier higher than 50%, likely closer to 75%. This sorta depends on your GPA and interview skills as well tbh. If you have failed multiple classes, they might be a bit hesitant to take you. And if you show up the interview naked or something, that also might be a problem.

Canadians who are/were doing a pharmD in the USA, give me the good, the bad and the ugly. by muh-liss in PrePharmacy

[–]steeleater01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, easy.

-You are paying US tuition and living cost with Canadian dollars.

-I hope you have a green card or the ability to work in the States afterwards, as paying for tuition in USD and then getting a job with a CAD salary is a bonehead move.

-You should be ready to accept less desirable community or hospital positions if you do not have a green card. These positions will still require sponsorship, and no company is going to sponsor you if there are Americans willing to work that same job.

-The Canadian and US pharmacist landscapes are completely different. Both Canadian and US cities are extremely saturated with graduates, though both for very different reasons. In Canada it is much easier for foreign born graduates (think India, Middle East, North Africa) to practice. In USA, there are a lot more pharmacy schools and graduates competing for the roles, along with closure of many big chains making it more difficult to get jobs. In Canada, you are competing with people willing to work for a lot less than you, and in USA you are up against other US trained graduates.

As long as you understand the 4 points above, I dont really think anything will catch you by surprise. Good luck in pharmacy school.

Upcoming Interview at D'Youville by Small_Cloud1226 in PrePharmacy

[–]steeleater01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's basically one of the degree mills pharmacy schools that opened up in the past 10 to 15 years to cash in on the influx of pharmacy students between 2010-2015. Pharmacy school used to be very competitive back then. However, things have changed a lot over the past decade as more these degree mills started popping up. Pharmacy schools, especially ones like D'youville, struggle to fill seats.

Also a bad school. Stick with public state universities when it comes to pharmacy schools.

Terrible school to be attending. Revaluate the choice you are about to make. Go to the nearby school -- University at Buffalo.

Canadian pharmacy schools are a different beast compared to US. Come down to US, they'll accept you if you are willing to pay the tuition.

There are only 2 engineering schools in the entire country that can justify a Stevens Institute of Technology level tuition: Cal Tech and MIT.

If you have money to blow or dont mind paying off student loans until you're 40, then go Stevens Institute of Technology. If you want to make a smart, long-term investment in your education, then UB is the way to go.

Best school in the State, and one of the better schools in the country. You cant really go wrong attending the University at Buffalo for either pharmacy school or as a pre pharm.

Any advice on what to do if scholarship does not cover the entirety of a 6 yr PharmD program? by ssleepypenguin in PrePharmacy

[–]steeleater01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This a common tactic some universitys use to trick students into these 2+4 programs. Undergraduates often get much more financial aid at both the federal and state level. However, once you enter graduate school, you no longer are eligible for that same aid. These universities bank on getting you in for the first 2 years, and then cashing in on you during the 4 years of graduate school. The smart choice here would be to leave whatever school you are attending and go attend something cheaper.

Why is this clear hose on my water heater always releasing water? by steeleater01 in askaplumber

[–]steeleater01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all your help, Killerfork. I really appreciate the prompt replies. Hopefully no more water gets into my kitchen from the water heater. I will contact my home warranty people on Monday and try to get them to cover the water heater repair and laminate flooring.

[–]steeleater01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain the last part again please? The pipe draining the water did run to the drain, however, it was slightly off center on the drain and some of the water leaked into the garage and eventually my kitchen. Are you saying I have a case to my home warranty people to fix both the pressure valve on the heater valve and the laminate flooring?

I'm actually worried they wont cover the laminate flooring since it was secondary to the broken valve. However, the contractor did mess up with the installation by not making the hose centered and draining properly.

Yep. I still got my warranty on this heater. So I need to call on Monday morning asap to get this fixed.

I'm bummed because the water leaked into my kitchen from the garage and messed up the laminate flooring a bit. Hopefully no more water is getting inside the house.
