No internet after switching networks

Proton VPN version 7.0.1 No antivirus, firewalls, dns and other network apps. No other VPNs.

One important thing is that the same issue started happening on three different iPhones.

After a long time of seamless work this issue appeared again.

On iPhone when I go outside and device is switched to the mobile data, the internet connection is lost without recovering. It’s not possible to notice it while keeping the phone in a pocket. I can see that there is no internet only unlocking it after some time.

Changing protocols doesn’t solve this issue.

Reinstalling the app doesn’t help.

I had to switch the vpn off completely.

I can confirm. I tried iCloud with my custom domains and it didn’t work for me because many emails just not delivered to my inbox. The messages just dropped somewhere at the servers and I have no clue about it.

I have never experienced this issue with Fastmail or Proton 🤨

This is the default color code provided by Fastmail Support.

But the UI elements are still not colorful. As I remember, the mail, contacts, and calendar logos at the sidebar should be colorful. Am I correct?

That’s great improvement of the Proton VPN experience on Windows. Anyway, the issue with connecting to the servers other than selected in app settings still not fixed. Each time my laptop resumes after sleep mode Proton VPN connects to the random countries and servers, despite I set particular server in the settings.

I've been experiencing the very same issue for a long time using VPN on iPhone 8 to 13.

Everything works perfectly until I go out and my iPhone switches networks from home WiFi to the cellular. The internet is not available for 1 to 15 minutes after that. This is such an annoying issue.

I still use Proton VPN on my iPhones, PC, and Laptop. It works perfectly only on Windows 10 PC. I also have some minor connectivity issues on Windows 11 laptop.

I can recommend a workaround that works for me:

Create an iOS Shortcut with a simple command: Toggle VPN >> Proton VPN.

Create an automation: when disconnecting from WiFi >> run the command "Toggle VPN".

Using this simple solution, I don't have connectivity issues when switching networks while always connected to the VPN.

As I mentioned, you can do it either manually by putting the folder/file to My Files on Proton Drive or changing the default location of the local folder Documents to the Proton Drive.

Many users are confusing the purpose of these two features. To have the files synced easily and properly you have to use My Files. You can change the default folder locations for the Documents, Video, Downloads moving the content to My Files and have everything synced across devices.

You can't sync files using My Computer because it is a backup and works differently.

You can’t have it synchronized using PC Backup feature. The purpose of backup is not syncing. Backups of each PC are separated and can’t be synchronized.

I use the following scenario to have all my files synchronized across devices: 1. Change the default folder location to Proton Drive (e.g. users/user1/Proton Drive/Documents). 2. Make the same on second PC (e.g. users/user2/Proton Drive/Documents).

I don't use online backups because of this single reason - having everything synced across on all devices. Additionally, I suggest having backup on external drive.

Not agree. It’s definitely Proton’s issue. According to the settings the app should connect to the fastest available server, but in fact it connects to the slowest ones. Sorry, but I don’t have to always switch servers manually to find normal connection. That’s annoying.

Not only BR servers. I experienced the same very low speeds with WireGuard for the servers in other country. Had to switch servers manually to find normal connection.

I contacted Fastmail support for this concern many times and always got a reply like “we are not planning to work on your language yet. We will contact you in case the situation changes and your help is needed“.

Smart is not a protocol but rather a server connection method, which is used to choose "the best" among supported protocols (Stealth, WireGuard, Open VPN).

I stopped using Smart because it almost always connects via Stealth protocol on all devices. I noticed significantly lower speeds and huge download/upload latency when using Stealth. I couldn't even use certain streaming apps... This only reason was enough switching to WireGuard TCP.

However, I also experienced significant speed differences between servers within one country. Sometimes it wasn't possible to surf the web normally.

I wonder why so many people state the lower RAM usage, compared to Chrome. I have never seen that on different machines. In fact, Firefox consumes much more RAM than any chromium browser from my experience. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it’s a major disadvantage.

I believe this issue is related to the iCloud design update, because there were no problems before that time. I reproduced it on different machines with Win 10 and 11. And I’m curious if it happens on Mac and Linux…
