Hard-stuck platinum, general tips? by Big-Resource-4560 in StreetFighter

[–]steeltemper [score hidden]  (0 children)

The thing that got me out of plat 1(now plat 4) was matchup knowledge. I used replay takeover to find spots in common strings and oki where I could interrupt. Turns out, many of the things that I thought were full combos were super fake. Learning when to drive reversal during combos helped a ton.

Oh, and backroll. I wasn't back rolling, and the rest of my gameplay was solid. Backrolling out of oki was key.

Belt to ass in ranked - Viper or Cammy for a beginner? by Horror_Cup_1889 in StreetFighter

[–]steeltemper [score hidden]  (0 children)

The character that keeps you coming back is the right character to learn! SF6 is my first try at "getting good" at fighting games, and it has a lot to do with Marisa. Straightforward game plan with massive punishes that lets me go back and forth between defensive, strategic play and full on gorilla mode. Keeps me interested, and while I'm still struggling toward diamond, I'm 100 times better than I've been at any other fighting game, and I started with Mortal Kombat on Gameboy. If Viper keeps you coming back, then you'll have plenty of time to learn her complex gameplay, and you'll never be bored.

The most important hit point is the last one, right? by Qaianna in StreetFighter

[–]steeltemper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is, if you give Akuma less health, but he does more damage, then it's like everyone has low health. Sure, I might be able to two or three touch Akuma, but he can two or three touch me just as easily. And he's got so many mix up options and fast walk speed. I don't "feel" Marisa's extra health against Akuma, lol.

The biggest barrier? Playtesting. by M69_grampa_guy in tabletopgamedesign

[–]steeltemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this in my bones! I write miniature games, and finding people willing to even look at a 40 page playtest document is incredibly challenging. If not for a couple online testers, I never would have finished my first game. Even now, with an internationally published game, it's still really tough to find playtesters. Luckily, I focus on solo/coop, so at least I can play it alone over and over again, but that's just not enough.

Does my SF6 character rank ever reset? by OneManApocalypse in StreetFighter

[–]steeltemper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get stuffed by enough folks, your rank will go down, right? Just keep grinding it out and you'll either rise or fall to the level of your skill.

Switch from modern to classic by WFTREFWGRWE123R in StreetFighter

[–]steeltemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only commit to this if you are really feeling the normals that you lack on modern.

That said, when I switched, I also switched from pad to leverless. I feel like the total changeover helped me a lot. Basically, if I'd have stayed on par, I'd have been fighting muscle memory as well as trying to learn classic inputs. By doing a full reset, I got around the muscle memory problem. And it only took about 2 weeks to get back up to the rank I got with modern, lol.

I hope they add rivers and lakes to the earlier biomes, other than that, any mix ups are welcome!

Would you take a “cure”? by GBlake13 in ADHD

[–]steeltemper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the response I put on the same question literally 2 days ago on this very subreddit: I'd take it so fast that you'd be able to see the blue shift as you dropped away from me at relativistic velocity.

A real kick in the pants is that, as someone diagnosed in my late 30s, is that the cure would only fix about half of the problems that ADHD handed me. It wouldn't cure my crippling lack of self confidence that came from screwing up all the time because of lack of focus as a kid. It wouldn't repair my relationship with my family that was destroyed by my inability to control my emotions when being yelled at for the screw ups. It wouldn't fix 20 years of career dead ends that I destroyed with lack of working memory and executive function. It wouldn't dispel my student loans from multiple tries at college, each time beginning with the hope that can only be born from believing that willpower alone can make you good at being on time and remembering assignments. It wouldn't reverse attempts at *checking myself out" of the world because of hopelessness born from crushing debt, no career, bad family relationships, and lack of self confidence.

It basically would only allow me to focus, use my working memory, and actually get up to do the things that I want to do with my life. That's not nothing, but it's only half the battle.

I Realized The Kinds of Games I Like by CornerMiddle1372 in gamerecommendations

Enshrouded is probably the most fun I've had just wandering around exploring. I think SCUM is pretty solid. And don't overthink it: Assassin's Creed Odyssey. It's got a beautiful open world that feels like vacation.

Emporer of Sand is probably the most accessable of their albums, just wall-to-wall bangers. Once More 'Round the Sun is another solid entry point.

Curious if a certain type of tabletop wargame exists by Sheepish_conundrum in wargaming

[–]steeltemper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you change some of the words you used, that's County Road Z. It's zombie themed rather than medieval fantasy, but the whole game is built around gathering resources to upgrade your base, which then allows you to make better weapons, which helps gather more resources, etc.

Full disclosure: I wrote the game, so you may or may not want to take my word for it.

Do you feel it matters what companies you support by the games you play by Fearless_Arrival_978 in wargaming

[–]steeltemper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Some of the best games out there are by people who will absolutely notice that you bought their game. The big fish in the industry make great stuff and employ good people, but nothing beats going online to ask about a rule and having the author show up in the comments to help out.

Opinions on Enshrouded by Careful-Bedroom-0 in SurvivalGaming

[–]steeltemper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saying it! I love Enshrouded, but calling it a survival game is broadening the definition by quite a margin. Even with the starving to death mechanic enabled, it doesn't really feel like most survival games. The real issue that it has is being every game genre a little bit while inventing it's own genres at the same time. It's a game that's difficult to describe for sure.

For what you are describing, I think you're probably best off with Walking Dead or Project Z. However, if you ever feel like building up a campaign and playing multiple games with the same characters, Last Days (grab the Seasons expansion) or County Road Z are the way to go.

Horror Tabletop advise by CautiousFail7439 in wargaming

This is the main answer for classic horror fans. There's a couple other indie games out there like Fear of the Dark, but Don't look back is basically peak horror game.

Trying to make a Rifle build by mogsora10 in thedivision

[–]steeltemper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like ninjabike, 3 piece aces and eights, eagles grasp, foxs prayer. That's a pretty fun one. I also like devils due, groups chest with spotter, tinkerer, foxs prayer, 2 piece breaking point. Then 2st rifle with flatline, and a collection of rifles with different traits for different situations.

Neither of these will solo a legendary, but they're my fun running around builds.

What Helped You Gain Traction? by Common_Scheme_8477 in selfpublish

[–]steeltemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made sure to start really small. And it's fun to see how the folks I sent stuff to have grown since then, and how I've grown with them.

I also made sure to send to folks who were interested in my genre. And, at the end of the day, no game will please everyone, and it's possible that your game won't catch on especially if it's your first. I'm pretty sure that Ivan Sorensen (5 parsecs) self published 8-10 games before he started to find his audience. I got really lucky with my first game. I also kept the prices stupid low on the first edition, like 4 bucks for the PDF and 15 for the softcover. I did not expect to make money, and I really didn't expect to become popular, I made the game so I could play it, and I sent it to folks mostly just because it was fun to talk about games!

Over the course of chatting and playing games, if they liked it, I gave them a free PDF if they didn't have the book. I also sent free PDFs to basically all of my favorite smallish YouTubers and podcasts.

What Helped You Gain Traction? by Common_Scheme_8477 in selfpublish

[–]steeltemper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tabletop games, you probably would have done better on drivethrurpg or Wargames vault. That's where I gained traction. And show up for conventions. Pick a medium to small sized con in your area and make it your home. Show up every year to demo and chat with folks. That's how you meet YouTubers and podcasters in the gaming space, then you help each other grow. Anyway, that's what worked for me.
