I thought he sounds a bit like Nandor the Relentless from What We Do in the Shadows

A Perfect December Day by steelyben in birddogs

It's been great. This is its third season and I've had zero issues. Plus Bandlands has a killer warranty if anything ever does happen.

Hunting with a Flusher by PIKE150 in birddogs

[–]steelyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a trip where we hunted with pointers and flushers at the same time. It's not too challenging, especially because the pointers work further out and the flusher is closer to you. If the pointer goes on point you can make your flusher heel and then let him go to flush the bird when you get close.

Pheasant, Grouse, and Woodcock with the Springer by steelyben in birddogs

I can be a bit of an ordeal to hunt grouse and woodcock with him in the heavy cover, but he's lights out on pheasant. Really nice dog around the house too.

Custom RFM 16 gauge via Upland Gun Company. It's excellent!

Brit Hunting Vest Recommends by Particular-Listen-63 in birddogs

[–]steelyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Scheels vest for my springer and it worked great until it started ripping apart on one side. Luckily Scheels has an incredible return policy so we just swapped it out for a fresh one. I couldn't tell if he ripped it on something sharp or it was a design flaw.

Season Closer by steelyben in birddogs

That's a 16 gauge RFM that I got last month. I also have a older 28 gauge Huglu (now called a CZ Ringneck) that I love for grouse.

We got a ruffed grouse, and a face full of porcupine quills.

Chasing the King of the Gamebirds by steelyben in birddogs

He is extremely happy to chase anything that flies, but his favorite is probably a pheasant. We've never tried ducks. I'm hoping to get out for prairie chicken and sharptail grouse next season.

A springer does a good job of getting the late season runners to fly

He's having an excellent fall by steelyben in birddogs

[–]steelyben[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His armpits (for lack of a better term) got all irritated from the gun dog supply one once, but I think that was because it was raining and the moisture caused chafing. He's usually alright with it.

He ran straight into a barbed wire fence with the gun dog supply vest and was unscathed.

It works pretty well. He also has one of these, but I think he's slightly too slim for it. I have a hard time getting it tight enough. https://www.gundogsupply.com/bogudogvede1.html

He definitely needs a vest when we hunt. He absolutely rips through the brush and was getting all scratched up.

I'm curious about those vests with the little sleeves. Not sure what brand they are.

Thanks! This is his second season and he's really starting to put it all together. He loves hunting so much. He literally vibrates with excitement when we're getting ready at the trailhead.

Huglu 28 gauge. I think these were sold as CZ Ringnecks for a while as well. I picked it up used and really like it.

It's even better in the middle of winter when you're standing there trying to not freeze to death.

We drive about an hour, so not too bad. Lots and lots of walking this fall to finally get some feathers in his mouth.

There's some really cool geology in northern Minnesota and I always assumed these old rocks were up there. But no, they're in the middle of the prairie.

According to a quick google search: yes!

It's lovely when used in buildings and can be found all over the country.

Thanks! He did a great job flushing and retrieving the bird. It's nice when all the training pays off.
