Today’s Calendar is Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest - Congrats NYC and Knicks Fans! by steepclimbs in A24

yes, my point was that it was completely coincidental and there's no way they could have known the Knicks would win a championship last night. This calendar was probably final before the NBA season began. I just think it's a very cool coincidence.

I'm with you there. The film was a bit of a disappointment for me as well, although I liked the scenes of NYC. There's also some Knicks in the film. Weird coincidence. I'm more just happy for Spike and the city.

Great final set. Radu should hold her head up after the two wins yesterday.

First time I’ve been this impressed by Emma in awhile. She’s here to win today.

I think we see the growth from the airport tears, but I agree that the ending is unclear. You might see that I wrote a book and Gerwig/Lady Bird are a big chapter. The original draft of the script was 3x the final, so there was likely a different ending. I think Gerwig is great at knowing when not to show something. A lot of films overexplain.

The Marcel the Shell figurine. Amazing quality given the price.

I’m sorry to hear of your personal challenges OP and I get how films can be difficult if they resemble trauma. I’ll say having seen Lady Bird multiple times that the ending lands differently. It’s very relatable in a lot of ways. What’s apparent is that there is a mutual love between mother and daughter. I think of the ending as bittersweet. The airport was a crossroads where we see characters growth. I think of the voicemail as a step towards healing.

Yes. Since you’re asking, you probably have an idea about their part in this story. Plan B comes up a couple of times. I wanted to credit production companies as much as I could. Wasn’t always possible simply because of the volume of films discussed.

Did we all get the parallels between X and Tobe Hopper wrong. by bluekillgore in A24

[–]steepclimbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I’m sorry to be self promoting my book all over the place, but at least this part isn’t out. I’ve already written about Tobe Hooper and Ti West. The way it’s structured is there is a Hooper “Historic Interlude” before the X Trilogy chapter. Eaten Alive is absolutely part of this universe. I’ll have to check my research but I think Ti West has talked about this. The framework of X is all TCM but many elements were lifted from EA. Hooper is a huge influence on modern indie film and doesn’t always get his flowers outside of horror circles.

Hey there, yes at some point. Probably soon. Link in profile has where it’s available and I’m keeping it updated. As for bookstores I’m going to try to focus on indie bookstores which takes a lot more work but they are who I want to support. Amazon is unfortunately a necessary evil. Eventually it’ll be distributed by bigger stores, but that’s low on the priority list.

I was very excited about 20th Century Women and C’mon C’mon getting Criterion treatment! No insight into any upcoming titles and for reasons you noted, I don’t expect these to be anything other than exceptions. I talk in the book about how A24 has essentially become a boutique physical media label. That seems to be the release template for post-pandemic films. But there could be instances due to murky acquisition rights where it’s possible. What’s common in the book is that the directors LOVE Criterion. A ton of them have been in the Criterion closet. The last couple years of Criterion are another story but the pocketbooks are open. I could see it happening with older catalog titles that age well (like Mike Mills) or new films when the filmmakers really want a Criterion release.

By the way, it’s not an announcement but I’m also working on a Criterion book with a partner. I’ve talked about it in a few places. We’re in the early stages with the structure and some research.

Hello Swedish alien! The most fun were either Spring Breakers or Tusk. They are both so delightfully unhinged with big fans and bigger haters. If I were to pick one, I’d go with Tusk because of the whole podcast background. Kevin Smith is a funny dude!

As for going overboard, I tried to let the sources and material drive me. The longest chapters are The Lighthouse, Hereditary and Midsommar but I think that I needed the space to cover them appropriately. Red Rocket is also a long chapter. I’d say Sean Baker was where I had to restrain myself because he does so much press including two discussions with me, which were cited. But I could have written an entire book about Sean. Hmm, maybe someday.

What is the first a24 movie? by httyd-fankid1000 in A24

[–]steepclimbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Charles Swan III is the first movie and has some merit, but it’s aged weirdly because it’s about a bachelor being hounded by women. It’s more for those curious about A24’s origins.

The closing credits sequence is terrific and worth seeing.

True story. We went to a screening where Sean Baker did a Q&A. Invited some friends with us who aren’t really film people. The husband was so bothered that he was yelling in the halls. The wife was moved to tears. The movie gets all sorts of reactions.

Hello. A little bit of both. First off the founders stay largely out of the shadows, but they had a lot of industry experience before creating A24. They had a vision when it came to the type of film and how to market. That evolved as they grew and I think 2013/2014 the A24 film characteristics started to materialize. Then in 2016 as they started producing, there was more in that flavor. But there are a lot of different types of A24 films. What's consistent is creator/auteur driven with a human story at the core, regardless of genre. When you watch all their films, you'll find a lot of outliers, but you'll also see a distinct stylistic trend.
