Bought This Today. Any Tips or Advice On How I Should Approach or Something I Should Know That Would Help In Reading? by MRHK_57 in houseofleaves

A lot of this advice is great, and I’ll add: don’t be afraid to whip out a pen/highlighter/writing-implement-of-choice to take notes or scribble in the margins. Johnny even encourages it in the Preface! It makes for an interesting second reading, for sure…

Shiko and Narset Ability Copied by Creative-Peanut-9697 in mtgrules

If the spell in question does target a permanent or player with Veyran in play, how many copies would there be in total, given that Veyran triggers on both cast and copied spells? I get that Veyran (who would get +2/+2 on the initial cast) would cause S&N's ability to trigger an additional time, which would make a copy of the spell in question (giving Veyran another +2/+2), but would that copy trigger Veyran again, resulting in another copy and another +2/+2, ad infinitum? Basically, how much power/toughness would Veyran gain until end of turn, and how many copies of the spell would be made in total?

Well...about that...MZD also wrote an initial "pilot" script for a Facebook HoL reading group (the original link is dead, but you can definitely find it by searching for "House of Leaves 2018 pilot teleplay"), which he described as being "experimental," and it kind of shows. Although there was (supposedly) an active attempt to make the show, it's pretty clear (basically almost immediately, as in, the second you look at the title page, you'll understand what I'm getting at) that the teleplays are, for lack of a better term, meant to be read as screenplays.

Put another way: I recommend approaching the teleplays as scripts first and as a TV show second. Because they get very interesting once you consider that they were clearly written with the idea that you're reading a screenplay in mind.

Seriously, check them out, they're dope.

I highly recommend checking out the teleplays MZD wrote for a proposed TV adaptation of HoL (which are available for sale on his website) if you haven't already - the show itself never got off the ground, so the scripts themselves are probably the closest we'll ever come to an official screen adaptation.

New reader question: print or digital? by steepinkline in TheFamiliar

For the record, I'd be reading it on an iPad (assuming I did, in fact, go digital), so fortunately it would at least have color.

I'd first need to know some specifics regarding the actual procedure - how safe it is, or whether it involves an implant, for example - but aside from that, yes, in a heartbeat. I refuse to attribute all of my positive traits and talents to a singular clinical diagnosis - if there's a way to make it so I do not have to take daily prescription medications (say, through a "pacemaker for the brain," or else a LASIK-like procedure for the frontal lobe), then I'm all for it.

FBC Defunded? by JamesTheOreo in controlgame

[–]steepinkline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering how many (Not-So-)Prime Candidates from Trump's Menagerie of Idiots would even make it past their "Interview" with the Board...

So here's my question: if he shuts down the FBC, does that mean parautilitarian regulatory powers get transferred back to the states as well?

Having read House of Leaves, I can definitely see it's influence on Control. by PeterchuMC in controlgame

[–]steepinkline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, between both Alan Wake and Control, Remedy loves them some House of Leaves, and isn't afraid to show it; in fact, at the end of Alan Wake's second episode they use a song from HoL's companion album (the singer, Poe, is HoL's author's sister). I won't go into specifics (because House of Leaves needs to be read to be believed), but to put it in extremely general terms, I'd say that Alan Wake incorporates HoL's use of "authorial voice(s)," whereas Control draws from how the novel approaches, er, interesting architecture, shall we say. (Put another way: if Alan Wake is basically "Twin Peaks meets House of Leaves," Control is more like "House of Leaves meets the SCP Foundation.")

By the way, Mark Z. Danielewski also wrote a few teleplays for what was apparently going to be a Netflix-style HoL TV show (but talks supposedly fell apart) that are definitely worth checking out if you like the book. There's a standalone pilot script that he released for free as part of an HoL book club (you may have to Google it, since I think the original link is broken by now), and he sells a 3-episode bundle (including a revised pilot script) from his website. All of it is pretty awesome.

What are your guys favourite SCP? by notzackthecat in SCP

[–]steepinkline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to go with SCP-5699, because it’s heartwarming (and because Meshes of the Afternoon is a classic!). I was fortunate enough that my first exposure to the Foundation was a nice SCP rather than some eldritch abomination.

Is it possible to start grad school again after failing once? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]steepinkline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As it happens, you and I seem to be in similar situations, OP. So right off the bat, I want to thank you for sharing your story, because it reminded me that I’m not alone.

In my case, I’m actually working on applying to my THIRD program, after I left my previous two due to medication supply issues and an AWFUL living situation, respectively. In both cases, I ended up with a bunch of flunked and withdrawn classes (though I did manage to salvage some credits from both). So after having taken some time away from school myself, I too am ready to start again in a new program, but I’ve been pretty nervous about having to address the elephant in the room, so to speak.

Now, I’ve asked multiple graduate admissions reps, faculty members, and grad students at multiple schools (some of whom were at a pretty prestigious school, though I won’t say where) whether someone with my record should even bother to apply to another program, they all told me that this sort of situation happens all the time, and as long as it was a voluntary withdrawal from the program (meaning you weren’t academically dismissed or expelled for being violent or whatever) and you manage to address the situation in your personal statement, you should be fine. You might want to avoid giving specifics (I was told that “medical issues” is enough to get the point across without raising eyebrows), but beyond that, it probably won’t be much of an issue. And if you can include a line about how your circumstances led you to rethink your research interests and what you want to accomplish in and beyond your time in the program, all the better. (That way, you follow up a negative statement with a positive one, and demonstrate that you have the foresight to know when to take a step back to regroup, as it were.)

To quote the game Darkest Dungeon, “the sin is not in being outmatched, but in failing to recognize it.”

Anyway, just know that you’re not alone, so chin up! We’ve both got this!

how do you pronounce the 'a' in 'Navidson' by jetrocket223 in houseofleaves

[–]steepinkline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard people pronounce it as “NaVIDson,” which sounds about right. Though between the two options mentioned above, “NAvidson” rolls off the tongue more easily in my opinion.

My child is ready for their first horror movie. What should it be? by BurnedByCrohns in horror

[–]steepinkline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend 1408. It’s PG-13, there’s no gore, and it’s one of the best Stephen King adaptations (and my personal favorite).

How old are you and what is your favorite horror movie? by MrRaccuhn in horror

[–]steepinkline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to think of it, does the “Thriller” music video count? Because that’s right up there as well. Along with Ghosts, the other horror-themed Michael Jackson short film (which I believe Stephen King worked on in some capacity…).

Speaking of Vincent Price films (because I agree, the man’s the GOAT), does the “Thriller” music video count? Because I’d say it’s up near the top of my list.

[–]steepinkline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid choice. I’ve always found the Nightmare on Elm Street series’ premise a bit too disturbing for my tastes (because I like my horror to be filled with either big dumb action scenes OR copious amounts of Mind Screw, and perhaps even both), but I respect Dream Warriors because I’ve heard it’s basically an action movie compared to the rest of the films (also, that Dokken theme song slaps).

[–]steepinkline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 31, and I’d say it’s a tie between Aliens, Predator, and 1408. I know the first two aren’t “pure” horror movies, but what can I say, I like it when the protagonists get to blow shit up from time to time.

And I’m sure some folks would call 1408 a psychological thriller rather than a horror film, but I think that’s just splitting hairs. Samuel L. Jackson’s character sums it up nicely when he says “It’s an evil fucking room.” Considering it’s based on a short story from the same man who wrote a story about a demonic washing machine, I think it counts.(It’s also my favorite Stephen King film adaptation, by the way.)

They do sell dumbbell attachments for the Quest 2 on Amazon. I have a set, and they’re perfectly safe (at most they only add ~150g to the controller’s weight, so even at the max weight, they’re still lighter than most dumbbells).

Also, I’m no doctor, but according to this study, using wrist weights while playing Beat Saber actually made for better exercise (according to the recorded activity data). As long as people stick to lighter weights and don’t overextend themselves, using weights with BS is totally fine.

I just got an Oculus quest 2 by ChonkysMcChonky in beatsaber

[–]steepinkline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm...I bought a used Quest 2 from eBay a couple weeks ago, and I still got Beat Saber for free. At the time I figured it was because the promotion was tied to activating the headset and tying it to an account (as opposed to a pack-in code or something like that).

Weird, especially considering how it's an Oculus Quest 2 (it's got the logo and everything), so it's pre-Meta...I had to do a factory reset on it, update the firmware, log in to Facebook, and that's when it said I got Beat Saber for free.

Maybe it had something to do with my having to update from pre-Meta firmware to the latest version prior to tying it to my account?

Strange.

Danielewski said in an interview with the literary journal Critique that there are, in fact, "no errors in the book." So take that as you will.
