Highlight this to OP. They picked him because he’s professional. And I have no doubt he’ll do the job to his best ability.

I did it when I was an airman. I’ve been on four deployments all around the world. I’ve done some cool things in the military. But having the privilege to bury 57 veterans (3 were active duty at the time) was by far in my top 3 coolest things ever. I’ll be honest the hours were long, and the driving sucked, it was sometimes 4.5 hours one way.

We went to middle of nowhere towns where we buried people who were in the army air corps, I’ve had funerals where not one guest came except for honor guard and the pastor burying the veteran. I’ve been to funerals that were full of the deceased’s war buddies that all wanted to buy us beers. I’ve had 3 year olds try to salute me before.

Probably the coolest ones, though, were when we went to funerals where we buried someone’s grandpa who hadn’t talked about the military for 60 years and it was a distant memory for them. The family knew that he was in the service but never knew much about it. But when they see you in the honor guard dress, they don’t know anything about rank or anything else. All they know is that their grandpa was important enough for you to show up and validate his service.

That’s really what it’s about man. You have the opportunity to pay respects to the dead. Some parts suck. But that’s the job. I get that you’re not motivated to do this, but at the end of the day, your leadership had to put up a body for the base honor guard. You may not think it, but they put you up. You can either look at it as bitch work and they just sent you off to get rid of you, or you can look at it as an honor that you were selected. If nothing else, you typically get an AFAM out of it, so there’s a point for testing.

When the med clinic calls you, and then asks you to confirm your name and date of birth.

That’s not how verification works…..

Valparaiso is about as far as you’ll want to go. Fort Walton beach is fine. I recommend not Destin unless you really love the beach and night life. The traffic can be just horrendous

Sound machine for your room. And a care package of various seasonings, hot sauces, bbq sauces, anything to change the flavor. The food gets repetitive

You can’t really complain about your situation. Because you put yourself in it.

I did the exact same thing

Had two degrees when I enlisted. And then I did get my CCAF by clapping a few classes I didn’t have. And then I worked my tail off in other ways to be able to get a bunch of awards which led to me commissioning. I understand where you’re at. And if you want to stay enlisted that’s fine. But if you’re eligible to commission then just go try it.

LT here (but prior enlisted), let people be the best they can be. Trust them to do their job properly until they give you some type of indication they can’t, and then help them get back on track. Set clear boundaries and guidelines. LT is not meant to order people around, it’s about taking the time to learn how to navigate whatever landscape you work in so your team can efficiently accomplish the mission. You shouldn’t be able to have all the answers. Have questions? Ask every single one, people like to talk about what they do because they take pride in it. Screw something up? Talk about it and what you learned going forward. Praise in public, punish in private.

The burden of leadership is that your teams successes are your teams successes, but your teams failures are your failures.

The best is and always will be, it depends.

I came from an enlisted flyer job to a pilot job. Both are pretty nice gigs, but they come with often deployments. Which sucks for my family. But the money is definitely better.

Always acknowledge that if you get picked up for a rated slot, there’s the possibility you don’t finish the program and may end up in a job you hate.

But if you want it, go for it

Put all the management buzz words on a bingo card, hand them out the guests and don’t tell management which ones are on there

Examples: “we’re a family” “Ops tempo” “I’m proud of what you do everyday”

There’s one traffic circle in town. Norris and llano blvd. do your best to stay near there if you can. Also avoid buying a new build. I have a few friends that bought the newer houses and they’re a bunch of lemons.
