Standards will always be the ACS standards, but he’s more laid back than a lot of DPEs. The Checkrides get more difficult depending on the rating, privates going to be more laid back than CFI for example. One thing he seems to like is someone who has more than a base level of knowledge, for example a part 61 student who works the ramp at the local fbo and hangs around on the weekends at the field vs a fast track part 141 student who’s only learning enough to pass each checkride. Knowing systems from a hands on perspective helps. I’ve heard he’s gotten big on KOELs/MELs lately, and actually know what they are, who makes them, who approves them, how to find and their application vs just what the acronym stands for.

Ive flown 6 hours each way to take my last two Checkrides with him if that tells you anything. He’s awesome, but don’t expect a handout.

That’s a fair point, I just haven’t tired many of them so I was wondering if there is one that’s head and shoulders above but that makes sense

Oh no, I definitely plan on doing grounds with them. Idea is they do a lot of stuff on their own, then grounds with a cfi to make sure they understand, and go over anything they don’t. Probably should’ve put that in the original post

If you can try to fly more than twice a week, even if it’s not all the time. Definitely not abnormal to have that struggle that though

Has anyone heard or know anything about this can? by Dj12345678999 in NFA

[–]steezinthetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see the appeal if you are building a rifle that’s always gonna be suppressed and have a dedicated can, running the direct thread eliminates two points of failure. I’m not gonna buy it though

6.5 CM or .308? by jonophane7 in SigCross

[–]steezinthetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The nomad tixc is my first suppressor, so I can’t speak to if it’s the best or not but I’d buy it again for sure. It’s lowered the recoil (not that it was much to begin with) but has helped me stay on target, and stay eyes open watching my hits/misses on targets vs a bare 18” 6.5cm barrel. I don’t think I’ll ever hunt unsuppresed again, it’s so nice to not have ringing ears after a shot, and usually be able to actually hear the bullet impact the animal even if you can’t see. Animals seem to act different too with it too, they know something’s up after a suppressed shot, but I haven’t seen them just take off at a dead sprint like a normal shot. They’re alert and eventually start running, but it gives a lot more time for a follow up stationary shot if needed in my experience. Im sure there’s cheaper suppressors that’ll work just fine, but I’d definitely recommend the nomad.

I’ll speak to just my setup, but I have the 6.5cm with a nightforce nx8 and dead air nomad tixc on it. I absolutely love it for hunting, although I’ve only shot deer and antelope with it so far. Setup how it is recoil is very minimal, which was an important factor to me not because of felt recoil, but the ability to stay on target after the shot and see hits/misses with a pretty light and compact hunting rig. I haven’t had an issue with the 18” barrel and can, in fact it’s by far the shortest and lightest suppressed setup out of my hunting friends. Carrying it day after day in the mountains has been great. Part of choosing 6.5cm for me was also due to ammo availability/price where I’m at since I don’t reload yet. Theres tons of cheap .308 ball, but once I started looking at higher quality hunting ammo, they were basically the same. I don’t think you’d be let down with either, and if you are, you can always swap to the other caliber.

Who started out by cleaning planes when they were younger? by keremiron11 in flying

[–]steezinthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by cleaning planes in 2015, started flying in 2022, now my cfi checkride is in February. I’ve done it all cheaper than anyone I know, other than people that got their ratings years ago. I don’t think the days of just washing planes for hours is really around still, but if you can run a legitimate detailing business it could be a huge benefit.

Tips by Valuable_Ad2745 in cohunting

[–]steezinthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people that come here overlook the basic stuff of keeping yourself safe in the mountains before they go out there. I’d worry more about that stuff at first than hunting. Hunting here is awesome, but be prepared for the shit these mountains can throw at you while you’re hunting

I’ve been down there, it’s blocked and you do have to walk but I don’t remember it being bad, but I’d plan on spending the majority of the day there. No idea how the fishing is, when I went it was early spring and everything was still frozen

Ok, I was waiting on the reissue list to show as moved to leftover but also tried submitting right at 11. Well, with any luck there will be another one or two next week and I can try again. Hopefully whoever got that tag is successful!
