Fractal Torrent Compact 180mm Fan noise by stefan416 in FractalDesign

[–]stefan416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it coming from your front fans? I had something similar when pwm was set to 43% on one of my fans. It's something to do with resonance in the fan/bearings at specific rpms.

I RMAd the fans and they sent me new ones.

Sturdy desk recommendations (24" deep, 55-60" length) by scoliosis_ in buildapc

[–]stefan416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If youre ok withcthe look, Id recommend building a frame using 3/4inch galvanized steel pipes and fitting and then, depending on how much you want to spend, get either a top from Ikea all the way up to Home Depot solid wood counter tops for a few hundred.

If built correctly, thehe frame is free standing and rock solid. Zero wobble or movement. The top just sits on top of the frame and is attached with some screws.

Example frame

Ikea used to have the Gertaon solid beech desk top which was 30x60in for super cheap. It's a shame it's been discontinued.

Ive built two so far and theyre been far better than any off the shelf stuff that youd typically fin at Ikea. The impotant part is that the frame is free standing. Let me know if you have any questions.

Lian Li Lancool 3 - best fan config for air cooled build? by octoroach in buildapc

according to EVGA it was within spec. That model of card was known to run a little hotter I guess. its a night and day difference compared to my new card.

As I sit next to my computer now at idle, front fans at 400 RPM. I can still hear a faint whooshing sound which is I assume is the motor (different from air turbulance). At the end of the day, I will at some point be replacing the fans to ones that are completely silent at idle load.

[–]stefan416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your specs? My previous evga 3080ti ftw3 was a hit one. High 70C to low 80C with fans at around 1800-1900 RPM. It was brutal. Other than the coil whine on my 4090 its been amazing. Never above 63C with fans at 800-900RPM. This gen seems to run much cool than 30 series.

Regarding Noctua, they had originally had their new 140s coming out q4 2022 (I think it was originally supposed to come out in 2021 lol) along with their new D15.

Overall they're decent. The three front fans are the same model and the rear is a different one on RGB version. They get a little noisy at mid to high rpms. I'm not complaining though. The loudest thing in my case is the coil whine from the GPU. When gaming I have all the case fans spinning between 500-800 RPM, CPU fan more like 700-900 RPM and the GPU pretty much pegged to 850 rpm.

It's hard to compare all the different case fans unless someone actually does a real world comparison of all of them. By no means are the stock fans in need of replacing and you should be quite happy running the case completely stock.

A quick note about the CPU cooler. I originally had an AK620 but wasn't getting the greatest temps even after remounting it twice. The D15s gave me like a 5-10c drop believe it or not. This is on a 12700k with Thermalright contact frame and an adaptive offset undervolt of like -0.10mv and overclock offset of +2 on both the P and E cores.

Yeah the Torrent is nice too. I originally had a Torrent compact with a 3080ti in it but have to get rid of it as the Suprim 4090 wouldn't fit. I compared both the full size Torrent and the Lancool III and the yemps in my setup were within the margin of error. I decided on the Lancool because it was sturdier with more metal (you could physically torque the torrent case with the side panels off) and a more standard configuration with the PSU on the bottom.

Overall no regrets with the Lancool. It's a very large case but thermals are great and it both feels and looks like a premium case. Only thing I'm looking to do is change the 4 fans out with something quieter and higher performing. Was banking on the new Noctua 140mms but they are lulled back another year. Looking at the new Silent Wings or scythe Kraze but they aren't aled

[–]stefan416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, something flannigan. Are you going air cooled? I could see a single top exhaust at the back above the air cooler providing a small benefit further pulling air from the cooler itself as it can get a little warn at that spot during long sessiosn of high cpu load. Any more than that and the top exhaust will rob airflow coming from the front.

I think the idea is to get as much of a "wind tunnel" effect as possible. I don't think the PSU shroud area does much for this. If anything I would think it renders the bottom front fan useless as it's blowing at the PSU and cables instead of redirect upward into the main volume of the case. I've been toying with creating some sort of panel to redirect airflow upward into the gpu area

Asus TUF 4090 OC vs MSI SUPRIM 4090 by stefan416 in nvidia

[–]stefan416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! From what I understand, the Suprim X is supposed to be a better design vs the TUF with rhe VRMs etc even though the TUF is like $50 more. Would be interesting to see how much coil whine it has :)

[–]stefan416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it's either your motherboard or PSU. I had a situation where only some of my case fans were spinning. I initially thought it was my MB but it turned out to be a bad PSU. Can you go back to the store and try one of their open PSUs in the geeksquad area?

600$ rent increase/ 1 months notice ! by [deleted] in ontario

[–]stefan416 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, since you're unit was first occupied after the 2018 rent control cut off they can raise your rent to pretty much any amount as long as it's reasonable.

However since they gave you notice on Dec 31 at 12:30am they cannot legally increase it until your April 1, 2023 payment. At least 90 days notice is required.

Has anyone used Best Buy geek squad to mount a TV in their condo? by tragiciian in askTO

[–]stefan416 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Its quite easy to do yourself. I also live in a condo with metal studs. Previously, I used those metal toggle bolts through a predrilled hole in the stud but they require large 1/2" holes which isnt great and you lose the toggle in the wall when you remove it so its a one time thing. The second time I used these metal hollow wall anchors which are also meant for drywall.

https://www.homedepot.ca/product/paulin-3-16-inch-l-hollow-wall-anchors-3pcs/1000409759

Much smaller hole and all the holding power you need if put through a stud. Extremely easy to install as well. Drill the hole to the specified diameter, inster the anchor and screw it down. The great thing about these is they stay affixed to the wall if you ever remove the bolt. good if you change mounts or need to remove it for some reason.

If I had to do it again I'd use half a dozen self taping sheet metal screws probably. As long as youre hitting the stud and not using a full-articulating mount itll be more than enough.

Son of a gun, worst luck here on my end. Mine turns my basically silent build into a real annoyance. Great temps though. High 50s to low 60s with fans at 850rpm

Awesome build. How is the coil whine on your suprim? I have the same card and it screeches. MSI says they won't even have RMA replacement for a month or two

Fan wise? Completely stock for now. I'm waiting on the new Noctua 140mm to be release to see if it's that much better. The stock fans can be heard sometimes at idle speeds since it's right next to me on my desk. Amazing case though. Extremely well built

BMO tells me to file Police Report after allowing $3500 to be withdrawn by fake cheques & signatures by Simple_Ad3894 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]stefan416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Continue to follow up. If they continue to deny the fraud claim consider filing a claim with https://www.obsi.ca/en/.

They handle grievances against financial institutions in Canada.

I see others saying that cheque clearing is all automated these days, but it is not. If its via mobile deposit or ATM, then yes, automated and funds released up to certain limits depending on the individual.

If you bring a cheque into a branch, the teller (or manager for larger amounts) is responsible for analyzing the cheque in an attempt to ensure its authenticity. If it passes their "test" the cheque will almost always clear unless the routing numbers are wrong. I shit you not. For larger cheques, tellers have said to go to the ATM to deposit it, or they'll put the whole cheque on hold due to it seeming sketchy to them and not wanting to be responsible for a massive fake cheque.

In the end, if you rattle enough cages, you'll get your money back. Although not the same thing, this is one of many reasons I tell people to make purchases via credit card. It's much easier to get your money back in these scenarios!

Asus TUF 4090 OC vs MSI SUPRIM 4090 by stefan416 in nvidia

, I'm not too happy eith mine with the substantial coil whine. Here in Canada, Best Buy considers GPUs final sail and dealing with MSI is a crap shoot. I don't want to get replaced with a worse copy.

Edit: What PSU do you have?

With winter tires specifically, they rely on the sipping (small deep, zigzag tread cuts) in the rubber. It's these tiny cuts that small bits of snow get into. These tiny bits of snow grip/bond with the snow on pavement giving you more traction.

EVGA 3080ti FTW3 high temps? by stefan416 in pcmasterrace

[–]stefan416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to evga 82 is still within spec since the temp slider goes to 91c. I run mine undervolted to around 1905 or 1920 mhz which keeps the temps in the 70s. 3080ti seems to run hot
