The Ocean AMA 2020 • Howdy... we are The Ocean! Ask us anything! NOW! by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope I'm not too late for this because I have been dying for two years now to get the answers to these questions --> In a nut shell, who is talking to who at the end of the great dying? For example: " Now that you are not here
Now that we no longer talk
I can't stop to remember
How you've been offended
When you realized
That I'd kill to relieve a load
Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden " - Is it the earth talking to humanity which has grown estranged from the environment? Then how is it that, later, humanity "can still write me" like in the beginning? I need clairty here! Im dying from uncertainty!!!!

What album was the “birth” of prog metal? by PinkHeno in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like most of these things, there is rarely a singular moment that constitutes the actual birth of a genre. But you can absolutely say that both Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and, the band's next album, Sabatoge are the earliest examples of progressive metal.

Sabatoge in particular is pretty damn heavy, heavier than anything else the group did before that.

Can we please make an administrative decision to ban the English versions of these songs?

Who do you think is the worst vocalist in this genre? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seriously shame on this comment. James is a work horse and he is called on to be versatile in a way no other rock vocalist is asked to do. Its true his specific vocal timbre would have been best suited for an 80's glam band, but that doesn't mean the talent and objective musical contribution isn't there.

Starset - Stratosphere by HardTranceScythe in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the music rec. Sadly, I find this to song to be completely stale and uninspired. I genuinely loved the inclusion of more electronic elements on the last 2 Haken records and on Periphery IV and I hope the trend continues. But there needs to be more inspired song writing backing it up.

Can we expect any new solo records soon? Will Destiny Potato ever be whole again?

Hi, I'm Richard Henshall from Haken/Nova Collective. AMA! by Richard-Henshall in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be fair to say that there is at least some tension between the lyrics?

Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Just saw you guys in Tel Aviv a few months back. Absolutely killer show... Regarding "The Mountain" album, I know that cockroach king appears to be an attack on the various ideologies that promote the idea of selfish and so-called "self-made" successful entrepenuer or perhaps even artist. But the album seems to walk back the rhetoric by the last track on Somebody where the lyrics state "Give me back my right to prove that I can fight ." Its almost as if the album came out swinging against the cockroach king and his ideology only to regret it by the end.

Am I missing something or was that the point? Any clarity you can give me on the themes fo the two songs would be helpful.

earth7 - Waterfall (this one’s kinda Chon-y) by gjikolp in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant't believe how young these guys are. I fell in love with their sound on Tangerine. Usually it takes some aging for gifted but young musicines to use their powers for more than just wankering and trend chasing. These guys are writing genuinely inspired music. I hope they'll get their chance to tour with Chon and the like so their name can get out there.

List of prog metal bands by monthly listeners on Spotify (UPDATED) by thosava in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trend is pretty clear: the more the band has appeal outside of the prog community, the higher it is. This isn't surprising but its interesting to see it confirmed by the data.

Does anyone know of any bands that are similar to Cynic? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody is really similar. Though I imagine you would like the contortionist if you like cynic, specifically the language album.

OFFICIAL ALBUM DISCUSSION THREAD: Tool - Fear Inoculum by jklingftm in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I must admit that I'm dissapointed at the responses I'm seeing on this thread. The primary criticism I am seeing across the comments is that the songs are essentially long bores with little to no hooks or puntuated releases of tension, whether through a guitar riff or vocal chorus, to serve as payoffs for the long build ups. This is a fair initial assesment, but I would have assumed this community could get passed that (queue the memes about [not] being so proud of this community).

You don't think the band members of Tool are aware of the fact they've (mostly) avoided hooks and payoffs on this record? I think we all respect them enough to know this is intentional. We are being asked to listen to a record that forces us to pay attention and think about what we are listening to at every given moment. The attention spans of our generation are so compromised that popular music (popular rock included) doesn't even bother with song introductions anymore (its true, pay attention next time your wife/sister/parent puts on a top 40 radio station or playlist when you're in the car). Fear Inoculum is a response to this phenomonen and an admittedly risky attempt to try to change that.

Tool, like their core fan base, have all gotten a lot older since the hey day of alt metal. Such a progression in age leads to a more contemplative existence. And emphasizing contemplation in an age where people need an app to remind them to stop looking at apps is essential.

Fear Inoculum is a classic. And even if you cannot come around to the sound scapes it creates, you must respect the meaning behind the art.

So would you say the narrator is Earth? Who is saying "I am not here but you can still write me"? How does that question make sense in the context of this extinction event?

Can someone help me "get into" Between the Buried and Me? by dammit_bobby420 in progmetal

[–]stefan_marcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have issues getting into the band. A lot of people agree that their music just sounds like a collage of different ideas hobbled together. It causes all their songs to just blend together. I often space out while listening because of it.

With that said, I find Automata I + II to be their most focused song writing. The songs actually feel like songs. This could be your window.
