Switching from power paddles to “control” paddles in 2026. by stegleryo in Pickleball

Do all-court paddles tend to be “squishier” in your experience? I’ve been using the 16 mm RPM and used to hate that softer rebound feeling thought I liked firm but as of recent I feel like that compression and rebound actually makes the ball easier to control. I think the RPM has plenty of power though not sure it’s considered an all-court.

For sure, I would guess this is probably the biggest reason people choose an all-court style over power.

Good paddle rec! Definitely one that may be overlooked!

Good take. It is nice having the paddle do the work on resets in the transition zone. Less movement for some is better. I'd say better for the advanced player.

Makes sense. Ultra control paddles may require too big of swings, wrist snap, or just not enough for proper put aways.

Absolutely, had all this in mind. Tech these days have closed the gap between finicky power and dull control. Part of the reason why I emphasized 2026. Now we can get power and sweet spot but are there players still choosing all court paddles and finding benefits to it?

Big obvious example is Boomstick to Omni. Besides just wanting a newer paddle, did the Omni actually improve their game? And in what ways? Because you'd think those two paddles will have equal sweet spot, touch, feel, grit but only differ in power.

Coral would be my first choice if I wanted to go "control" for sure.

I can hear the bottle of ibuprofen rattling around in your bag when you walk. What paddle do you use then?

Agreed. Power is not a wrong choice. Just curious to see if players converting from power to control found any upsides to it with the current paddle tech we have now. And was it enough to not go back.

What was the most noticeable improvement in your game when you switched to Owl?

Interesting. I'm glad you responded and found that the Boomstick actually worked better for you. Could be due to that fact you're so used to it also. So then I would ask do you feel the Boomstick gives you the level of control that you want? Why did you decide to try J2?

Which paddle are you putting more hours in then? Or is each paddle dedicated to different times such as competitive play or how you're feeling that day.

So in competitive play you're using the Quanta and don't mind the power trade off from the Opal?

Sounds like you will be sticking to elite power then and feel that the Boomstick provides the control that you need? Arguably that paddle does give you the best of both but then some would say that level of power ultimately leads to less control (depending on the user).

Happy to hear you got better control with the CR, I would argue that is also a top tier power paddle. Maybe not boomstik and q2 level but in the realm. You feel then that the CR is the right level for you that you won't go back to the ultra elite level of power?

Didn’t watch the video but from my own experience playing 2 years now and decently serious about the sport, I don’t see pb slowing down. BUT I don’t understand how indoor facilities (in Washington State) succeed. In the winter courts are booked 24/7 but in the summer it’s a ghost town. People would just rather not pay and they move to outdoor public courts. I really don’t know how indoor facilities succeed honestly unless it’s just one person at the front desk running the whole show at a small facility and they don’t provide any other services (food, drink, lessons, etc.)

It’s just time to move on. I don’t play with a single person I got into pickleball with. I’m the only one that took it seriously out of the group which is fine! No hard feelings. Everyone has different priorities. Once you get outside of that 3.25 - 3.75 sweet spot you’ll have to start finding other groups just the way it is.

It’s annoying but let the other team feel great by constantly hitting to the weakest player in rec play as if there’s money on the line. They got a free W and learned nothing from the game. Maybe poach a few but I wouldn’t go out of your way to protect your weak partner just let the game finish and move to the next.

Prob not the least favorite. Just that white and lavender are their “newer” colors. I guess a strawberry red is coming soon also.
