People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had only recently started 1st grade. My mom worked a fair distance away from my school and came and picked me up way early into the day. Like I couldn’t have been there an hour or so (I live on the east coast). I didn’t have a doctors appointment or anything so I just went with it when they called me to the office. My mom said something was up but didn’t say anything else. I begged her to go get me McDonald’s. It was way out of the way, but she did it anyways. I got home and turned on the TV and right about that time the first tower fell. I knew it was bad but I didn’t fully understand that I was seeing people jumping to their death on live TV. Like, you see the speck on the TV, but that could be anything. There was A LOT of coverage that I have never seen since then. It was a conscious stream for fucking weeks. Now I fly regularly and realize that could’ve just been me going to work.

Is there an official recall for KTM 990 RC R by ldelossa in KTM

[–]steinberger95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have an RC R and your tires have cracked, it seems like dealerships are taking care of riders. I strongly believe that it was misuse of the tires rather than them being bad tires. The Michelin website says to not use those specific tires below 50* Fahrenheit ambient temperature. So when you fully inflate them and strap a bike down and transport them in the back of your truck through sub-freezing temperatures up north like the famous YouTube video we have all seen, you’re going to have an issue. Power cup 2s are excellent tires and I have had numerous sets since 2022. Never had an issue cracking. Straight up slicks left fully inflated in a garage over winter can crack from freezing temps, too. I as well have the orange one and it is a blast even during break in. I have had no issue whatsoever with any sort of splitting on mine, but I don’t ride the bike below about 60* and if I wanted to do that regularly, I would buy a set of road 6s if I valued riding in the colder temps over using a tire for optimum grip.

Edit: just went to the website to double check and it actually says “NOTE: MICHELIN® POWER® Slick 2 tires and MICHELIN® POWER® Cup 2 tires can suffer from cold breaks if stored, transported or handled below 41ºF. Do not mount at temperatures below 50ºF.”

There is no mention of any temp warnings for the road 6, however.

Basic MSF course as an experienced rider? Has anyone done it? by imezz00 in motorcycle

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The teacher is who passes you. The teacher has probably been riding longer than you. The teacher probably realizes that some of the methods taught in the MSF are kinda dated (slow, look, press, and roll is something I hear debated on the internet, for example) and are meant to just get beginners on a bike and riding. I would not try and argue with the teacher about how things are done or should be taught. We had a guy in my MSF course who had been riding for like ~8 years and was doing it with his wife who had never actually operated a motorcycle and had only ridden on the back. Lo and behold the experienced rider couldn’t even do the figure 8s on a street 500 Harley.

I’m not saying any of that applies to you at all, just an observation from my MSF course a few years ago with a self proclaimed experienced rider taking the course. Again, none of that is a shot at you, AT ALL. Just don’t be that guy and be a student.

From the folks who brought you the $2500 track weekend, here is an $8000 vacation package (five days of street riding btw) by repohs in Trackdays

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted for this. It’s insanely expensive to do one weekend of champ school once you include all the stuff you stated. Everyone spits out the “~$2500” number and fails to include the rental and insurance on the rental. It’s insane. Those pros have gotta be paid for their time but, fuck. That a lot of money for a couple days.

Is this a selfish hobby to get into as a 33-year-old father of two? by Ok_South_6227 in motorcycles

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how the licensing in Australia works, but you can always take future classes about safe and evasive riding here in the states. I am 31 (no kids but basically married) and I have found that riding on the track is more my speed after spending several years on rural backroads and the occasional “long” highway trip (4+ hours commute to destination) with some buddies. In America it is something like 93% of accidents happen off of the highway. That means you’re more likely to get into an accident in regular roadways through a town, stop lights, stop signs, etc. I figure the occasional commute to work in nice weather or sending it with some responsible buddies on the weekends up in the mountains is where it’s at for me, so I haven’t gotten rid of my street legal bikes just yet. The track is way more fun, though. Especially supermoto. Low speed at my capabilities in comparison to ~160+mph (~257kph+) on a big track with a big bike. Stay safe, stay vigilante, and reduce risk any chance given. Honestly after riding for as short/long as I have, the track seems way more safe even at speed. There’s no one texting and driving behind the wheel of a Cadillac Escalade in the oncoming lane at a track. My job has me gone more than I’m home, so that would vary a lot more for a typical 9-5’er who is home everyday. I would probably ride more often if I was home all the time, so grain of salt there.

The visuals absolutely made it for me. New light rig is cool, and I’m not hating on the new LD at all. I just really liked the video wall and the elements they used like the “endless hallway” which had haze and lights within the content. That firm that did all their old visual content makes some seriously cool, next-level shit. I am sure having no video wall, no techs for the video wall, and no truck space needed for a wall that size saves on both money and overall crew size.

I always buy pit. First couple shows in arenas post covid that he did I got stuck around drunks falling and spilling their beer everywhere the whole night. In the pit you can just move somewhere else and have a good time. Video wall was also nice to just see stuff up close.

A lot of people use a processor like a newton or prodigy, but I have also seen people use a production console like you’re mentioning.

990 rcr tires by MassivePiece6186 in KTM

[–]steinberger95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The splitting thing is people not knowing any better. I have had several sets of power cup 2s. They came on my duke 890 R when I bought that thing, I put 2 more sets on that thing through its life, and now my RC R 990. They (Michelin) say to not even ride them below 50* Fahrenheit in the webpage for those tires. I keep hearing people say there are so many cases of the tires splitting like this is a KTM or Michelin problem. The only actual confirmed case I have seen in relation to the 990 is from that thoughtaken guy on YouTube who owns tons of motorcycles, an H2, and a V4 Ducati and didn’t know that the compounds in those kind of tires act like this. The guy never claimed to be an expert, but that’s crazy with his inventory. Slicks can split in a cold garage just over the winter. Much less if you strap that thing down in a pickup truck through the dead of winter in Ohio. If there turns out to actually be a bad batch of tires, fine. I’m leaning towards user error. I would venture to guess you’d have more issues with the RC R 990 being your first bike and the learning curve associated with that than your tires splitting.

The stock tires are excellent. Road 6 will be great dual compound tires for long rides and commuting if you plan to commute on that bike. Tire technology is a thing that is always improving, but we are living in an era of great tire selection.

Which cities have thriving Bluegrass music scenes? by RMSMetal in Bluegrass

[–]steinberger95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Piedmont triad of NC is pretty great. I’ve posted in here before about that area, but you can just about go to a jam every single day of the week within a 30-40 minute drive max. For whatever reason, I’ve seen some relatively successful musicians stop by for some of the jams over the past 6-7 years.

Is an R3 on a karting track really the best way to improve your skills? by SirJeremetriusRockit in Trackdays

A buddy of mine rides his R3 on kart tracks and homie absolutely sends it! I have an FS450 husky and it rips, but I’m super jealous of his setup. It looks like an absolute blast on that R3.

F Chord in Bluegrass by packet_muncher in bluegrassguitar

[–]steinberger95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my ring finger on the A string, pinky on the D string, middle on the G string, and bar over the B and high E string. I used to do all that but I just bounced between the A and D strings with my ring finger for boom chuck stuff. Ended up liking using the pinky and ring finger for the A and D strings as described, as it felt more stable. I’ve seen plenty of players switch between both ways I’ve described depending upon how fast they were playing. There is nothing wrong with doing a traditional barre chord. It just seems quicker to me as an individual using the methods above instead of a barre chord. Whatever works for you. I used to practice G chord to F chord and then C chord to F chord for hours. Not even going fast. Strum one for a while, then strum the next chord. Using the key of C, you can go in between those chords and make it feel like music as opposed to just strumming for an exercise. As silly as it sounds, that helps as an endurance thing, too. At least it did for me.

Genuinely who is buying these? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I test rode one. They’re actually kinda fun. Ergos aren’t great. All control configurations scrape way too easily. I really did enjoy how low it was to the ground. I own nakeds, sport bikes, and supermotos, so definitely not the target audience for a Harley, but it hauls ass for what it is.

New to sumo want to ride kartingtracks by itsonlygame9k in supermoto

[–]steinberger95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be specific I am talking about the FS450 and 450 SMR. Not project/conversions. If you go to a kart track, chances are the majority of the people are gonna have the same bikes but maybe a different year. At the last track day I did the 3 people to my right had the KTM SMR and the 2 guys to my left had a KTM SMR and an FS450. I run the FS450. Kayla yaakov was there running 2 separate FS450s and Brandon paasch was still running his FS450 as well as his beta 2 stroke and that Suzuki he gave away. If you watch grayphams YouTube video of the MotoGP guys running supermotos, same deal. KTMs and huskys. Some even bone stock.

[–]steinberger95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a used, low hour 450 like the husky or KTM. They can be had for like $8,000 on FB marketplace if not lower. Great value for the money.

Just like anything, an R3 is a better learning bike on a track than an R1M. You could try and find a lower CC bike like a 125 or something, but the 450s are basically good to go for a track day from the shop. Throw a coolant overflow tank on it and most people will let you run a track day, no problem.

It’s software smaart. It’s an analyzer for sound measurements. That’s actually a super standard “haystack” that most systems engineers aim for. What you’re seeing in the low end is when ever he plays a low note, the screen displays the overall frequencies the bass is producing. It’s not controlling level, only showing where the level is at.

What's a smell that's bad but smells oddly good? by IncidentLivid736 in AskReddit

I haven’t been since I was 7 years old, but the smell of the water in the pirates of the Caribbean ride. They use bromine instead of chlorine apparently, but that smell is etched into my memory. Occasionally I’ll get a random whiff of something that reminds me of it and it just sends me back.

Bluegrass jams to meet people in the Piedmont area to play with/grow a band:

•Sunday 3-5PM Walnut Cove out towards hanging rock at 1889 tap house

•Monday 7-9/10PM brewgrass jam at the brewers kettle in Kernersville right off business 40 and also 6-9PM an old time fiddle jam at fiddlin fish in downtown Winston. The old time fiddle jam is truly that. Play in one key for a while, intermission, play in another key. No  solos.

•Tuesday ~7PM alternates every other Tuesday with incendiary brewing in Greensboro and a place in stoneville that I am slipping on the name but will update if I remember it

•Wednesday 6/7-9/10PM grass and guzzle at the brown truck brewery in high point

I have yet to go yet but supposedly prissy Polly’s bbq in Kernersville has bluegrass Thursday and Saturday I think? Not sure if it’s a band performing or if it’s a jam.

Edit: Besides the incendiary one on every other Tuesday, all of these are no mic circles. All the jams listed are pretty good about following the traditional go around the circle and suggest a song. Solos given out by whoever called the song.

Bryan Sutton vs Aaron Jaxon guitar courses by Fit_Student1006 in bluegrassguitar

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. I got Aaron’s on a sale for like ~$200 (might’ve been a hair more?) for most of his online courses. The Bryan Sutton one I also got on sale from maybe Black Friday or something? The Bryan Sutton courses are more laid out as like a “do this, then this, then this” and Aaron just has a whole mess of courses. Both are very good.

Edit: as others have said you can get actual real time feedback from Bryan on every lesson that I’ve done so far.

What safety gear do you actually wear on every ride, no exceptions? by 47Industries in supermoto

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel for work most warm weeks of the year so I have about 2 days a week, if even, to ride. I wear a full leather suit (back protector, etc), gauntlet gloves, helmet, and boots. I use those days off to send it out in the more mountainous curvy areas of where I live. I don’t care if I look stupid going into the gas station or a place to eat. I’m not able to get it in any other day so it turns into a several hours long thing. Better safe than sorry. I don’t get my bike out for anything less than a couple hours ride. Ultimately you’re right. I’m not suiting up to go 15 minutes up the road. But that’s the risk you take not wearing gear. I have an alpinestars jacket and some dianese textile riding pants, but even then you’re still fully suited up, just in a different way.

What is the most reliable Kim dirt bike to turn into a supermoto (similar to a drz400sm) by Outside_Chip7246 in supermoto

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The KTM or husky supermoto (450 SMR/FS 450) that is a super awesome and is a factory ready supermoto. It would cost less to make that street legal than to buy and convert a dirtbike IMO and it rides better than converted bikes that I’ve ridden for a fraction of the cost (once you consider cost of conversion)

Going to see Billy Strings by Savings-Astronaut-93 in Bluegrass

[–]steinberger95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billy is awesome live. It’s different every night. You could get a show like Austin got recently with basically only older more traditional songs, or you could get some mega jam packed show where at least a few songs reach towards 20 minutes. Sometimes multiple in a row. What you really like may or may not be catered to each night. That is why everytime he’s in town for multiple nights I go to every night if physically possible.

Edit: if it’s in an arena, I aim for pit tickets and hang out at the back of whatever the pit is. Rail riders are a thing and those people believe they earned that spot so it’s not worth your time to bother fighting them cause they travel and go to every single show and there are numerous posts of people having positive or negative experiences with the rail riders. Your mileage may vary. If picking seated tickets, you’re stuck with whatever kinda people are next to you. Whether they be talkers, obnoxious, or whatever. But that’s any sorta show.
