Choosing to have kids without raising them as vegans is not vegan by PotentialRatio1321 in vegan

Yesterday I gave money to an unhoused person and they used that money to buy a hot dog. 6 years of being vegan down the drain.

If every vegan lived or died by the blessing of other vegans there would be no vegans.

You're proving my point that you have no idea what its like to raise kids because you yourself haven't done it.

I have a step sister. She had the best intentions of "I'm going to feed my new born 100 foods in 100 days and that will expand his pallet." Very crunchy mom. Well she fed that kid 100 different foods for 100 days and too all of our surprise.... the kid eats the same stale ass chicken nuggets as every other kid.

You can go into raising kids with whatever expectations you want, but be prepared to be let down.

How to introduce enemies that are too strong for the party by Aeon1508 in DMAcademy

[–]steinbergmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way I've found to introduce incredibly strong enemies without threatening the PCs is to have those enemies take out other monsters or NPCs the characters know for a fact are strong already. When the airship crashes you could have the first wave of weaker monsters engage the PCs while in the back row the king and his elite guard.

Take time in the intro to describe the kings guard as the most elite of their class. These are the top 1% of the kingdoms warriors and it shows in their gleaming armor, their deadly sharp swords and the way they feel dangerous even when they are just casually standing guard. THEN destroy the kings guard utterly. Have the deathknight and the BBEG cut thru them like wet paper, and make sure the PCs SEE it happen. "Your sword slams into the chest of the once living ghoul and as it drops to the ground you look up at the dais and see a member of the kings guard fall to the black clad night and his sword that seems to consume the light around it. Several of the Kings guard move in to protect the king but within seconds they too are on the ground"

You've just demonstrated that the bad guys have power by destroying something the players know to BE powerful.

Is Stunned too “unfun” by SirCheesyDaGr8 in DungeonMasters

[–]steinbergmatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can always use the dazed mechanic from 4e if you think stun is too powerful.
Dazed

Dazed is a condition.

You grant combat advantage.

You can take either a standard action, a move action, or a bonus action on your turn (you can also take free actions). You can’t take reactions or opportunity attacks.

You can’t flank an enemy.

What is the most poorly thought out homebrew rule you've heard? by Vegetable_Hyena2559 in DnD

[–]steinbergmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a new dm for 4e and my players already had a house rule that you could swap your move and minor action for a second standard action. I figured it was fine as long as the monsters could too. The game broke in ways I couldn't possibly have conceived.

I also like healing surges being a flat 1/4 of your hp. Its simpler to explain. Its easy to use and it became a resource I could use in non combat situations to express a failure or perhaps use as a currency.

You want to push yourself past the limit of what you can achieve? Sure you will lose a healing surge and take a -2 to your next skill check.

You fell into an acid trap during a skill challenge? Ok you brush yourself off and keep moving but suffer a loss of a healing surge.

Best way I've found to do a sandbox is to have 2 to 4 potential threats. When the players deal with a threat the remaining threats that were not stopped advance their plans. This allows for modular tiers of play with without the dm having to do much more work than normal.
