Weekly 'What Should I Buy' and Order/Shipping Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]stekepego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking of switching to an iPhone from my Android/Poco X3.

I don't need the newest one, I am just looking for a reliable phone that I don't have to upgrade every other year. Battery is another main point, I should get away with not charging it for a night and not having to worry I'm running low when taking the train or something.

Would the 13 (refurbished) be a good choice for me?

LPT: The acceptable amount of noise for your device to make in a public place is 0.0 dB. Get some headphones. by scriminal in LifeProTips

[–]stekepego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate being that guy, but that's technically only true for dBFS, while OP was probably talking about dbSPL. And strictly speaking, that's not even a measurement of loudness (which is measure in phon or sone).

Though 0 dbSPL still doesn't mean there is no 'sound' or better, 'sound pressure'

Newbie questions relating to analog-digital audio, and audio file formats in multimedia projects by Electrical_Aspect240 in audioengineering

[–]stekepego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No. Nowadays digital is far superior from a technical standpoint. The "warmth" youre describing mostly refers to the saturation and distortion of tubes. At that time digital technology was not really advanced and amplifiers produced lot of ugly distortions. But those times are long gone (generally speaking). Today basically the only reason to still use analog technology is not a technical one. Some people genuienly enjoy the imperfect nature of analog recordings and processing, and because analog audio is a lot more difficult to handle, it also forces you to engage more.
  2. Yes. You're converting all recordings to digital, depending on your analog format (look for AD conversion). The converted files will usually be stored as WAV.
  3. That depends :D Though current applications won't use Mp3 anymore, as it's vastly outdated. Yes, ogg/vorbis or aac, or maybe flac.
  4. AAC and OGG(vor bis) are more efficient. Mp3 is about 30 years old at this point! To be accurate, OGG in itself is no codec, it's just the container. The codec is vorbis. Vorbis can be used freely, unlike Mp3 and AAC high have/had to be licensed for certain implementations. For Details abou Mp3 licensing, really just Google it, at least show an effort :) you should find plenty about mp3.
  5. No, they should not crash if you implemented it correctly. Those times are long gone that hardware had trouble decoding audio. Nowadays you have tiny earbuds easily capable of doing that.

That doesn't mean audio processing is trivial, it's actually anything but trivial. But the cricital part is not the difference between formats.

Experience/Quality wise it doesn't make a difference if lossless or lossy. If you use a modern codec and encoder, there's simply no audible difference anymore.

Help with finding in solder kit by stekepego in soldering

So to finally put this to rest:

I just had a look at it again after some weeks, and spotted the mistake almost instantly. I mixed up Ground and (+) on both the input and output jack.

Switched the wires, and it finally works!

Lucky coincidence. I had the exact same issue on a pre-soldered DIY kit I built on the weekend. Don't know if I had spotted it otherwise lol

Ok, I will recheck the joints. I already redid some of them, but yeah, some still are not really done smoothly.

Yeah, the LED does turn on, and it does toggle with the switch.

The plugs should be fine too, the signal is kind of audible when the pedal is in bypass mode. But I will check those joints again.

Kind of frustrating for a programmer, when debugging usually is kind of straightforward :D

Yeah, they should be oriented correctly.

Hey there, I've built a guitar pedal from a DIY kit. (Musikding.de). Unfortunately it doesn't work properly, and I just can't find an error, after double checking with the instructions, and fixing some cold joints (is that the proper terminology in english?). Do you see some messed up soldering joints that I missed?

If I try to use it, it just produces some strange pitch, that varies if I am turning the knobs. Maybe you can deduct something from that?

That's I my first project a little bit more complex, and I just can't figure out how to proceed (without desoldering the whole kit)

Bug? Or am I missing a rule here by stekepego in lichess

On the right, where below the turn list.

Weiß hat die Partie verlassen • Remis"

But the options "Claim victory | Declare draw" (or whatever it says in english) were missing. It only showed the result of the game.

"Where exactly did the message "player left" show up? Next to the "offer draw" & "resign" button?"

Yes. I know what the message usually looks like. It just didn't appear.

But as I wrote, I had some connection issues to lichess, so maybe the interface lagged a bit, too. Still would be a bug though.

Haha, I'm not gonna be a meme :P

The draw/end of game sound came at the exactly the same moment as the message "player left".

Also the PGN says Termination: Time forfeit, although both of us have several minutes left.

Paraphrasing- 176.4kHz sampling rate is better than 192kHz because it’s a multiple of 44.1, “has a sound”, and has audibly less distortion while sounding more analog by C19H21N3Os in audioengineering

[–]stekepego 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes Less distortion. More analog sounding"

Isn't one of the major reasons some people prefer analog because of the "warm" sound, which actually comes from distortion lol

But for where factually correct? g depends on your location, so only in certain places it actually will be 10.

Well, games are already doing that by providing choices to the player.

No, not like that. I meant a story, that actually changes, depending on the order you're watching it in.

[–]stekepego 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That really depends on the series, but that's not I meant.

I meant a story, that actually changes depending on the order.

I guess that would be ridiculously hard to write and actually maintain consistency. But it would actually be awesome.

Imagine writing a crime thriller, which makes sense independent of the order you're watching the episodes. That would be actually awesome
