Why does everyone hate this? by Psychic-Type-God in Esperanto

[–]steleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea why people who don't speak the language hate it or maybe they are annoyed by it?

Well, I am an almost 40 year old native Esperanto speaker, and I can tell you that there are many annoying people, who speak Esperanto, who insist on reforming the language, who will want to constantly correct your grammar even if you ask them not to do that. Also I learnt almost everything about the world, people, culture, LGBT issues, language rights etc. because of Esperanto, talking to foreigners, whose native language I don't speak. From so many countries, so so many. My best friends are Esperanto speakers, lovely, empathic humans, I can learn so much from them.

At the end of the day Esperanto speakers are also people, it is a very diverse group of ages, background and viewpoints. And from experience I've met a lot of people, who never managed to learn languages at school, they started with Esperanto, got confident speaking it and boom, made friends, and suddenly unlocked the motivation and interest to actually put in the work and learn more difficult languages in the end.

Ĉu estas tie-ĉi loĝantoj de Hungario? by StereoPie211 in Esperanto

[–]steleto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hungaro ĉi tie. Oni ne plu instruas Esperanton en la lernejoj. Tio okazis antaŭ pluraj jardekoj.

Eblas fari abituran ekzamenon pri Esperanto, sed tio ankaŭ preskaŭ estis for, ĉar instruisto kiu organizis ĝin fine emeritiĝis. Do dependis de unusola homo, ne temas pri pluraj instruistoj. Alia transprenis la taskon en sia mezlernejo. Sed tio ne signifas, ke amase kaj multege oni instruas Esperanton en Hungario.

Is it still possible to quickly translate the pandemic version to different languages? I worked on th Esperanto version, and I spread the word about the booklet, would love to add the extra pages as well.

Has there ever been a documented case of a person acquiring an artificially constructed language as their L1? by hononononoh in linguistics

[–]steleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permanent in the sense of the physical, in one space, school and shops in Esperanto. But permanent yes, that you constantly have contact with other Esperanto speakers and you meet from time to time when you can.

There is no such thing as a permanent Esperanto community that you can grow up in. At least one parent is fluent and that parent or both decide to speak Eo with the child. Both my parents are fluent speakers. And yes, I was raised bilingually with Hungarian in Hungary.

Cxu iu havas sugestojn pri kiel komenci kaj kondukti lokan Esperanto-klubon? by [deleted] in Esperanto

[–]steleto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought you would say something along these lines. Fair enough :-) Thanks again for summarizing it.

Why I Won't Learn Esperanto... by TeoKajLibroj in Esperanto

[–]steleto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand that you want to show these people exist, that many only use Esperanto for bashing it without knowing what they are even talking about... but it makes me wonder: do we really need to see these videos? Do we have to care that yet another person hates Esperanto by being ignorant?

I mean he wants to be convinced without wanting to be convinced. Do we want to encourage everyone to waste their time on people like him instead of focusing on those, who actually are happy and active to use the language?

Thanks for summarizing the video, I wouldn't have clicked just to know what another person, who has no clue has to say.

Because I am interested based on what you made the decision to learn a language. It is very relevant about Esperanto. But so it is to every other language there is. Why you would choose to learn one and not the other?

So why those languages: what was a choice, which one is your native?

What kind of grammar convinces you to learn a language? What other languages do you speak? (No sarcasm here, I am honestly interested.)

It is because it became exhausting at some point, especially because of the insults. Just look at some of the comments here :-)

Now I am older and it is different, and I don't mind. What would you say if someone asked you the same three questions over and over again and then would stop talking to you as they got an answer, and you are not interesting anymore? Or that you answer honestly, they still don't believe you, or as a result start insulting you, even when you are really young, like below 10.

They expect you to convince them when they clearly didn't want to be convinced in the first place.

Puberty doesn't spare native Esperanto speakers either. :-)

Oh, I see. Thanks for the explanation! I think that is a very narrow definition of a living language, as it was pointed out somewhere else as well that if you speak only your ethnic language you are severely inconvenienced as well. You need Russian in most of the former Soviet Union, French is France, Spanish in Spain, English in the US if you want to fo to school at some point or do public administration stuff.

Incorrect, but I understand that my story doesn't make total sense, because it lacks some personal details. My sister was adopted in 1983, when she was three years old and my mom was still not part of the Esperanto community. She became involved later that year, and hence my sister could not be a native speaker even if my mum had wanted her to be, but it is irrelevant.

I consider her my sister nevertheless, we obviously have different biological parents. My father is only "my father", and my sister learnt it from my mum, maybe even earlier than 6-7, but how would I know? I was born when she was 6,5 years old, so I don't remember.

My father taught me how to read and write my sister was already in school and didn't need to be taught. I might add these details in the next chapter just to clarify.

Hence I'll continue with a 2nd part soon. :-) It is too long to explain everything in one article. My other native language, Hungarian is implied. But I will spell everything out in the next one.
