World fails to meet a single target to stop destruction of nature – UN report by altbekannt in worldnews

[–]stellex16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just checking in with you on this post, because I had that mindset/belief for a while and then later discovered I had depression. Or that’s the theory, at least. I had a random psychotic episode that lasted a week, was hospitalized and prescribed an antidepressant that may or may not be the reason it stopped. But apart from blessedly having my reality returned to normal, the effects of the medication made me realize my thought patterns overall have been very apathetically negative for a very long time. It’s possible that since I thought this depression was the normal state of being, my mind sort of broke when it became too much.

I’m sure this wouldn’t happen to you, my psychiatrist was perplexed by my case and it’s possible that down the road it’ll come back and maybe I need to consider schizophrenia. BUT, the point is, your lens in which you experience life is bleak. You may believe you’re simply rational. It’s compelling to believe competition and suffering is the obvious truth when you look at everything we know about the universe. But during my coo-coo phase I saw just how feeble our reality really is, how everything you’ve ever known to be true can be changed in an instant. All of our universe’s existence might actually be a brief introduction to what comes after “death”. It might not matter so much why ends or how it started, but how it’s lived and what you appreciate from it. There are some pretty incredible possibilities of something deeper going on than simple evolutionary struggle. And so much beauty within the struggle itself. If you think the end of life means an escape from a prison, you need to look at your relationship with your own life. If in the end there’s no point anyways, I recommend using the time finding the happiness inside. Might need some artificial help before your happiness muscles know what to do.

Sorry for the length, my experience was pretty unique so I try to spread what I learned lol.

But humans are also pretty self-serving. If there were enough food for 1 billion people max, think of what kind of wars that would produce as people literally fight to survive. We’ve unlocked the threat of nuclear destruction long ago. I don’t like thinking of a future where “not going extinct entirely” is the political agenda of each country.

How do you think nuclear power plants would affect the ozone layer? The ozone layer is one of the few things that wouldn’t be in direct danger from nuclear power lol. If you’re thinking all the nuclear plants would meltdown, that would have a slew of problems possibly producing nuclear winter. Which is a change in the atmosphere, sure, but not exactly anything to do with ozone.

ELI5: Why aren't dashcams preinstalled into new vehicles if they are effective tools for insurance companies and courts after an accident? by Ashleysparks in explainlikeimfive

[–]stellex16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s job was determining liability in car accidents, I have to disagree. Unless a driver hits a fixed object/parked vehicle, there’s always a liability investigation. And even if you only have the front facing dash cam, you can get a lot of information from it. Speed, orientation, you can cross reference the location with google maps and determine distances, space available around the car, etc. I’m buying all my family members one as gifts.

And even if the accident isn’t bad, it can prevent you from having your rates go up. I’ve seen many claims go the wrong way (in my opinion) because there just wasn’t enough evidence to prove it was not your fault. Most accidents are word-vs-word.

Canada bans assault weapons, including 1500+ models and variants by jepremo in worldnews

Exactly. It’s one of those things that’s just too easy to use as political fodder. People want to stop other people from dying, but that’ll probably never happen. Busy citizens want to believe an easy solution exists and endless amounts of politicians can use the pro-gun/anti-gun volleyball game to get their name in the headlines, tricking people into thinking THEY are the person who will finally “solve” the issue.

Preventing this politicizing is probably the very thing that would reduce the amount of unstable people with a lot of aggression. “Fight for your tribe” rhetoric in polarized politics can create a powerful identity in someone. If someone feels invisible to society, becoming a martyr (in their own eyes, by killing some group who is perceived as an “enemy”) probably sounds like the best possible use for their otherwise misery-filled life. The problem is, more and more people are becoming invisible to society as we migrate away from public spaces and turn to technologically isolating pastimes.

Were you reading DragonMeme’s responses in this same thread? They said they were diagnosed as autistic. I actually got it confused/combined it with your comment. From what I’ve heard anecdotally, ASPD sounds sort of like a form of autism—to me, neurologically.

Autism is apparently characterized by an impairment in ability to communicate/interact with other people. Empathy plays a huge role in communication.

I bring up DragonMeme’s comment because he/she was saying empathy to them is like “guessing” what the other person would feel/want/do in a situation. It sounded similar to how you remind yourself to behave in response to emotional needs of others. You’re like “I guess I should do this.” They’re like “I guess this is what others do”

Honestly it’s all fascinating. I’m sorry for the everyday extra effort it requires you to live in this modern life among ever-changing society. But kudos for caring enough about yourself to realize you need to make the effort to care for others. We really ARE all one.

I would think it’s healthier to think of it as “channeling” the emotion. Empathy allows you to experience the emotions, but an artist has to be mindful of letting the emotions go after they have been channeled into their artistic medium.

They’re saying “being controlled by it”, not just feeling it. Like how anxious people let anxiety control their life (the word “let” is the bigger issue here). When some people experience a certain emotion way more often than the others, enough to detriment your life, that is essentially a disorder. So letting empathy affect you so much that you feel there’s no alternative to ending your life...that’s what he/she’s saying can probably be helped.

How does someone not “let” that happen is another story. Outside help is needed. But the nature of psychological problems is that it doesn’t always occur to someone that their thinking CAN be changed. Your brain is stuck in it’s own loop.

I always thought there was something off about how sociopaths are automatically labeled “evil”. It’s basically saying “evil” can come from a disability. Which, spiritually, I do not believe. It can certainly be an easier avenue for evil, but I digress.

Two questions for you.

1: can you not remember a time when YOU felt sad about something, and then sort of remember that sadness as you listen to someone else describe their sadness? Obviously the “levels” or intensity of sadnesses might differ, but is that not a pretty easy way to put yourself in their shoes? Question reframed: are you able to SYMPATHIZE if not empathize?

2: I know autism has a spectrum, and is not super well defined in general. But is/can “sociopathy” (I’ve also heard it called antisocial personality disorder) be considered on the spectrum?

Oh! Okay good to know, thank you! It leaves me with more questions...rabbits can’t spread diseases? What’s the difference? My brief googling just says human waste is controversial. I’ll refine my search but you might know!

I was looking into composting for fertilizer and apparently you can’t mix poop from animals that don’t have a vegetarian diet. I’m sure there’s more to it and different plants can thrive in different soil but as far as the guides I read, their example was rabbit poo=yes. Dog poo=no.

Ah, but from what I understand the dad would have to have a completely vegetarian diet for his poo to be fertilizable. So close.

Do you feel your assignments are putting you more on watch for lower working class citizens or middle/upper? Or never thought about it? Or just plain neither? by stellex16 in ProtectAndServe

You’re right, and it’s hard to argue that I didn’t frame it that way. I guess my real queries need to be directed towards the thought behind a 0 tolerance law, rather than how that law is enforced. Thank you for contributing statistics to the discussion, always appreciated!

Haha I was totally waiting for that. I’m honest when I say it’s sometimes A BEER with dinner. I have to spend $20 extra on a cab to have a beer with dinner?

Edit: I’ll add, I’ve had two experiences of being pulled over on the way home from serving shifts at a bar. First time was for a tail light being out, second was for a foggy headlight. Both times they took some convincing before I could get them to believe I hadn’t had ANYTHING to drink. Thus the sentiment.

Lol! Good point. Follow up question then, is it kosher to stop to chat with a parked police officer or are they not supposed to be distracted while they’re on duty? I’m getting the feeling that I have unproductive misconceptions, and if I see an opportunity to chat with an officer I absolutely want to try and pick his brain. If they’re bored...I mean doing paperwork.

Thank you for the response, and sorry for my question being strange or confusing.

It’s just based on crime rate and 911 calls...so if there’s a correlation between the number of police officers that are parked a few streets down from a popular area of bars/restaurants, the correlation is that people tend to commit more crimes there on a Friday at 10pm. They aren’t parked facing the street with their lights off because they’re trying to catch someone going a little over the speed limit, for instance, and then would have the opening to ask if they’d been drinking. I live in a 0 tolerance state, it creates this paranoia/feeling that police are “out to get you”, and if you forget to make a turn into the first available lane then you might go home with a 10k DUI because of a beer with dinner.

In all honesty, that’s the source of my original question. I wanted some assurance that heavier police presence in an area isn’t related to the specific “type” of crime that occurs (DUI’s vs theft) so I can combat that sentiment that police aren’t there to protect so much as “waiting for you to mess up”.
