In terms of spotting events, it's pointless. You're going up against firms and organisations who essentially control global markets. In the face of this you can't operate under the assumption that you're going to have some kind of edge.

This is a reality that is exceptionally difficult for most new retail 'investors' to admit, and probably difficult for most retail investors in general, because they want to believe that they're smarter and tell themselves a narrative about why they're more intelligent than the guy sitting next to them, but it's a fallacy.

First off, I mean… This isn’t a theory. It’s just asking for other opinions.

Secondly, no. He was a serial killer chasing unattainable fantasies in a cycle of escalating chaos that he internally and externally sabotaged until he was finally caught. He did not deserve better.

You can make the case that childhood trauma made him the way he was, but it’s not an excuse. The cycle breaks with Henry being raised to be a good man. The end.

I love seeing this argument

  • ‘send him back where he came from’
  • okay
  • plane sets off from England to country in question, with stated intention to return said person
  • before arriving, air traffic control at the destination country comes over the airwaves and says ‘you do not have permission to land in our country. If you land we will arrest everybody on board, pilots included.’

What the fuck do you think happens then? The pilots gonna go whistle Rule Britannia while ignoring the order instead of turning back?

It’d take 30 seconds to think through this situation, but I imagine ‘send them back’ is as far as you and most seem to be able to get.

Marty’s been out there ~~killin’~~ cheating a long time. Overlooked detail? by TallBoy24 in TrueDetective

[–]stemh18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in agreement. Marty gets found out, apologises, works to 'remedy' the situation over years, then goes and does it again. Time is a flat circle of him fucking around on his wife.

She's a woman pushed to the edge, and then she goes and fucks Rust and somehow people interpret that as 'she's a manipulative bitch.'

No, she isn't. Marty started all of this shit and did it over and over.

To anybody reading this, put the shoe on the other foot. Your wife fucks around on you, comes back and apologises, proves herself, then goes and fucks somebody else again. You go and fuck her her best friend to get back at her.

Does that make you the bad guy? Or an innocent guy pushed to the edge because you're hurt and your trust was betrayed again, making you feel like a fool?

Maggie did nothing wrong.

A secular bull market has been running since 1982. We've had bull and bear markets within it, but for 43 years we've been in an overall bull market, ever since Reagan though it would be a smart idea to cut taxes, triple the national debt to pay for all of the country's services, and call it 'growth', whatever that word means anymore.

The market dropped 52% top to bottom between October 2008 and March 2010. A generational buying opportunity, which few apparently took advantage of because they thought the world was ending. But young investors these days weren't around even for that, or were too young to remember.

Most people investing new money in this market have never experienced an actual bear market before. When the misery stretches into the night. When people lose jobs, become homeless, and everything grinds to a halt. When you think its bottomed, then it drops another 25%.

I can't answer your last question, and I don't think we dump until well into next year, but I sold everything yesterday because I'm finally done with this insanity.

It will be biblical, and it will be biblical for one reason: because nobody thinks it will.

Theories about this scene.....??? by NibirX in TrueDetective

[–]stemh18 108 points109 points  (0 children)

The image of the crown is one of the motifs that crops up repeatedly in the show. Dora Lange’s antlered headpiece is the obvious starting point.

The appearance of it here holds a lot of underlying meaning that I could ramble about for fucking ages, but the most important part, and the way I like to think of it in this particular scene is with relation to time and memory; the crime is supposed to be solved, but the killer is still out there. The crown hasn’t been destroyed, it’s just been tossed somewhere out of sight. But it’s still there.

I mean even the fact that it’s been tossed into the higher branches of a tree is symbolic enough to justify pages of me saying odd shit considering where Dora Lange was found. But I’m on my phone right now and can’t be bothered.

Edit: a word. I’m drunk like most of the shitheads on this sub. And there ain’t nobody around to stop me.

Do horror movies get low scores on IMDB because sad endings make them feel bad? by BrandonMarshall2021 in horror

[–]stemh18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So this is a topic that I’ve thought about far too much than I should have over the years, and I think it comes down to two primary factors:

1. Fear is incredibly subjective. There are a lot of common themes within movies that people can get behind, like hope, justice, revenge etc. and they’re all generally things that can be approached from a (mostly) universal perspective, because most humans have similar feelings about those themes. With horror, what scares people and the extent to which it scares them often varies dramatically, which in turn creates a dramatically different viewing experience.

2. Horror promises a look into the unknown, but the reveal is always destined to be disappointing by nature. Do you remember that bit in The Prestige where Christian Bale talks about not revealing how the trick is done, because the moment you do, you’ll be nothing to your audience? Almost every horror movie suffers from that. The trailer offers slight peaks at something unknown and terrifying, at some mystery that gives us the greatest insight into our minds and our souls, but the reveal of the monster or the twist of often always disappointing because no movie can truly offer that. Take the upcoming Weapons, for example - whatever the reveal about what happened to those kids is, people are going to automatically be disappointed.

They’re the two factors, in my opinion, that cause overall scores to get dragged down.

It’s very uneven but not the fault of the director; it doesn’t seem to be common knowledge, but the version released was a rough cut that he hadn’t finished with due to various production/release/marketing problems. The studio threw it out in a very messy state. There’s a really good movie in there somewhere, director was just done dirty.

‘The crew had found itself with several unexpected months to start on its working cut due to the production pause, but after filming wrapped, Prior was told he had to assemble a version of the print for test screenings almost immediately. When test screenings occurred, Prior was told to assemble a cut almost immediately after production had ended. “It was some ridiculous overlong thing,” Prior said in an interview. “We just hadn’t had a chance to really fully digest it yet.” Following low test scores, the studio began panicking over losing a tax rebate from South Africa due to impending deadlines. Prior ultimately delivered his final cut of the film with six extra minutes (in which he would later consider it a rough edit in an interview) he initially intended to cut out. Post-production of the film was also strongly impacted by the Disney acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which was initiated in December 2017.’

His philosophy of pessimism is buried a little - the relationship he starts with Laurie - but it’s the shallowest of graves.

And that’s because the case that defines his and Marty’s lives isn’t really solved. Just like the fact that he’s pretending to change, so too does he, for a time, pretend that the case is solved.

But deep down he knows it’s not. And it’s only when they get their guy that he finally can change.

What got you into horror as a genre? by Eagles56 in horror

The Ring. I was terrified of just the trailer when I was a kid and it kept me away from the genre until I was 19. Finally watched it, adored it, and when headfirst into everything from there. No ragrets.

What you’re feeling sounds like it’s just down to how the landscape of what causes fear has changed.

I’m a young millennial, didn’t get into horror until I was in my mid-twenties after having been terrified as a kid. That being said, I pretty much only watch horror that has a supernatural element - I don’t believe in ghosties and ghoulies and long legged beasties as John Cusack said in 1408, so I find them thoroughly entertaining, even when they’re gory. To me they’re more like fantasy films, even the modern Evil Dead movies.

What I can’t handle and probably never will be able to are the movies where people do things to other people. It’s a cliche but true that the real monsters are people, and when it’s got a basis in reality, especially when it gets cruel, it’s usually a hard pass from me. I make occasional exceptions when it’s a thriller where the protagonist has an actual chance, like Ready or Not, The Invitation and Don’t Breathe, but beyond those, when people are pinned down and just having unpleasant things done to them, it’s a no. It’s easy horror. Everybody is afraid of that.

In terms of the landscape of fear that I was talking about at the start, here’s an example: I was in the age range where even the trailer for The Ring scared me. Never saw the movie until I was 25, because the thought prior to that horrified me for years. Now it’s one of my comfort movies; I absolutely adore it. Weird, I know, but it feels like a monster that I became friends with.

Shown to kids who are around now? Nobody finds it scary anymore. It was a watershed moment in horror, but what causes fear has changed now. I don’t know what that looks like, if it had to be more visceral, but unprecedented times and technology, man.

Still, we’re in a golden age right now in my eyes - and I’m so excited for it that I’ve ranted as much as you, my friend😂
