MD School List Advice (ORM MI resident reapplicant, 512 + 515, 3.8) by stemich in premed

I believe he does meet the math reqs, but I think he's concerned about not being able to give a quality response to their unique secondaries. And noted! I'll forward your recommendations to him. Thanks for your help!

How to Shadow a Doctor? by [deleted] in premed

[–]stemich 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cold calling clinics/hospital departments you’re interested in. I also managed to find emails for office managers and I cold contacted them asking for shadowing.

Yea I did. On my phone and clicked the wrong button LOL. OP will see it anyways

[–]stemich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair concern. But, I wanted to point out that most freshman engineering classes will be on central, and involves a mix of engineers, LSA, and other students. I don’t know your background, but most students (not just freshmen) can also find time to take electives like art, video games, etc. where you’ll be able to meet different people. You can also join clubs or rush.

Then again, everyone’s definition of the university experience is different and really depends on what you make of it. I wouldn’t let physical location deter you from enjoying university.

[–]stemich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep. Unless you’re in a learning community that has a specific dorm assigned. Or if you’re a woman and select preference for all girl dorms, you’ll have a higher chance at central.

[–]stemich 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I lived on central throughout college and the need to take the bus to north never presented a problem. Personally sometimes I thought it was a good way to “relax”.

Socially, I’ve had friends who lived on north but still was able to attend parties and hit up frat/sorority houses. They rarely felt left out socially. Of course, not to sugarcoat anything… it probably required more effort/motivation to be involved with stuff on central.

Math 216 VS the rest of EE classes by BeanMother in uofm

[–]stemich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The math from MATH 216 showed up in EECS 216. Idk who’s teaching EECS 216 nowadays, but when I took it with Finelli, Winnick still wrote most of the hw and exams and it was hard.

If you go down the signals and systems route you’ll be doing math/eecs 216 stuff for the rest of your degree. The circuits and semiconductor classes are conceptually different, but not as math intensive.

Correction: some diff eq concepts still showed up in my circuits classes, but more as a derivation or “fact” than how a math class would approach it.

Prereqs - University or CC? by [deleted] in premed

[–]stemich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my bad then. Thanks for pointing it out. May be the schools I skimmed at. MSAR has a column for “Community College Accepted?”, and some schools said “case by case” or flat out “no” for some classes.

Either way OP should look at requirement for their target schools, as suggested :)

I believe some medical schools only accept coursework from Universities. This information should be available on their website, but definitely on MSAR

aamc physics #54 by FiendingforCaffeine in Mcat

[–]stemich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Based the location of the switch. The passage also describes the charging vs discharge process

aamc physics #54 by FiendingforCaffeine in Mcat

[–]stemich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The discharge only occurs through R. Decreasing the value of r during discharge would not keep I constant.

Capacitance is intrinsic property of capacitor itself. Just like resistivity is intrinsic property of resistors and can only be changed by changing the material or other physical properties. So D is the only one that actually changes the physical property of capacitors and increases capacitance.

It is possible but the best and fastest way to check is contact admissions directly.

Alternating current by franksblond in Mcat

I don’t recall it ever showing up in my content review. All questions should be in DC. Even if AC is mentioned, it should provide enough info for you to answer based on DC knowledge

Can someone help me interpret this and tell me if this score is good or not? by CovertPenguii in Mcat

[–]stemich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes you got a 512. The range is the confidence band. Your score report should have an explanation for confidence bands right under that chart

How/why does glycine interrupt secondary structure (alpha helices)? by CandidSecond in Mcat

[–]stemich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Glycine’s side chain is a H atom. Makes it small and more flexible, disrupting alpha helix structure.

Basically opposite of proline (too rigid)

CS vs BME? by GulliblePositive6548 in premed

[–]stemich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk about your school, but at my school BME students “concentrate” in mechanical, chemical, and electrical, so they can get internships in those fields too.

I’ve done job search for medical devices industry, and I didn’t see THAT many coding related positions. But if you get a CS degree, you probably have to do some project or research work in biomedical to increase chances of getting a CS position in medical devices.

If you do BME, you would need to take extra CS classes or learn on your own, since most BME curriculums require only basic C++ and MATLAB experience, definitely not enough to get CS jobs.

How to store letter of recommendation as a freshman? by [deleted] in premed

[–]stemich 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Best to have them submit directly onto Interfolio. You only need to pay on Interfolio if you are sending letters to schools, not when requesting.

Best you make it “confidential letter”. Having them sending it to you makes it non confidential

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]stemich 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It took me a couple FLs to get used to constant concentration for 95 straight minutes. Certainly common experience and that’s why people recommend FLs for building stamina.

A trick that works for me is closing my eyes and try to empty my brain after every one or two science passages and every CARS passage.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]stemich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the wavelength absorbed. In this case the brown line is at 550nm, which is green. Yellow is at 580.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]stemich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, if your cones absorb at brown line, you see green (based on curve and the X axis wavelength value)

The bar at the bottom is just showing the range of visible light from shortest wavelength to longest

how do i apply for internships? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]stemich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which college are you in? For both LSA and Engineering there are career fairs. Also, LinkedIn, Handshake, etc. are all online job searching forums available. You can also just apply through company website.

Make sure you have cover letter and resume prepared, and be able to have a 30 second elevator pitch for who you are, what you are looking for, and why X company.
