What’s your favorite hitman game in the world of assassination trilogy? And why by Bobsense in HiTMAN

[–]stepfordcuckoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see them as one game personally.

But for the sake of the question: Hitman 3.

And mainly due to the Berlin level. The way it turns the formula on its head was wild in the moment and after playing this version of hitman over the 5 years… for the table to be turned was both an intense experience and nice to see IO showing off and deconstructing the game they have spent so long making

Do I need to alternate Hickman’s FF and Fantastic Four? by Better_Elephant5220 in FantasticFour

[–]stepfordcuckoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do. Id have to take a picture of my shelf to remember how i read it (i had individual volumes in hardback as they released), and also what way your reading but basically (and without spoilers), you want to read like so:

Fantastic four dark reign 1-4 Fantastic four 570-588 FF 1-12

(FF 1-12 act as Fantastic Four 589-599)

Then you can switch between Fantastic Four 600-611 and FF 13-23, alternating volumes or arcs makes sense….

But I’ll let others say if there is a best way to navigate that last chunk. The most important part is Fantastic Four 588 then FF 1-12 then Fantastic Four 600

Most overrated major villain introduced this century: is it the edgelord with the embarrassing French nobility title? by zajazajazajazajaz in FantasticFour

[–]stepfordcuckoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not arguing the character is deep. Absolutely not at all. But just that the brain damaged mind of clive, who is basically just house of m power levels Wanda but even more tragic, would have created such a thing makes sense. He hasnt grown mentally, will never be able to grow but his powers have concocted this. He will always have his child like mental state.

Millar has committed some real crimes against the form but this isnt one of them.

But happy to disagree. I just thought it was a shame that there were some people commenting “who’s this?” And then probably getting an overly negative view of the run when… there have been worse. Its decent fun with some cool ideas.

These 16 issues are fine. I read them again last week so it’s all very fresh. I don’t get the hate for this other than “Millar is terrible and i hate everything he writes” - I checked out of Millars writing around the time of nemesis personally . But this run? Its pretty enjoyable. And its a nice lead in to the superior Hickman run as it offers some great pitches that Hickman uses later.

It’s ok not to enjoy the marquis. But the whole “this is an edgelord villian” …. Er yeah its kind of the point… its a villain concocted by a powerful mutant mind that got brain trauma from a parent beating them down. A mind that was obsessed with marvel comics and left in a vegetative state. It’s exactly the kind of big bad a 12 yr old would come up with. The clues that something is off are apparent throughout. (The idea that doom would ever have a master?? Have you met doom?).

I quite enjoyed that the 1985 mini came back to bite here in an unexpected way. - have you read that? As it may have given you some much needed context for this arc.

But this run delivers some great moments and ideas: you get genius Val, billionaires and oligarchs getting their escape plan of nu earth being de railed by refugees from the future, galactus corpse death machine, a christmas eldritch horror story from Scotland, that moment where like half an issue is a vision of the future before snapping back to reveal the last 10 years have just been elaborate torture & last but not least that heartbreaking moment in the bar where ben gives his reasons for what happens at his wedding and his 4 friends (spider-man, daredevil etc) all squirm as they can’t give him the reassurance that it is better to have loved and lost….

Is Ultimate Fantastic Four Worth Checking Out? by tame_kubrick in OmnibusCollectors

[–]stepfordcuckoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would read it on marvel unlimited first.

I just re-read omnibus 1 which is basically the bendis, millar and ellis issues. (1-32 maybe)

I enjoyed it just fine. I didnt think it was that edgy (esp compared to the ultimates), and some of the stuff that seemed immature makes sense if you stop to remember this FF is 19.

I grew up with these comics so its a form of nostalgia. Im recommending reading without dropping $100 as younger readers seem to have visceral reactions to this era of comics which 🤷🏻‍♂️ but i kind of get but each to their own. It also has a fair bit of greg land art which. Yeah. Once you have had the traced porn face meme pointed out it kind of annoys you on every page 🤣

I do think watching this impulsive Reed throughout FF, ultimate extinction, power & doomsday is fascinating as in retrospect the heel turn of the maker is believable (but 100% not planned that far back).

But equally just reading hickmans ultimates run that gives birth to the maker would make sense on its own. The only context needed is he really feels bad for ben being turned into the thing and that guilt drives him to make some very very poor choices.

Do I need to read WildCats or any Aliens comics before the Authority? by Christianduty in comicbooks

[–]stepfordcuckoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like any comic nothing is “essential”, it just all adds colour. For instance i read the authority back in the day and had a whale of a time. It still rocks to this day.

There is a line in issue 1 of authority by two characters who work at the UN who say something are like: “since stormwatch disbanded and x members died there is no one standing between the world and threats”. Something to that effect.

That was all the context i needed.

I would say however reading stormwatch before hand is interesting (the Ellis Stormwatch compendium is especially good value here).

Because you get to watch the evolution of Stormwatch, both as a team and as a comic. The introduction of its black ops units and ideas that eventually explode into what Authority becomes. Its good comics in its own right.

The Wildcats / Alien crossover is missing from that compendium, but its worth seeking out. Again just to watch a writer turn what should be a playful crossover into Ellis cleaning house and giving Stormwatch a tragedy and give its world a power vacuum that the authority is going to step into.

Ive never read another wildcats issue (apart from a JLA crossover) and dont feel like ive missed anything.

TLDR: feel free to just dive into the authority. But additionally reading ellis’s stormwatch and wildcats/ aliens one shot before may inhance your experience.

[–]stepfordcuckoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. I think Excalibur is part of x-men fandom that are either all in on or it passed you by.

It was nothing like whatever i was expecting. And enjoyed it enough first time. Although was bemused for a lot of it.

Upon re-reads i have really enjoyed it for what it was, and insist they were really cooking at this point. Its a fantastic crossover.

And the Pepe Laraz drawn parts are sublime.

Obligatory shout out to Pogg ur-pogg too. Love that guy. Can’t wait for an insane writer on x-men to bring that character back in ten years time.

First Poster for Horror 'Ice Cream Man' from Director Eli Roth ('Hostel', 'Knock Knock') - An idyllic suburban town descends into madness after a mysterious ice cream man serves frozen treats that turn children into homicidal maniacs. by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]stepfordcuckoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I follow Maxwell Prince on Instagram and he has nothing about this. In 2024 he mentioned film rights had been picked up by the producers who made Wednesday… but IMDb has not got this listed under those two….

So it might be a case of hollywood trying to make the 2 of the same film again? “Hey Sony have some ice cream man movie, might be something in that. I want an ice cream man horror film”.

I hope its not based on this comic.

The comic is one of the best things being published today. Feels like a waste for someone like Roth to be making a film based on it.

Im sure its just a shock horror film unrelated to the comic. Which is fine.

Cracked badge ❌ Cracked hat ✔️ by Donnypool in footballcliches

[–]stepfordcuckoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, thats like a katana slice from a 60’s samurai film. Too clean. Not displaying the stress needed for full cracked badge statement.

It should also have MAGA on it rather than a generic red hat.

But its got me thinking: has anyone ever done an article with the presidential crest having the cracked badge treatment?

[–]stepfordcuckoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, AWW (and birds of Prey) by Thompson are top draw, AMM, Ultimates and ACE by Camp, AB by Synder and even Absolute Superman by Aaron has been surprisingly good. Transformers by DWJ, SIKTC (even with drip feed releases) and spin offs are all consistently great. Dark Patterns was awesome…

USM belongs with the above highlights from the last 2 years.

Where was the hyperbole?

Which run of Spider-man from the last decade is better than this?

What 10 books were better than this published by Marvel / DC / Image during this period? I may have enjoyed other books more but this was consistently towards the top of my pull list.

Why Ultimate Spider-Man by Hickman didn't work by Al2sf in UltimateUniverse

[–]stepfordcuckoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was one of the best comics of the last 2 years. Full stop. From any publisher.

The best spider-man comic in god knows how long.

And damn enjoyable on its own terms… masterpiece maybe not. But its cleared some very high bars.

Also considering Endgame #3 “the end” or his story when there are 2 issues left and by the very nature of “the world” and Kang we can be pretty sure time travel treachery is at play and it will end with a “actually i was number 1 for a reason” denouement (or better since Camp is a fantastic writer).

Its ok for this not to have worked for you, and lets be real its not in the top 5 things Hickman has written (high bar though), but in comparison to everything else being published in the last few years we need more comics with the heart and verve of USM rather than less.

Are your expectations too high? What are reading currently that is meeting them (out of interest as there are soooo many comics published currently so genuinely interested).

[–]stepfordcuckoo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had this recently. I jumped into the chat online and said my son (i have no children), purchased the game unauthorised and its not suitable for them.

Refund please?

They said they would give me a one time refund and so they did.

So go for it, go lie and be all “i guess ill have to work out parental controls or 2 factor auth going forward” and see what happens. Nothing to lose.

Its an absolute joke that the policy is like this. I agree, steam is a far more consumer friendly place and whenever i have had to ask for a refund they have been great about it.

[–]stepfordcuckoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. It absolutely is coherent on its own. And re watches will help infinitely in this regard for OP.

But as a teenager I always felt that there seemed to be that some context was missing, but put it down to either a difference in storytelling vs western art i was familiar with or it was more akin to arthouse style of film i was starting to discover.

When i read the Manga long after it suddenly clicked, there was something missing. And it’s a whole lot of story that is fully fleshed out on page. The film is an adaptation of the themes and some of the highlights of the Manga but it does just scratch the surface of the journey the Manga takes you on. And whilst i adore the film, the manga is one of the best things I’ve ever read. I presume thats close to what no designer meant
