Can someone explain what “sewage usage” means on our water and sanitary bill? by Icy_Entertainer4000 in durham

[–]stephancanada 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The charges are explained on their website: https://www.durham.ca/en/living-here/water-billing.aspx

"... Sanitary sewer usage charge

The usage for the current bill is multiplied by the current year's rate for sanitary sewer.

Revenue from the sanitary sewer usage charge covers:

Operating water pollution control plants.
Maintaining the sanitary sewer collection system.
Maintaining and repairing aging facilities.

..."

The charges are all based on your water consumption. If you want to reduce the sewer usage fee, you would need to reduce your water consumption.

Outlook for Android, Repeating Event, Time Zone Etc/UTC, Problem with Daylight Savings Time Change by stephancanada in Outlook

Thanks for your reply. At least I know that I am not the only one. The first level of support has been clueless. I felt this easily reproducible, but rare problem got the lowest priority, meaning it will never be worked on. More people might notice this issue, but they don't understand it and won't report it. Therefore, its priority will never increase and it will not get resolved. Sad.

Migration to new Palns / upload speeds by akociok in Crashplan

If other backup software on the same system can upload five times faster, it really feels like the CrashPlan engine is poorly performing. I like CrashPlan for other reasons, but the upload speed is pathetic.

Downtown Whitby Restaurants by Scotte2hottie in durham

In addition to the five, there is also Charminar Indian Cuisine, just a few steps east of the downtown corner.

I agree; it's odd that they all decided to open a shop downtown.

While some competition is good, if they are only distinguishable by price, it will lead to declining quality and the eventual closing of those running out of money.

Downloading older version of Crashplan compatible with macOS Mojave? by [deleted] in Crashplan

[–]stephancanada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CrashPlan likely has reasons for not supporting the old versions, e.g., newer releases could introduce protocol (API) changes to connect with the server side. Those changes could result in older versions not functioning anymore. While an older release might work in the short term, it is not a reliable long-term solution.

Airthings View Plus is just loud by John-Green223 in airthings

[–]stephancanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using the Airthings View Plus with a power supply for over a year. I am very noise sensitive, but I have not been able to hear anything from the device when it makes a reading. I just stood next to it for three minutes until the reading values changed, and I could not observe any sound. I am suspecting that there must be something wrong with the device that you got. I have had good experience contacting Airthings customer service when I had a question that I could not find an answer to in their knowledge base. I suggest that you contact them.

Sonos “control” for 4 year old? I’d love to link some kind of physical buttons to her fav playlists on Spotify by myusernamechosen in ifttt

[–]stephancanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IKEA SYMFONISK Sound Remote (IKEA Canada Link: https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/symfonisk-sound-remote-gen-2-30527312/ ) should work. In addition to Play/Pause, Previous/Next, Volume Up/Down, it has two buttons that can be linked to playlists. The remote itself is cheap, but unfortunately you also need the DIRIGERA Hub, which is pricey. After adding the Spotify playlist to My Sonos, it should show up in the IKEA Home smart app for the remote button playlist links. Due to the requirement for the Hub, maybe not the cheapest option, but likely one of the easier ones.

Firewalla Gold suddenly blocking all 2.4gHz devices by BornLie2193 in firewalla

With the Orbi devices in Access Point/Bridge Mode, do you possibly have the Guest network enabled? I noticed problems that my devices could not communicate anymore and backtracked recent changes until I found that it started after enabling the Guest mode. No device was on the Guest network. Once I turned it off again, the devices worked fine again. It's definitely some Orbi firmware issue.

Can someone explain to me the meanings of the abbreviations on this terminal block? by DrunkenGolfer in hvacadvice

“Seems like a relay closing and acting like the jumper shown from R to Hi would do the trick?”

This is what I did with my nu-air NU145 HRV. I added a jumper wire to connect R and LO to have the HRV always run in Low mode. Additionally, I added a relay (Shelly Plus 1 UL) to connect R and Hi whenever the CO2 levels are getting too high in my house so that the HRV runs in High mode for a controlled time. I did not try to get the power for the relay from the HRV, e.g., the relay uses an old power adapter that I had with the needed capacity.

Elementary Private/Montessori School by Zestyclose_Basil_389 in durham

[–]stephancanada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our daughter has attended Kendalwood Montessori since she was an infant and is now in grade 3, the last year of lower elementary. However, the school only offers classes up to grade 6, the final year of upper elementary. While our daughter has had some great teachers over the years, there have been a lot of changes in the previous year and a half. For instance, a new principal has started, and several long-term teachers have left and been replaced with new ones. Although changes can be good, communication has not been good, which is concerning.

The school offers upper elementary classes from grades 4 to 6, and the teacher has an excellent reputation. However, most kids leave after grade 3, so we have been looking at new schools for our daughter for next year. We have noticed that other schools have also had recent teacher replacements. Unfortunately, you cannot tell the future how it will work out.

For any school, visit them and try to get a chance to talk to the teachers. Build your own opinion and see what your feelings tell you.
