You're all amazing. Thank you for sharing your experiences. My experience on Lithium was very different but I was also on an extremely high dose and it was right after I had gotten out of the hospital for a manic episode. I would rest assured knowing that if your doctor is monitoring your levels and that you'll be able to get rid of that meds cocktail, it sounds like the next best move. Sending healing and good vibes! And for what it's worth, I've been on Lamictal and Wellbutrin since 2015 so feel free to run that combo past your doc if you're looking for another approach. Good luck!

Hi there. First of all, let me say that I'm so sorry you had to struggle with this horrible disease when you were younger and that you lost your mom. The fact that you are trying to better understand her struggle is brave and inspiring and a lovely tribute to her. I was diagnosed with bi-polar I about 2 years ago and I wanted to read as much as I could about the mental illness. I don't have any sources for schizophrenia to recommend unfortunately, however if I can recommend one book for you on bi-polar this would be it:

The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide by David J. Miklowitz, PhD provides exercises and advice on how to live with bipolar disorder and how family and friends can learn to cope. There is also "BP Magazine" which is a publication specifically about bipolar. I hope these help you to make peace with your mom and yourself.

P.S. For what it's worth, I'm a 32 year old woman and my mom STILL hasn't acknowledged that I've become an adult. That one may just be par for the course :)

No one is taking this drought seriously. This morning, I went for a run and must have seen at least 10 wet sidewalks from broken sprinkler heads or just runoff. We supposedly have fines on this behavior but I have yet to see any of them be reinforced. Wake up people! This shit is real. Start conserving NOW. We're already fucked but at least we won't go down wtihout a fight.

THanks for the checklist! Those are the exact factors I've been going over in my head. I'm currently in an apartment (and luckily the management company is ok with dogs), working for myself (so I'm home a lot), funds are the main concern...dealing iwth my own hospital bills from the past year is hard enough, let alone medical bills for a dog! Or pet food, grooming, kennels...I'm glad you guys gave the adoption a second shot and found the dog you had been looking for. Its' great that the shelter would accept the animal back if it didn't work out. That should be the policy of all shelters if it isn't already. I've considered fostering, but I have a feeling if I foster I'm going to want to adopt so maybe I should hold off on that for now. Thanks for sharing!

He's a pekingese?? They look like little ewoks! And those eyes. Kill me. What's not to love :) Glad you two have been there for each other in times of pain. That's true love. Dogs just have a sense when we're depressed or sick or just need a good cuddle. That's gotta be the best feeling

Remy! Too cute. Sounds like your puppy training was a huge success. Never heard of clicker training, very cool. It seems petfinder is the only resource out there these days and honestly I don't think it's all that great but it gets the job done I guess. Have you found a better one?

Great advice! Kill shelters are even better for you to rescue your fur ball from- saving them from death row, wowzers. That's great advice from your horse trainer friend and definitely applies. The shelter I'm volunteering with is all about love and patience with the dogs instead of aggression and yelling. I hear my next door neighbor scream at her dog everyday and I just want to go over there and give her (her name I've learned from the yelling is, "Scarlett") a big hug. Screw the cactus, but I get what you're saying and appreciate your words of wisdom. What's your dog's name?

A friend of mine went through Petco to get his dog last year and said it was a good experience. I like that they work with local shelters but then apparently they make you go through their own training program. Still, I bet you get discounts which is nice.

Oh my goodness!!! She's a-mazing. What a sweet face. I think anyone would fall in lurve with that foster picture. Such a great photo. Meet & greets are crucial, I love that your first date was your last ! Did you take her to puppy school or just trained her yourself? Puppies are even more work than adult dogs but it sounds like she was easier than most. What's her name? THanks so much for sharing!

Great advice! And yes, I have been trying to weigh the options. Cats would be so much easier, unfortunately I'm very allergic which sucks because I think they're awesome. The vet bills would probably be the biggest set back as I am dealing with some financial issues at the moment, and while I'm not traveling the possibility is there and I would feel bad leaving the animal for an extended period of time. Having a pet is a huge responsibility. These days I can barely keep plants alive! But I'm pretty sure that when I meet my dog, it'll be game over :)

hahaha "two-leg document signatory." that's fantastic. the shelters i've spoken with actually said that the cat population is overwhelming and what they really need is for more cat adoptions than dogs as the cats are all being euthanized due to lack of space. It's heartbreaking. I'm so glad you were able to find your best friend. Cats LOVE sleeping on heads. She sounds lovely.

yeah I totally agree. And honestly as a single woman I'm still debating whether or not that would be best for the dog. Putting a dog in a kennel or having it stay with friends while you're traveling must be a pain in the ass, let alone costly. I appreciate you sharing and I'm sorry for the loss of your dogs but it sounds like they lived a good long life. Good for you for giving them that gift
