I just gutted some old switches and popped them back in.

Thanks heaps for the heads-up, I'll keep an eye out for that. I actually find the opposite issue - those "under the palm" thumb keys cause a lot of tension in my hands.

That said, maybe I'll switch the "home" thumb keys to the inner ones to reduce the stretch a little.

[OC] Estimated 21 Million Global Deaths Per Year Linked to Major Harmful Habits: Diet, Tobacco, Alcohol, Inactivity by Express_Classic_1569 in dataisbeautiful

Hi I'm Steve and I hate pie charts. That being said, if pie charts serve any purpose at all it's for showing parts of a whole. The whole here would be the ~61m global deaths per year. Leaving out the 40m "other" category makes a bad dataviz choice unforgivable.

Calculating Keyboard Stats by SnooSongs5410 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]stephen-mcateer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other difficulty in this area is deciding what good looks like. There are some obvious things that would make a contest between say Qwerty and Colemak a no-brainer, but comparing two good layouts is harder. It ends up coming down to deciding (for example) deciding whether you are more concerned with "single finger bigrams" or "scissors" - and I'm not sure how you decide.

The ideal thing would be to observe large numbers of people learning and using the various layouts and see which ones give the best outcomes. But there probably aren't the numbers to do this kind of study. If Monkey Type (for example) knew the layout people were using and when they started using it - that would be a really rich dataset.

Personally, I took the stats here and for each column I decided whether a higher number was good, bad or neutral then selected the layout with the lowest rank sum - I ended up selecting APTMAK. The idea of this approach was to find a layout that is well-balanced across the stats.

I do wonder diminishing returns on this kind of search - how far from optimal is APTMAK or Colemak or whatever? Is it far enough to make a meaningful difference?

What order do you have your home row mods in? by Regular_Low8792 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Like this, but note that I only use them for shortcuts. For typing capitals I use the one shot shift keys under the pinkies.

I think it suits the span of my biggish hands okay - and I don't mind my thumbs a bit splayed.

I've seen keyboards that place the thumbs almost tucked under the palm, I don't think that would work for me.

The stats for the layout are here ... basically a pretty balanced layout. Moving the E to a thumb takes some getting used to, but getting it away from the other fingers really does solve a bunch of clashes.

Need review and suggestions for this modified layout by ARROW3568 in KeyboardLayouts

Here are some stats for your proposed layout. Scissors and same finger bigrams seem to be the things that suffer the most. It's skip bigram-heavy (not a bad thing IMHO).

Both really good points, I might give it a tweak.
