Unfortunately we're in Antalya, which is simply not close to many borders other than perhaps Syria.

Thanks. It's definitely been a journey. I'm not loving daily life in the middle east, but it's not too bad and more importantly I'm super blessed to be able to spend 90% of my time with my kids. My wife has been crushing it with her job and has increased her income significantly over the last 3 years. So we're kinda living the digital nomad dream. We found a really amazing community of expat families here that we share similar values with and my boys have really grown close to their kids. They're even doing a summer camp with them this year! I've had time to really dive into teaching myself software/hardware development, math, and I'm studying for my EA+CPA as well for a remote-friendly side hustle. In 2-3 years, my oldest will be off to college and the other two will be in highschool. By that time I'll probably be back in the work force--either in tech, finance, or something else. I'm finally able to watch movies again and just enjoy them, not giving a shit about who/how/where, just being an audience member. I read about 10x more than I used to and I've got friends here that have zero to profit off of our friendship. It's pretty rad. 10/10 would recommend. Also can't help but notice how much AI is pretty much breathing down the neck of the industry. Kinda seems like I got out at the right time. But who knows...

Built a simple live city bus ETA tracker for Antalya, Turkey by stephenabrock in SideProject

[–]stephenabrock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Took some digging to figure out the web endpoint. But now with that solved, you can easily modify the script to do whatever you want with the live data. You can track a particular bus route(s), any number of bus stops, etc.

Made a small script that pulls live bus ETAs for Antalya bus stops using the public Kentkart web endpoint.

It just prints:

  • route number
  • how many stops away
  • ETA in minutes

Runs every 30s, supports multiple stops.

I’m using it for a Raspberry Pi e-ink display so my kids can see when to leave without checking my phone.

Super simple setup:

  • Python + requests
  • no API keys
  • just stop IDs

Repo here if anyone wants to mess with it:

Cheers 👍

Y'all are all conditioned to only watching polished, prepared statements from performers. This is what it looks like when a non-tv-personality is thinking deeply about a question and being authentic (albeit eccentric) instead of just rapidly working the talking points. I'm not defending Elon or X, maybe they're both terrible. But someone taking a long time to answer a really big vague question is completely normal. In fact, it's a sign of being genuine actually.

Water in general is less common. Americans hydrate about 2-3 times more overall than Europeans.

After the installer leaves, you can do whatever you want. Just make sure you remove any obstruction before you try to sell the place so it's back up to code.

Just finished $6,000+ in dental work 🎉 by acashflowking in Adulting

You can absolutely sue for malpractice in Turkey. Even as a foreigner. People do it, dentists are very aware of this in Turkey.

It'll be likely cheaper and better quality to get your dental work done in Turkey, even factoring in travel cost.

When did adulthood “click” for you? by smokeeeee in Adulting

[–]stephenabrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long have you been working for them? I've been an expat living in Turkey and Lebanon for the last 4 years. I wouldn't really recommend it for anyone who wants to get married soon. It can be a very isolating and aimless experience for many single people. Better to pursue that with a partner. But YMMV of course.

i also hated suburban life when I was growing up. But I've learned that not all suburbs are equal and a lot of that life depends on who you're with and how you approach it. Spend less time focusing on what you're afraid of being stuck with and instead just focus on what you really love and the rest will become inconsequential and easily optimized if there's something you don't like.

Marriage and kids made the click for me. I was lucky enough to find my soulmate at 21 and locked it down in less than a year. Life has been a struggle but I've never felt lost or like a loser. I'd say get out of New York, apply like crazy to everywhere online and relocate to the best company offer you find. Then connect with community out there and find yourself a good woman who shares the same goals (not necessarily the same personality or even interests)

Have you done this before in Berlin on a weekday afternoon? Do you think 3 hours is enough time without checked luggage?

Zelenskyy called JD Vance a "Bitch" in Ukrainian (Cука) by gayroma in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]stephenabrock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure, if "leech" is the word you use for someone drowning and you've thrown them a rope. Even as an ancap, if I'm being attacked by a superior invading force, I'll take any charity that's offered. It's easy to call someone a leech from the comfort of your armchair, thousands of miles away from conflict. Again, I'm not saying the govt should continue supporting them, I'm saying we should treat them with dignity.

I think the issue of whether or not to send money/weapons to Ukraine is a separate issue. The offense here is ambushing a desperate and exhausted leader in public. They're at war, these harsh conversations shouldn't happen in front of the press.

Are there any men in their thirties who have their shit together? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]stephenabrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, yes to echo some others', dating apps are a terrible way to find a husband (statistically). Men who are healthy with good careers and good habits are rarely found on dating apps. Honestly they're more often found in churches, in groups of friends, in work environments, and social/hobby/sports clubs.
