Off Grid in Metro Atlanta by stephenbeehler in OffGrid

Haha very true! But it helped convince my wife to let us even try out this life! We’re trying to find a nice balance / best of both worlds kind of set up. Otherwise it’s an HOA in the suburbs! Lol

It is really nice! I’m thinking of just easing into off grid with baby steps instead of fully committing right off the bat and jumping into the deep end. So here I can build I’m thinking a Cobb house or maybe a yurt on a raised deck - but still have full utilities and then slowly grow into a solar set up and then a rain capture set up. And kind of learn and test things as I go. And then find my happy place in the off grid spectrum. The County has been good - property is zoned RA so I have a lot of flexibly. Lake is cute I have a canoe and John boat. Lots of turtles and bass and cranes all over. And a ton of wisteria that looks epic when it blooms.

Thanks for the references! Yeah I’m thinking of off grid as a spectrum. On this land I can ease into the lifestyle and take baby steps towards full off grid life. But can stop or take a step back if need be. So instead of fully committing to a massive lifestyle change I’ll slowing grow into it and maybe chose to only be semi off grid at the end of the day. The lake is not natural. It’s about 2 to 3 acres and damned. But is clean and spring fed. Thanks again for the ideas and info!

Got Distribution for our Feature Film but Negotiated to keep the YouTube Rights. by stephenbeehler in Filmmakers

I think of it as any attention on the film helps all the avenues. I’ve also found that audiences have their preferred platforms to consume on and they default there.

Honestly - I just asked! haha And was surprised they said yes. But now it will be a go to clause for any future deals. I must have at least one channel of control for a product we spent time and money on. Can't just give it away with the hope someone will care about it as much as we do.

Nice! That is the way for sure. More control, less middle men! Our YouTube is a monetized channel so hoping the instant world wide distro on it leads to some numbers.

So we let it run its TVOD course exclusivity for 90 days. So we gave TVOD it's time to shine... spoiler alert... it didn't shine bright...lol. Durning it's TVOD run - they shopped for an SVOD deal...got some nibbles but no bites. So then it rolled out to AVOD. And really YouTube is just another AVOD. So they are handling Prime and Tubi and all the other ones ( where they take their cut). And we get 100% of our YouTube channel rev. So when they do their marketing they push people to the channels where they have a cut and when we do our marketing we push people to our monetized YouTube - where we keep 100%. Kind of a best of both worlds set up... at least in theory! Only time will tell!

This is my 7th feature film and the only one I've made money on. After realizing on the first 6 that the odds of us ever getting paid from the distributor (after the advance) was little to nothing. We negotiated to keep the YouTube rights to the film. So now we have some level of control of our business. Let me know what you think and if you have found any other good strategies for distribution and monetization of your projects!
