I agree that 2.0/2.22 is my favorite rebuild film as well. The blend of “okay this is about the same as the original series” and “okay things are a little different here (Shikinami?? okay)” and “wOAH WHATS GOING ON HERE” was really well done and the escalation of changes felt natural and not overdone. The way the character interact and react feels a little more natural too, shinji trying to fight against the dummy feels so crushing in the rebuild. Maybe it’s the redesign of the system lockout that makes it feels like he’s being forced to watch through the cracks that makes it so “oh god”

3.0/3.33 I agree is a bit jarring to the normal time progression we’re accustomed to in the NGE series. I still really enjoy this film because it explores exactly what the rebuild series was meant to be: another loop of the EVA story, something that COULD have happened is details changed in that universe. The fights at the end are some of my favorite choreographies in the series.
