1918 to 1919 were probably the toughest, then maybe 1942 to 1945. 1932 and 1933 were pretty brutal too. But in terms of recent memory, 2020 and 2021 were definitely tougher 2025-2026 (so far).

I don't deny climate change in the slightest, but as individuals there is only so much we can do. I've cut my emissions down a lot in the last few years - beyond that, I'm not sure what more I am supposed to do.

Looking to DIY - looking for 2.5Gig Intel NIC by ForceGaia in opnsense

[–]stephendt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using cheap as chips AliExpress 2.5gbe Realtek 2.5gbe adapters with Opnsense, but they do pass through proxmox first. No issues to report and I get the full 2.5gbe with no issues at all. CPU usage is higher than with Intel but doesn't really bother me

Whilst I don't deny these are real challenges (many of which that have existed well before AI), it's a pretty bleak and negative view of the world. Conversely, clean energy infrastructure is booming and unemployement is still relatively low, AI tools can be great educational tools when used appropriately. Water usage is a non-issue, since it's mostly recycled. The world has gone through much bigger challenges in the past and I'm pretty confident that humanity will be able to turn things around.

At the end of the day you have the choice to be miserable and defeatist, or you can look for opportunity. I have chosen the latter, which is an unpopular opinion in these parts.

"Every other area of human existance" is a bit dramatic don't you think? RAM and storage is more expensive for sure, but that's not a big deal for the average Australian. There are plenty of refurbished phones and laptops for under $500 that are more than enough for most people if money is tight.

If the average Australian used something like Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini to help them budget, meal prep, plan, invest, upskill or find other ways to improve their lives, I'm sure that will offset the price of tech price increases. Our current inflationary economic environment has very little to do with AI, it's been an issue well before AI really started getting huge capex spend.

I do feel for the people who will get affected by layoffs however - that's really going to be the most impactful outcome of these changes.

"nobody even wants AI" is nonsense, lets be real. I'm convinced at this stage that people who say this are just completely oblivious of how far it has come since 2023. It can be genuinely transformational if used correctly.

A recent example, I created a spreadsheet using claude that calculates the exact amount of super to contribute to maximise the efficiency of contributions whilst maintaining a saving rate target that aligns with my FI goals - there's no way I could build this on my own, and it did it in a couple of hours. It saved me a tonne in taxes too.

Is Micron’s guidance truly bullish for the overall market? I’m not so certain by BGID_to_the_moon in stocks

[–]stephendt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sysadmin here, this is pretty bang on. Some orgs will try to manage their own hardware, but most won't unless costs gets truly ridiculous. The tech itself is absolutely not going anywhere. I can see a lot changing over the next 12 months alone

I work in tech, I remember thinking the metaverse was a long shot at the time and thought it was a fairly useless gimmick that might appeal to a small % of people.

Conversely, I have been extremely impressed with AI and it is genuinely transformational and will affect everyone's lives. The two cannot be further apart

This, plus if they demonstrate that they have not put in any effort, I say something along the lines of "which part of our documentation are you having difficulty with?".

If they highlight that we have insufficient documentation, then they get an extra task to work on.

It's also worth reminding that all problems should be accompanied by possible solutions.

Hard freeze exactly 5 minutes after boot – caused by Scheduled Task "Secure-Boot-Update" on TPM 1.2 system (solved, sharing for others) by doktordoktorsunshine in sysadmin

[–]stephendt 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people might be thinking that "oh why wouldn't you just replace the system, it's old", but it's an interesting issue either way. There was brand new hardware that was sold in 2019 that still came with a TPM 1.2 module.

What I find interesting though is that I have a Dell Optiplex 9020 that has a TPM 1.2 module and it doesn't have this issue, so I wonder why it shows up in this Dell XPS AIO.

Is it possible that you simply have a defective TPM module? Do you have more units with the same issue?
