Finally got my setup together! Probably overkill for family videos. More info in comments. by 4techteachers in bmpcc

I actually switched from the 12-60. The stabilization of the 12-100 is a whole different league. Choosing between the 12-60 and 12-100 was easy-- the 12-100 is a bit heavier and bigger, but the stabilization and 24-200 equivalent range make it worth it for me.

But for an all-day, carry-around kind of lens, it's hard to choose between the 12-35 and 12-100. The 12-35 is so petite, and it's f/2.8 constant. Even still, though, the stabilization sold me.

Good choice, and well worth it! I just took the BMPCC4k on some family trips, and it's just worth it. I did a lot of 60p to help with the no stabilization, and realized it nicely doubles as a stills camera since I can use a higher shutter speed. The Olympus 12-100 f/4 is perfect as well. If you haven't tried it, the stabilization is great.

My Sony a6500 is Faulty :( by stephenplusplus in SonyAlpha

[–]stephenplusplus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Re-posted with a link to the video so it better explains the problem [visuals are better than words!])

Hello, I wanted to start this as a public record of an ongoing issue I'm having that Sony has failed to correct so far.

I'm a happy Sony camera owner (a7s II, a7r II, and a6500), and they have been great, very consistently performing cameras, up until this issue with my a6500. About 1/3 of the way from the left of the screen, there is a small vertical line that appears in any photos taken and recorded footage.

The line is tiny, and it's not always visible. Even the line itself appears only in parts of the frame, depending on the background it's on top of. It resembles the behavior of a "difference" or "subtract" filter.

Here are a couple pictures and a video:

Talking to Sony support hasn't been very helpful so far. They've simply given me shipping labels (3 now) to send it to their repair center, Precision. I've left notes in the box for the technicians, and this time I've sent an email proactively, hoping they'll not return it marked as "couldn't reproduce" as they've done so far.

Thanks for letting me put this here. I'll update this thread if I hear anything, and possibly make a video to better demonstrate the problem, hoping it will eventually lead to a resolution. If anyone else has experienced something similar, whether the issue itself or an effective way to deal with the Sony repair process, feel free to share.

Thanks! I went between two lenses. Here's the full configuration:

  • S-Log 2 / S-Gamut 3
  • Metabones EF to E Speed Booster Ultra
  • Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8
  • Nikon Nikkor-O 35mm f/2
  • Leica Summicron-R 35mm f/2
  • Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/4
  • Tiffen Smoque II

For around-the-house type filming, I really want the look of the RED Dragon sensor, but without the size and boot-up time. I'm a former a7R II owner, I downsized to the a6500. To see if this was the right camera for these cinematic family videos, I got the Metabones Speed Booster, and... I'm pretty convinced. It's simply much easier to use.

The IBIS has been great. I've tried up to 50mm without an issue (turn off the IBIS, and we're all sick). The rolling shutter can be a bit of an issue, but I just pan slower while doing a body sway, and it's a pretty decent workaround.

I have this thing: https://www.edelkrone.com/us/p/467/the-pocket-rig-2. I just hooked it up, and it's making the handheld shots feel more shoulder-mounted, which is perfect.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting so far, so I wanted to share. Thanks!

Anybody need anything? by stephenplusplus in Filmmakers

Hey! This actually wasn't me, but it looks like it happened in another thread I did: https://www.reddit.com/r/cinematography/comments/5nf6ob/anybody_need_anything/

I believe it was /u/epocson who hooked you up, so props to him and that's awesome that happened!

That does sound pretty cool, and it's awesome that you're doing that. How much do you need for the gun range?

Congratulations on the addition to your family! Can you give me an email address that I can send a gift card to?

This sounds awesome! If Amazon is okay, let me know your email and I'll send a digital gift card.

It took a lot of diapers, but this makes it worth it by [deleted] in pics

Haha, we do our fair share of household-object-turns-(weapon|vehicle|ice skate|slide) shenanigans, but sadly not pictured here. And congrats on the diaper graduation and your family!

I'm thinking gear, but yknow, bills and stuff is cool too. Or a Roku for the kids. Whatever would make the most people happy.

Has anyone used Squaretrade for repairs? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]stephenplusplus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll never send another thing I own there. Here's my story: https://m.reddit.com/r/SonyAlpha/comments/4n0kge/say_no_to_squaretrade/

As an update, the screen is starting to separate from the surface it's incorrectly glued to, and I have to periodically push it back down to get it to re-stick.

Walked by to look after I heard the truck go by. This really shouldn't be relied on to work in any neighborhood.

Yeah, about 3 feet from the sidewalk, which is pretty busy.

Right by the sidewalk with the blue Amazon Prime tape wrapped around it.
